I did the same in Boise and Onionman which a cold Olympic race in May. Double cap works well for me. I don't like like having the strap under my chin. It bugs me.

Well, my running is going to take a backseat for a while - doc put me in a boot and said no running for a while.

Has anyone had any long term problems from an ankle sprain?  I sprained my left ankle last Jan and then again last Sep.  Both times it healed pretty quickly (or so I thought).  A couple weeks ago, it started hurting again, maybe a 1 on the pain scale, so nothing significant.  But now it is at a 2-3, so I went to the doctor, who said he thinks it is ligament damage that may never go away, and could get worse over time if not treated now.

I'm supposed to get an MRI early next week to make sure there isn't something else, but he's 99.9% sure that's what it is - there is zero swelling or bruising - just a little pain.

So, I expect no running for a while and then significantly reduced mileage from what I'm used to, spending a TON of time on the bike to make up for the lack of run training.

Anyone heard of long term ankle problems that just crop back up out of nowhere?  I'm so bummed about this, especially since I thought it was over and done with 6+ months ago.

My thoughts are: try and find a chiropractor that does ART, get a Trigger Point lower leg kit, and do single leg balancing to strengthen the stabalizing muscles. Sorry to hear that it's acting up.

I'm surprised your doc wants to put you in a boot.  Most sprains are treated (once the pain is gone) with active therapy, ie, strengthening the accessory muscles near and around the ankle.  It seems to me that wearing a boot would weaken all of those muscles, remember a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.

I am not a doctor, but am well experienced with sprains and strains.  If you do end up in a boot, then I would recommend pool running.  Good luck, and sorry to hear of your injury.

Oh yeah, my doc gave me resistance bands to tie around a table leg for strengthening.   You can get full range of motion with those.

I would definilty suggest lots of deep water aqua jogging!!!  I haven't expereinced ankle sprains since high school basketball (and that was a VERY long time ago!!).  But two years ago I got a stress fracture at the beginning of a HIM plan and I didn't run for 9 1/2 weeks but did a ton of aqua jogging.  My run was great at the race and I really think it helped, even if it's mind numbing at times!

Well you look younger then I do so that might help but I have the same thing . I severely sprained my ankle( night running on newly paved road off the 6inch edge)...That would have been the time to put the foot in a boot so it would heal properly...I didn't and the ligaments reattached not perfectly I have some pain in different areas of the foot from time to time especially after a high mileage week. Nothing I can't live with as time heals most wounds....Writing the alphabet with my big toe while seated and swimming with fins on seems to help restore the flexibility the best... good luck keep us informed.

I started training yesterday with a six mile run and spin today. I am WAY behind! Need to ramp up here... Started a new job and just now looked at the calendar.

Did the first 100 of the year last weekend followed by a 11 mile run sunday.  Didn't feel to bad considering it was a 100.  I've got another 5.5 hour ride and 1:45 run this weekend.  What does everyone else have planned?

Oh boy, you're way ahead of me on ride length.  The longest I've done thus far this year was 60, but I'll be ramping up quite a bit over the next few weeks.  The plan is 100's each weekend starting mid-April.

I'm racing Galveston 70.3 this weekend.  I'll either be running the half, walking the half, or DNF'ing after the bike depending on what my doc says after the MRI I have this afternoon. :/

I did 90 on Sunday with a full loop on the course. On Saturday I raced a local 5 miler after a 2 mile warm up then ran the 5 mile course again after. I'm paying for it now though. I've been exhausted with dead legs all week. Not sure what I'm going to do this week. Probably another loop on the course though.

Wow 100 miler already?  I have only one 100 miler in my entire plan!  Luckily for me it's a recovery week since I am in the guard and have drill, which really messes with training.  I will get up at about 330 to do 40 miles on the trainer and swim on my lunch on Saturday, 8 mile run on Sunday after drill.

Good luck with the MRI thedallasceliac!

I also got 2 OWS in the last couple of weeks the water temp in North Carolina is low to mid 60's already.....we had a very mild winter.

This Saturday, we have a 50-55 mile ride followed by a 7 mile run and on Sunday, we are doing our 2nd 100 mile ride followed by a 3 mile run.  I am a little ahead of where I normally am distance wise on the bike from previous IM training plans.  I told my coach I wanted to see if there was a difference on race day if we ramped up the miles a little more this year and got in a few more 100+ mile rides.  only time will tell.  but right now, my legs are shot!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only have two 100milers planned in May, but I will try to sneak in a marathon next month. Ran 17 last week. This week is a recovery week and I am feeling really lazy. Plus it's been raining. Hoping to have my "new" bike together in a few weeks. You won't miss me on the course- it's pink!
