I have to indulge myself with a moment's boasting. I swam 100m last night without stopping. And I've only been to three swimming training sessions since I restarted my training.

I am so thrilled with this!!!!! (can you tell??)

To put this in context (because I know it pales next to Greg's monster swim ) when I started triathlon training (pre-baby), I couldn't swim 25m front crawl and it took me a long time to build up to 100m. In my one triathlon, I ended up swimming with my head out of the water because the waves were freaking me out Embarassed. When I re-started swimming, I was pleased that I could manage 25m and even 50m without drowning, but kind-of assumed it would take me longer to get to 100m.

My next goal is to crack 200m - and then 400m, which is a big goal because it's the distance for my first sprint triathlon next year. The ultimate goal is 750m because that's the distance for the Windsor Sprint in June (my A race).

Gilly that is AWESOME about your swim! Back when I started swimming somewhat seriously (just this past May) I also struggled to go 50 yards nonstop, but after months of working at it I can now easily swim 1500 nonstop (probably more, but I get really bored and lose count after that!). As long as you keep at it, you will reach all your next distance goals easily!

Congratulations Gill! Brag away! No matter what milestone you make, you know we're here to cheer you on

I went to our new fitness center last night. I lasted 3 minutes on the elliptical. It was killing my knees, since I wasn't used to picking them up that high. I had it on the weinie setting! LOL I hit the treadmill for 20 minutes at a low pace to keep my HR down, and then I hit the pool when DH showed up. I did a slow freestyle WU of 50 meters, then pull buoys for 100 meters, then WD freestyle of 50 meters. I plan on doing this routine every night this week, except I'm hoping to increase my stay on the elliptical by a minute each night. I also get my free fitness assessment tonight

Nice job!!

200 will be VERY easy to crack. There is an 'exponential' learning curve to swimming, and the distances get easier and easier.

That is awesome! Swimming is really hard, well for me it is! when I started training for my first real triathlon early this summer, I hadn't swam in years (and had hardly ever swam before that!). I considered myself in really good shape but I still couldn't swim the length of a full sized pool without running out of breath and having to pull my head out and regroup. I trained my swimming a ton in the month before the tri and I got much better (still pretty bad at it though!)

Andrew, I'm amazed at that!!!Your swim logs are seriously IMPRESSSIVE reading--between the two men on our team and a few serious swimmers here I could get some stinking HARD AZZ swim work outs! I agree, swimming is hard but it has to do a lot with learning the timing to breathe and keeping the technique focused.  Each of the disciplines has its own challenge but the swim seems to be a consistent "fear" in a lot of peoples minds.  I know many docs who have confided in me that they're afraid to get their faces in the water and therefore do not swim...Cracks me up for some reason Probably because I see them in codes and such so calm and collected  and then they panic in water...

Ummm, I think you are confusing me with someone else, I haven't actually gotten in the water at all this month, and if I had I can assure you it would not be impressive! I am, by almost anyone's standards, a terrible swimmer. Once my pool opens and I can start practicing again that is going to be main focus all the way until May and hopefully by then I will be at least respectable.

Honestly I actually kind of like that I am so terrible at swimming though, I enjoy the challenge of making myself significantly better, and when I do get better it's going to be a sweet victory for me! I have the potential to cut my swim times in half, I certainly can't say that about my run or bike.

I sure hope so!!! I don't think I will ever be a great swimmer though, no matter how much I practice, my body is just not well designed for swimming. I just need to get good enough to hang with the pack though, if I can do that I think my legs will take care of me for the rest of the race.

The November Challenge is almost over!

This month's Challenge is almost over. How times flies when we're having fun!

Please update your Google Spreadsheets with your final totals by "bedtime" on Saturday. This will give everyone a chance to get their last workouts in on Friday November 30th, and enter their totals the following day.

You do NOT need to calculate percentages. I will do that. (Yes, you can do it if you want to....)

On Sunday morning, I will download the spreadsheets and start summing up the data.

IF YOUR INFORMATION ISN"T ENTERED BY THE TIME I DOWNLOAD THE SPREADSHEETS, I WILL ASSUME THAT YOU HAVE NOT MET YOUR GOALS!

