I just was wondering what people are finding works for them when it comes to Pre-reace.. in race... and post race nutrition/recovery I know it can be different from one person to the next, but I thought it would be good to hear what people like Something you'll probably find in common in responses is that pre-race food is plain, mostly carb-y, maybe with a little protein. Post-race nutrition (immediately post-race) should have a protein:carb ratio of 1:3 to 1:4, and the carb should be easily digestible (e.g., sugary!) Once you have a proper meal, have whatever you want, unless you're always watching what you eat, in which case it should be a regular, nutritious, well-balanced meal. So! Ideally, this is what I eat before races (and before long training sessions): toast or English muffin with PB (maybe some jelly too), coffee with milk and real sugar. Post-race, whatever is being offered, but as it's usually all carby, I try to make sure I get some protein in with it--a Powerbar has a good balance of protein:carbs. |

Master 3479![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Utah | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's New Manatees - FULL! :-)OK, I have a question. how do you balance training for, say, a half marathon with trying to build base back up in the other disciplines? I took some time off last fall/early winter, and found I basically put myself back to square one with my fitness level. The bike is my limiter, so I found a great plan, bought a great trainer, and had a plan set to get me through until March, when I figured I would step up the training in the other 2 disciplines, and stay with sprint distance tri again this year. Fine and dandy until I had a hard time getting the trainer sessions in, for too many lame reasons. Then throw in the third year that the girls at work have thrown around the idea of doing a half marathon together. This is the first year anyone has actually registered. I am really excited for the half mary, but I am finding that I am only able to get 3 sometimes 4 days of training in. And the running plan calls for 4 days starting the second week of February. I haven't been in a pool for over a month, and I am having a really hard time even getting on the bike. The feeling is like restless legs combined with an anxiety attack. I don't know how else to describe it. I have dropped the bike plan I was doing, but I am really worried--how do I get the increase in bike fitness I need, without sacrificing the run, or leaving the swim, well, dry? |

It can be hard to fit things in, and you have a lot on your plate anyway. Part of the restless legs/anxiety could be feeling like you HAVE to get on the trainer or you HAVE to catch up. You are where you're at and it's fine to take it easy and build from there. And don't feel like you HAVE to be on the trainer for X amount of time. You'd be amazed at what 15 minutes here, 15 minutes there can do. It looks like your options are either to pick a different half-mary plan that allows for cross-training (for example, Jeff Galloway's half-mary training does that), or to build in two-a-days. Use the bike and swim to "recover" from your runs. Those are some thoughts, and maybe others might have some, too. |

I don't know how else to describe it. I have dropped the bike plan I was doing, but I am really worried--how do I get the increase in bike fitness I need, without sacrificing the run, or leaving the swim, well, dry? Yep, this is a tough one -- for all of us, I think (especially us beginners). Now that I'm run-focused, I find it really, really difficult to get in proper bike and swim training. For me, I finally had to decide that I was just going to sacrifice my bike and swim fitness for running, because that's what I enjoy. I do just enough swim/bike to be able to do sprint tris a few times a year, but I'm hardly building a base. That's a long way of saying you're always going to have to make hard choices in tri training, I think, especially if you want to throw in a half marathon too! It seems like it's going to be impractical for you to fit in an intense bike program on top of the half mary training for now. The secret is: That's OK! You have to give yourself permission to back off. I think that's the most important thing, to ease up on yourself. I know when I put too much pressure on myself to train (or, frankly, with anything in life), it makes me miserable and even *less* likely to do what I think I'm supposed to do. I think Yanti's absolutely right and one of the best things to do is squeeze in whatever training time you can get. That could mean 15 minutes on the trainer every other day, or 20 minutes in the pool once a week, or finding a half mary training plan that's only three days of running plus cross training. If you're having trouble making time for four training days a week, maybe set a goal for yoursef: Four pink squares in your logs every week. It doesn't matter *how* you get those pink squares -- a 15-minute run totally counts! -- just make sure you get them somehow. Once you can do that for a couple weeks, you might be surprised at how you're able to make the time, and then you can build from there. |

I don't know how else to describe it. I have dropped the bike plan I was doing, but I am really worried--how do I get the increase in bike fitness I need, without sacrificing the run, or leaving the swim, well, dry? My approach to this would be to take two independent plans: One which is running focused (which also calls for cross training) and one which is a triathlon base building focused and lay them one on top of the other in such a way that the runs will take place on the same days. Then, create a single plan which takes the runs from the first plan and the rest of the workouts from the second plan. It is not always easy to do and you may have to do some adjustments, but it is doable. I would keep a single rest day a week too. Finally, I would check if the outcome is a plan which I can truly follow and fit into my schedule. If chances are that I will have to skip quite a bit of the workouts - I will try to come up with a different plan. I think that the most critical aspect of a training plan, is not the plan itself, but rather the execution of it. Yet, another alternative is to consult with a professional endurance trainer/coach. Provided with your goals (short and long terms), schedule and current fitness level, a good coach can tailor a custom plan just for you. Just my thoughts...

What does everyone have on tap this weekend...and How did everyones training go for Jan.? I know we had some very BIG First Time racesfor some Manatees but how did the overall training go? I was in the Peach Challenge for getting Peach Squares for all days on your training calendar for the month. First time I have done 31 straight days of SOMETHING training related since I started Tri training in Sept. 07. (And it was frickin hard some days) I am starting on my new PLAN for my Olympic in May. 1.5-2.0 hr. bike/Intervals training in the pool/ 45-60 min. easy run. I have work day at the H.S. where I coach baseball tomorrow and my youngest is pitching Sunday at 12:00 at the college he goes to....this is going to be one of those scheduling nightmare. What's everyone else up to?

Expert 973![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Berkeley, Calif. | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's New Manatees - FULL! :-)I don't have any big training plans for the weekend -- I did my "long" run today (only five miles, but it's the longest I've gone since my marathon), since I had the day off, instead of tomorrow as planned. So tomorrow I may do a short run, or I might put it off until Sunday (after a Super Bowl party -- running with a belly full of digusting foods = awesome). January was OK for me. It started off very bad with the knee problem and almost no running, but it's definitely improved now and I'm slowly working back up to some decent weekly mileage. I'll probably do about 20 miles by the end of this week, and maybe 25 next week, if the knee continues to hold up. Because of my issues I don't really have a plan right now. I'm giving myself another few weeks of free-form training before I figure out what kind of marathon plan to tackle. I've signed up for the February Peach challenge. Anyone else in? |

Glad you had such a great trip. The King is special to me, too ... me and a bunch of people broke the world record for most running Elvises (Elvi?) in a marathon at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego last year (see below). Definitely ease back into training. There are different methods/plans for getting back into it, but all of them suggest easing back. My iron training plan recommends 1/3 the first two days back, 2/3 the next two days, and full back on the fifth. That seems pretty sound to me. If you scale way back on intensity (do everything easy) you could also do something like 1/2 for a couple days, 2/3 for a couple days, etc. ... but definitely take 4-5 days to gradually get back into it.
