kimk - 2010-04-04 7:41 AM ... I so wish I could remember laps! ...

Not sure if thiswill help, but I count by hundreds in the pool... 1,2,3, 100, 1,2,3, 200, 1,2,3, 300....  If I'm swimming a really big set, I will finish every 100 with site breathing to help me keep the numbers straight.  Just thought I would share.  Works for me.

I've tried just about everything! I will start counting then wonder is the lap I'm on 100 or did I just finish 100, or is it the next lap...then I realize I have flipped and the whole process starts over! I have tried a lap counter and forget to push the button. I have tried things on the deck but I don't like to stop to move it over. I think I am hopeless when it comes to counting! That is why I got the nike ipod for my running even when I was doing laps on the track I would loose count!

Have you tried just going by time?  If you're pretty consistent and know your average lap time, you can just calculate how long it would take you to swim the distance you need and go from there.  I've done this before when I left my watch at home and just used the clock on the wall. Your training log can tell you your average per 100 and then you can multiply that (by 10 for 1000 or 20 for 2000) to get your total time for your distance.

This is what I do now....but like today trying to time my 500 to see if I got any better and I miss counted by al least 100!(seeing that I was over 2 min slower but I was cruzen!)

masters class was good tonight.  I got what I hoped for...lots of volume swimming.  My bilateral breathing is getting better, but I still have to think about it.  When I get into some of the longer swims, I resort back to breathing on my right only.

One of the coaches also worked with me on my recovery, and getting my elbows a little higher.  Also to get my chest out forward and my head slightly up.  I was avoiding this before because I figured it would make my legs sink...but it actually worked out okay.  I felt like I had more forward momentum through each stroke.

I think I would love to be a pro baseball player.  I like to laugh and goof off, so baseball provides enough breaks during the game where you can do so...while in the dugout, etc.  I'm not as interested in playing sports like football where you have to be so intense all the time.  I think being a pro golfer would be fun too...but honestly, I don't like the stress of trying to shoot low.  I just like to go out there and hit the ball...if I hit it in the lake...ahhh...whatever...give me another beer.

Baseball is also not as taxing on your body as say football, and it's just a great game to play.  You constantly get to travel, and having the highest average salary among all pro sports doesn't hurt either....

mchally - 2010-04-05 3:50 PM Just finished a 22 minute run (a bit over 2 miles) at school.  Running on Asphalt sucks.  I felt ok while I was doing it, but I am feeling slight twinges in my shins now.  I probably should have mixed in a little more walking.

Howdy Mel - sorry about the Asphalt but it is better than concrete

Concrete is definately the worst, especially concrete with slight grade for drainage!  HORRIBLE.  For my street runs, I try to stay off the sidewalks and run on the asphalt or dirt next to concrete if possible.

I'm with you on this....but this is usually how I have to run(sidwalks for shorter runs) for my long run if I don't want to do the same loop over and over! I usually run through the parkways, so I will run against traffic so I "even" out my hips on the way back!

brick94513 - 2010-04-05 2:23 PM Well I was planning on a road ride this morning, but my wife left my tights in the washer!  Errrrrr....  So, changed the plan and went for a little run.  Pace was pretty pedestrian.  My legs are still sore from running stairs three days ago.

Planning on taking the boys to the movies later, baseball practice, then hopefully to the pool for my first swim of the month.

come on now...at least she washed them and didn't put them in the dryer! WinkI always have to look at the positives when it comes to laundry! Hubby tries to help....I went through so many clothes that he either shrank or dyed a different color! BUT he tried! He is so much better and now nothing of mine goes in the dryer!

Did it work this time?  I think my computer at work might block uploads?????

Anyways, these stairs are down at the beach.  They connect the beach parking lot to the homes on the bluff above the Capitola village.  My firehouse is located a few minutes from here.  So, every once and a while, we'll take the engine over and run these in the morning.  The stairs are roughly 5 to 6 building floors.  We did this 10x with pushups then ran half mile for warm down.  Great workout, but I always get really bad DOMS afterwards, especially in the calfs!

Alright that puts a whole lot together - you are a firefighter not military like I suspected

And that sounds brutal.  The whole detachment or just you and a couple of buddies?

Do you have fitness tests to pass every year??

Sorry - LOL

We have a mandatory fitness program.  Shift starts at 0700 and we are expected to be working out from 0730-0830.  I have a really great crew that takes the physical training to heart.  Doesn't get much better than getting paid to workout!

And this is why I love my job!

brick94513 - 2010-04-05 10:26 PM Missed my swim tonight.  Getting a little frustrated with my son's baseball coach.  He keeps moving practice around on us.  First, it was at 5:30, then 4 if it rains, and then I get home from the movies and it is at 4:45.  We were running late and dashed out the door.  I forgot all my swim gear in the process.  Oh well, next time.

uggggg!

Cool! I wish I could get to a masters...Hubby and older kids start too early and that would leave my 2 younger kids at home to get ready for school by themselves....not a good thing! And in the summer when I could do it I would rather practice OW then be in the pool!

Again I am up early when I don't have to be! What is this? No next week when the kids are back at school I won't be able to drag my arse out of bed! It is storming pretty good here...lots of lightning,  rain, rain go away because Kim has a run to do today! I was not able to ride to work yesterday like I wanted to but I did get a swim in. I'll get a trainer ride in today and hoping for a run! Then speaking of baseball...I am going to the game tonight with some friends!
Have a good day A TEAM!

tri808 - 2010-04-05 11:14 PM Heading out to masters class.

I'm hoping today will be a little easier.  I don't mind swimming large volumes...but when we start doing crazy stuff like butterfly sprints I just want to throw up.

Now, that sounds like fun!  Takes me back to high school swimming...  I swam butterfly and loved it.  Most did think I was crazy though...  sure I couldn't do butterfly sprints anymore!

Does it have to be a sport where there are real professional teams now?  I completely suck at volleyball but I would say beach volleyball.  Anything that would get me on the beach everyday.  In my opinion, it doesn't get any better than sand between the toes and not having to get dressed up everyday.

I used to tell my mom when I was growing up that I wanted to be a professional beach bum when I grew up.  She was thrilled.  Wink
