tkr2770 - 2011-04-06 9:10 PM I have a silly question? Last night all I dreamt about was running. I think it was all the run evaluation we were Blogging. Anyway slept terrible, I did run this morning, but my legs, calves, shins and thighs just ached all day. I had a protien smoothie with peaches, mangos and banana after to try and add K+, any other ideas. I was real sore most of the day.

My cure-all...stretching, foam roller, and water. Water is my cure all for EVERYTHING

Can't wait to see your bike...I can imagine how excited you are!

Thanks for the help,

I did lots of stretching and always lots of water, took 2 aleve and went to bed. Feeling much better today.

Terry, I use a roller on my legs after running and drink lots of water. Protien replacement is not as important after shorter runs( 5K or less) as water.  Often the pain in the shins is related to overuse. DO NOT...I repeat...DO NOT increase your run volume more than 10%/ week. You are only asking for trouble/injury,. I am looking forward to seeing bike pics!!!!

My favorite GU is chocolate. It is fantastic. I used to use Hammer gel apple cinnamon...but once I found chocolate I was hooked

My goggles are aquashere vistas...they rock, no goggle eyes ever!!!!

HEY WE MADE IT TO THE MENTOR GROUP ARCHIVES!!!!

I saw an ortho for a second opinion on my knee and she felt that I have pretty bad arthritis in my femur. Going to try getting some ortho visc which is like a "fake " synovial fluid. She advised against running...at  least 6 months possibly not at all. I am sad...but I am just going to concentrate on becoming a kick a$$ cyclist /swimmer. Hopefully by fall I will be running again

I like the taste and texture of GU and chocolate is the BEST!! However I have found that GU doesn't always agree with me so I use powerbar gels instead...luckily I have found a chocolate one that is yummy but is hard to find so the espresso one is next on my list.

I am now on the hunt for the goggles...thanks

Oh Marianne, I am so sorry to hear about the no running thing. I hope the visc works and you find yourself out on the roads (with your feet) soon!!! When will you be getting the visc...I'm assuming its an injection? It is something that you will have to do a few times or how does it work?

I sometimes get Gu Belly when I don't drink enough water after eating energy gel.

Water is mandatory to use gels properly.  If you don;t drink you'll force your gut to suck water from your blood stream to digest the sugars in the gel.  If you're already slightly dehydrated then you're going to suffer a net performance decrease as blood volume drops and the amount of o2 provided to the working muscles drops.  The numbers that come to mind are a 2-3% dehydration causes a 10-12% performance lost.

the study, which was published in the October 6 edition of the British journal Acta Physiologca, concluded, “Mild hypohydration exacerbated cardiovascular and thermoregulatory strain and tended to impair endurance performance, but aerobic fitness attenuated the physiological effects

I thought that might be the problem but it doesn't happen with powerbar gels so i'm not sure what the difference is.

We are still active and I don't want to hijack Marianne's mentor authority so I will leave the answer to her ~ I just didn't want you to feel too neglected in here

Sure do Bob!!! The more the merrier!! Its only a few of us that are active...Please take a moment to introduce yourself to the group.

We do monthly challenges. This month is a 3 for ...3X20 ounces of water/ day, three times strength training per week and pick your weakest area and do it 3x/week. Log it in your logs...so I can inspire you from time to time

I will confess...I have been bad about the water this week but met the other 2

WELCOME BOB!!!!!

I'm sure you are happy with your Ortho, I do have an idea you could research, It's called MAKO it is used for arthritis of the knee. I resurfaces the bone. We have one hear in CO. It is a very less invasive knee repair. You could check it out. Recovery time is pretty quick.

What a great day. Swim lesson this am, I am improving. Then it was nice outside so met some fellow triathletes for a nice easy 12+ mile ride.

Lots of water, out last night for drinks so I upped the oz's today.

Thanks Terri. I read a few articles about this and it seems like a viable option for me. I went to a Dr at New England Baptist in Boston which is Bostons "bone Hospital". When I see the MD next week I will ask her about it. Thanks.

I met my water intake the last 2 days..3x bike and 3x strength...phew...got it done.

It has been beautiful here the past 2 days. Love riding in shorts. Hoping to bump up my riding to 1.5 hours today.

Hello group!  Today, I actually biked the 12.4 mile distance for my Sprint in June.  It felt really great, and my time was 64 minutes.  I did have to stop twice to adjust my 8 yo daughter's helmet, and she did tire a little bit, but it was worth riding with her.  I'm feeling more confident about the distances, now.  Tomorrow, I will swim and run.  I'm up to 3.5 miles even though I'm not that fast, I still have time to work on the speed aspects.  Any suggestions on what would be a reasonable time for my first sprint?  I was thinking that between 2 hours 15 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes would be respectable.

Lori

Lori it all depends on the course and the weather.