Team Captains - Please check your team threads on Saturday. If anyone has trouble using the Google Spreadsheets, please help them to enter their data.

Run! Swim! Bike! Get those last minute workouts in! There's still time!!!

Saturday is December 1st. It's also the first day of the SWIM CHALLENGE! If you haven't already done so, don't forget to sign up for the fun!

OK.  I'm within 2,000m of my 25,000m challenge.  I'll complete 2,000m tomorrow, if all goes as planned.

Someone repost the google spreadsheet.  I'm having a hard time finding it in the 17 pages of this thread!!!

well I'm tired tonight, got clobbered again at work so my lst pilates video will happen tomorrow after I get my eyes checked--did you know that I was using the same disposable lens in one eye for over 2 months cause I ran out of lenses?  Something about one lens ALWAYS popping out on the swim. I bought prescription goggles a while back but they leak terrible and still dig into my face-I don't find these things worth the bucks spent on them!

So my swim today put me above my initial goal of 60km... but I had to be ambitious and shoot for 72km. I will end up at about 66.5km (which was one workout away from my goal).

But yeah... 5.9km swim today!!! I feel so much more in shape! Maybe I will break 6 on saturday (or at least the next time we do a short course workout).

I hit my bike goal pretty close, made it a little over thanks to bringing my bike with me on vacation. I think I set my run goal too low though as I completely crushed that one. My focus right now is really about the bike anyway though so I didn't really want a really high goal pushing me for miles on foot so I guess that was a good thing. This was a fun month for training though, a good first experience for me with the monthly challenge thing. Thanks everyone! Now I need to go find a place to swim for December so I can do the swim challenge.

My Pilates/balance ball video is met, pushups are met.  The only one I have to complete is holding a plank for 75 seconds...haven't been able to get past 1 minute yet but that's pat of this afternoons goal.  It has been a great challenge, low stress and lots of fun meeting a few new people on the boards.

Well I made 95% of my running goal which I'm really pleased about! (I would have made 100% if I hadn't slept through my alarm yesterday Embarassed).

As for my bike goal, not so good. My excuses are that the weather has been appalling and my weekends have been really crazy-busy.

But I did achieve a goal that I hadn't planned on meeting, which was to start swimming again, so I'm totally thrilled with my progress for November.

Couldn't have done it without this fabulous group!

Congrats to everyone for the progress they've made and thanks for all the support and encouragement.

Terri,

That's the hard part of setting up a challenge at any part of this...enough to challenge myself to grow but not so much I can't possibly get there from here.  I'm a bit nervous about my swim goals next month, my coach didn't want to set a yardage goal initially but I told him what we did in the past 2 months and he went just over the Oct. distances.  I think everyone should be proud of what has been accomplished and just analyze what didn't get done enough to figure out if the goal was set too high or if outside factors such as illness/injury prevented the goal from being met.  Some of those outside factors simply can't be changed and some of them take a creative approach to deal with

I hear ya! I just set my goals too high! LOL

As to the swimming, I just set my swim goals for December to match what the training plan is for me in December. It's the first month I'll be actually doing a triathlon training plan and I intend to follow it and not deviate so I can see how it feels to multi-train. I keep looking at it and wondering if I'm out of my mind. I can only imagine how tired I'm going to be and am wondering how this is going to affect my hunger levels, since I'm trying to lose weight too.

Hey Corps! I'm home from Mexico!

Overall, I had a GREAT time on the cruise, but some of the local food & beverage in Mazatlan got the better of me and I spent all night/day Thursday and Friday deathly sick. As a result, I missed out on my last planned swim and strength training sessions.

I was totally bummed about missing the swim time, because it was actually going to be snorkeling and swimming at a private cove/beach at Las Caletas in Puerta Vallarta. Thankfully, my travel companion took a lot of cool pictures, so I lived vicariously though him.

So, at the end of the challenge, I met my running and weight loss goals, but missed my swimming and strength training goals by 1 session due to illness. How did everyone else do?
