Member 43 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread So I am finally starting to get into some bigger miles...72 mile ride Sat with a 14 mile run Sunday. The problem? Cramps -mainly on the ride. Do any of you all use Electrolyte tabs or salt tabs? Just curious if they help. I am hydrating pretty well during the week and definitely during the workout, but am still cramping up. I really want to figure out the nutritional side soon and am looking for some help!
Thanks guys! |

Thanks guys! I use salt sticks or lava salts. They help. Of course on race da its like 40 degrees colder than what I train in but there it is |

Regular 70 Marlton, NJ | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I've been using Hammer Nutrition Endurolytes for the last 2 years and they have been working well for me. I usually take 2 before a race and during the bike leg - 2 per hour. Obviously hydrating on a daily basis as well. |

I HATE 388 past Blue Springs road. If you never rode it, be sure to tighten your bolts and screws. How many miles are on that section? On 388, maybe 3.5 miles past Blue Springs and back (7 miles of bumpy hell). My friend's rear hydration wings wiggled loose. The rest of the route was perfect. Hug the white line. The compression cracks are milder there and you will hardly notice them. And then thank your lucky stars that you don't live in TX. I would KILL to ride on 388 right now...because it would feel so smooth. |

I guess I just don't think that the road is all that bad. Worse than the rest of the course, but on my scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is smooth asphalt and 10 is the worst road you can ride on I still would only give it a 4 at most. Certainly not worth the amount of complaining people do about it. Compression cracks are not that big a deal. Then again, I spent 6.5 months riding in Iraq. Perspective. |

It might not be sodium intake or hydration causing the cramps. It could be your position on the bike, or pushing the bike too hard, but salt tabs are always a good start. All salt tabs are not created equal so be aware of how much sodium and what else is in each tab. The Hammer products contain FAR less than Salt Stick, but cost the same for a bottle. You have to take like 4 endurloytes for every one salt stick tablet. |

Thanks guys! I'm a chronic cramper because I'm on Crestor. I swear by Hammer Endurolytes. I've gone on several long rides and runs where I thought I wouldn't need them or may have forgotten them. That hurt. |

Member 186 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread pjcycles63 - 2012-07-23 7:26 PM Cramps can be a serious problem for some people. There are many causes but in most cases it has to do with diet and eating habits combined with an elevated heart rate. Based on you saying that it is mainly a problem on your bike and you ran fine after, leads me to believe it could be something you ate before the ride or the day before and possibly not what you are taking during your workout. My suggestion is, keep a log of your daily nutrition and also make notes on how you feel during each workout. Look back at the data each week and adjust as needed. Also train with a HRM and note your HR during the onset of the cramp....hope this helps, good luck. Member 43 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Thanks to all - great advice on the nutrition journal as well. Going to start with Endurolytes (I like Hammer's approach to things) and checking my hydration and nutrition for the few days leading up to the long ride. Appreciate all the help. 80 miler this weekend so it will be a good test. |

Just keep track of the mg you are taking, not necessarily how many tabs. |

Veteran 593 Mandeville | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Finally got my flo disc in. She'll need to be trimmed up a bit (remove the hydration wing, put back on the downtueb cage, put a mini saddle bag tucked up as close to the seat as possible), but she's just about race ready, long before I am. |

Thanks - I am...I started with 200mg per hour today (120 Sodium -80 chloride) on an 92 mile ride. Seemed pretty good. Will keep testing though. PS,...that bike is AWESOME! how do you like the Cobb saddle? Just got min a few weeks ago and definitely the most comfortable saddle I've ridden... |

Expert 1164 Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Have you all started thinking about nutrition yet? If not, you might want to begin the process Primarily I have been using Perform and GU as a way to do total on the course nutrition this time around. So far so good, with some solids thrown in to keep the stomach full. I still haven't quite figured out how much I should be doing at once (like how many GU per hour and how much water to Perform I should be consuming) but I think I can make it work. In the past, Infinit has been the drink of choice, but it was cumbersome carrying around so many bottles and still left me feeling a bit hungry. Anyone else going the Perform route? I hear EFS is a pretty good nutrition set to try out, and we all know that Infinit is respectable. What works best for you? |

I like it has a little protien in it and I like the taste still after 5 years of using it. Yeah I have to carry I with me but I am in no danger of winning I use twizzlers for solids. They taste WAY better than gels fit nicely in a bento box when cut in half and don't melt. Plus I can buy 2 pounds of them for the cost of 3 gels. Keep it simple. People totally over think nutrition. Take in fluids and sugar. Use what is palatable. HAve a back up plan. Edited by Socks 2012-07-31 11:24 AM |

I can't find anything on the website with respect to additional cut off times. All I know is that the bike cutoff @ mile 112 is 5:30 pm, so you have from 9:30 (swim cutoff) till then, or 8 hours at minimum. I would think you need to get to special needs by half of that time, or 1:30 pm |
