Master 1841 Sendai, Japan | Subject: RE: Fighting Okra - September End of Summer Challenge skrtrnr - 2009-09-23 9:13 PM . DAN. the way your going about it, super duper smart. i had 12 mos of consistent running (4xs a week) before i added any sort of speedwork into my regime. and then when i did, i added those types of workouts in VERY gradually. GRADUAL being the KEY word....ive seen it time and time again, people doing too much, too soon, running too fast. inevitably they get injured. i might not have made the same 'progress' that some of my 'swifitier' friends made in the beginning, BUT im still running persistently and consistently. incremental progress may be slow, but its STILL PROGRESS. even now, after three years, im still using an intermediate running plan that only includes tempos and intervals ie no hill workouts and mile repeats that the advance plan includes.... next year we'll move up to one of those youre one SMART runner! stacieb Thanks Stacie. I will definitely bring the speedwork in gradually. I tried some of this stuff (tempo, hills) back in 2001 when I was training for my one and only marathon. I quickly bailed out because I did not have the base to support it and I was struggling to stick to the plan as it was. After over 7 years of knee problems every time I tried to get back into running, I know that I can't rush into these things. p.s. for Kim/Stacie: I too am surrounded by hills and long slow inclines are necessarily a part of my runs, but I'm trying to shorten up my stride a lot on any uphills and open it up a little on the downhills with an eye towards keeping my breathing relatively consistent. "Hill workouts" typically involve multiple repeats of going fast on the uphill and recovering on the downhill. I think I only tried this a couple times in 2001 and am sure they contributed to being diagnosed with chronic fatigue about half way into my training plan. After typing the last couple sentences, I realize that hill workouts are aways away. Edited by dcon 2009-09-24 8:02 AM |

Elite 3913 far northern CA | Subject: RE: Fighting Okra - September End of Summer Challenge May or may not get a workout done today. I was going to swim, but my husband and I just can't meet up today. I can't go to the usual pool (with childcare) since it's closed for 2 weeks. I may try to get a short treadmill run done this evening. |

Champion 6225 | Subject: RE: Fighting Okra - September End of Summer Challenge anyone ever have to ride past armored military vehicles and armed military personnel to pick up a race packet? strangest experience EVER. but thankfully the protests were taking place on the other side of the river from the EXPO, so i didnt get tangled up in blocked streets. all in all though the city is very, very quiet. from a talk show host who was in the city yesturday, the protests have been calm and civil. apparently the group of 'anarchists' causing all the 'mayhem' are a small small percentage of the total # of protesters, course theyre the ones that make the evening news. 12 out of 13 protests that went on yesturday, were completely peaceful. im all for people expressing their opinion, but please, dont harm us or our neighborhoods. it dilutes the message your trying to convey. it really does. alrighty then. time to end the PSA. im off in a few to COOK FOREST STATE PARK. gonna enjoy a splendid ride w my honey and some good friends tomorrow, then meeting up w friends on Sunday to run what i hope will be a swifty 10K. im sure the anarchists will be on a BUS heading to parts unknown by then.