If the water is cold it might take you longer or shorter( depending on how bad you want out). The bike is very dependent on the course. Flat is always faster. And the run...is dependent on the course and the weather. It can often be hot by the time the run begins. There are so many variables. Just continue to train as you have been and go out and have fun.

Couple of suggestions:

Practice open water swimming( I am assuming this is an OWS). It is VERY different from pool swimming.

Ride the bike course if you live close enough. Its nice to know before hand what you will encounter on the course

Watch videos on Youtube of transitions. Practice setting up your transition area so you know what to do

Do a few bricks where you bike than run. Run for a t least .5 miles after you bike just so you can feel what your legs will be like on the day of the race

I hope this helps.

DONT worry about your speed...adrenaline will make you faster on race dayCool

Marianne and group - thanks so much for having me !!

Name: rbriggz/Bob

Story: This will be my fourth season of competing in triathlon. I'm 47 years old. I work in Information Technology. I've been generally active most of my life, sometimes more than others. Played tennis as a kid and still play at least once a week. I golf, ski/snowboard and i've played a lot of other recreational sports - basketball, volleyball, badmitton I come from a rather sports minded family. Most of our vacations revolved around skiing. I've been interested in triathlon since i was in high school and saw the ironman competition on tv. It seemed so daunting! My interest became renewed about 6 or 7 years ago while training at a gym who's owner had completed in the ironman. A lot of the workouts were spin workouts which really got me interested in biking.  It was a boot camp so we did all kinds of crazy stuff like tire flipping, carrying sand bags, boxing, etc). It got me in the best shape of my life. Sadly, i'm not in quite the same shape. After the gym went under i started looking into triathlon and came across this wonderful site (this one - BT). It wasn't the swim, bike or run that was seemed difficult, it was logistics of the whole race. For example - what do i wear? do i change clothes between events? After a lot of reading and asking a lot of questions to BTer's, i finally got so much information that by the time i did my first tri i was standing in transition trying to decide what to take from the overabundance of stuff i brought. Mind you, it was a sprint, i probably didn't need any of it! Maybe a water bottle. I've was semi-plagued by injuries over first two years and i was limited to just one sprint each year. I did however compete in a number of mini-tri's each year (5 or 6) . I'd like to do an OLY this year. My ulimate goal (right now) is to complete a HIM. I don't see an IM in my future. I'd love to do some longer off-road tri's. I've been doing more mountain biking lately and i love it! Okay, i'm officially rambling now - end.

Family Status: Married with 2 teenagers (nuff said)

Current Training: Over the winter training was spinning, treddy running and yoga (i try to do yoga once a week) and strength training. Getting my pool membership tomorrow (i say that a lot).  I love swimming, i hate chlorine.

This years races: Multiple mini-tris (off road and regular) definitely a sprint or two and hopefully an OLY. I know, i should be signed up by now.

2010 races: Probably 7 mini's - 4 off-road, 3 on-road. (they're just shy of sprint distance, cost $20 and i just show up and go, no pre-reg)

Weight Loss: I would love to get 10 to 15 lbs off. I'd settle for 5.

How is everyone today?  Another perfect weeks starts today.

I found some nice red and black GP4's for my baby.  Rin looks good in black and red.  Rain in the morning, went for a run.  When the clouds cleared I went for a fast 26mile ride around the lake.  She's happy and I'm happy.  Sore but happy.  Yes it rained on my ride but I've decided I'm not going to let a little rain hold me back any longer.

Let go.

Morning all.....

Welcome Bob. Glad you could join us.When is your first race? What oly are you thinking of doing? I highly suggest Cranberry Olympic in Lakeville MA. A lot of BTers do it, and its a fun race. The course is flat and really pretty. The swim is in a smaller lake and a little murky but the rest of the course makes up for it. The race is in August and put on by Sun Multisport. Check it oout.

Mark glad you got your ride in despite the rain. I am going to make a few comments about riding in the rain

Stay off painted lines when it rains...when wet, they are like ice. Also if you need to cross railroad tracks be certain that you go over  them perpendicular. Anything less than perfectly perpendicular and your wheel can slip right out from under you. Can you tell I have crashed on RR tracks?  If you know its going to rain and the temps are warmer , bring a little anti fog  spray for your glasses. Nothing worse than not being able to see!!!Riding in the rain can be fun...but carries a little more risk. Be careful out there

Michelle: Glad you are enjoying the job and Sami liked school. Always nice to know the kids are happy when you are at work.

Terri, did the new bike arrive yet? Thanks for the info on the knee surgery. I am definately interested in finding out if they offer it where my MD works in Boston. One of the Boston hospitals has to have it. Sounds like it would be perfect for me! Gives me hope that something other than a knee replacement will work to get me running again.

Hope you are all working on you challenge...perhaps there will be valuable gifts and prizes for the winner this month!!!!
