Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED Kath2163 - 2012-01-04 12:27 AM Great goals everyone! I have to admit, I haven't made any formal goals yet. I know that I want to run more often but that is about it. I think I am just enjoying not having a training plan to follow or having to do long training days. I have been thinking about what I want to do this season in terms of races and other events. I know I want to race less. I tend to over book myself and I don't want to do that this year. Maybe by February I will have some goals in place
Considering that you are still fairly close to when you completed IMAZ, a little down time of unstructured training is still good for January. It is a fine line between maintaining the fitness you built leading up to the race, yet still letting your body and more importantly your mind recover. You'll know when you are ready for the structure again! Maybe focus on running for now. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED CyborgQueen - 2012-01-04 12:33 AM Got in the pool for the first time since May. Feels like I never left. I was worried that I would be like a flopping fish, but nope. Took it slow and easy today. Looking forward to get my bike to kiss some asphalt this weekend. It's been too long. I don't want to be crazy and do a 50 miler on first week back training (I learned my lesson, screwed up my back when I did that last year). Anyhoo - I'll bite and play Ken's Jan's goals Triathlon Goals: 1 - Get back into Triathlon training nice and easy. Don't rush. No need to get burned out this early in the game. 2 - Balance schoolwork and training and housework. 3 - Start registering for Triathlons 4 - Get "The One" saddle. (having a little bit of saddle woes...going through testing phase now, I'm really close. So far, I really like Selle Italia Diva, but the nose is a hair too wide. Seat area is perfect, but nose, not so much. Luckily, my LBS is very kind and will swap out...even though it's way past it's return date. Bike guy loves me. :-))
Other goals: 1 - take Stardust (my dog) out to Dog park at least 3 times 2 - take Stardust hiking, and plan more hiking/camping trips. 3 - Finish the game Fallout 3. :-P Sounds like a good plan DJ. Getting the bike seat comfortable is important, although I have been lucky and the ones that came with the bike were good for me. When I wore the one out I bought a Cobb, and really liked it too. Good for you getting to the pool! |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED IceManScott - 2012-01-04 7:50 AM I did strength exercises on the computrainer last night. 70 mins with 3 X 15 mins at 85% @ 55 rpm to resemble long hill climbs. There were 3 X 1 min of extremely high power at 120% during each set. We do these for a few weeks. They are the best strength exercise because they target the exact muscles we use for climbing. I also did some kettlebells, squats, stretching, yoga and foam rollers. Glad to be back at it with the coach. I run an hour tonight and more PT. In the 30s so I'll go outside. The Paleo thing is going well. Lots of energy so far. Just fruit for breakfast, a salad with chicken for lunch and moderate amount of meat, veggies and fruit for supper. I am down about 400 calories each day from where I was with the grains and breads. So far nothing seems to be suffering. Had plenty of power on the bike last night. I know this isn't true, but I just feel less bulky already. Have a great day. Ice. Nice work Ice! I am finding some good with the paleo, as in the scale in the hotel has me dropping weight. I know what you mean about the bulky feeling going away too. I am also finding it is pretty easy to follow while traveling, which is good for me. I also seem to be sleeping a little better than I was, not waking up as much. On the down side, I seemed a bit flat on my run this morning. I probably need to start logging on Livestrong again, I may not be getting enough calories or possibly too low in fat intake. I still have a lot to learn about the paleo program though. But, knocking the weight off fast is encouraging. |

I’m contemplating a marathon in the spring. It would be by far my longest run so I was looking for a “beginner” plan and I found a couple that seem very doable to me. But I was curious about one issue, during the peak week the longest run is only 20 miles. Is that typical with a run only plan? Typically, especially plans geared towards either 1st time marathoners or time crunched athletes, the longest long run is 20 miles. But even higher mileage programs the long run doesn't get much above 20 miles in most cases. Some may go to 22 miles. The return is not worth the injury risk or the cost of the recovery time. Where you will usually see the most difference is in the length of the mid week runs and the number of runs per week. How many runs a week do the plans have and what is the peak mileage in the plans that you are looking at? Have you picked out a race yet? This is a 4X a week plan (rest on Tues-Fri-Sun) Peak total mileage is 38 miles (for this week Mon 5 - Tues rest - Wed 8 - Thurs 5 -Fri rest - Sat 20 - Sun rest) Race is the Long Island Marathon May 6th gives me 18 weeks - the plan is actual 16 weeks but I'm using these 2 weeks to get back into a rhythm. Given that I'm staying focused on the run it seems like a very reasonable plan. I just want to finish the race. Looks like a good plan Adam! Personally, I think I would take one or two of the rest days and get some saddle time as I think there are some cross over benefits, and as long as you keep the bike efforts reasonable, it may actually benefit the recovery. But that is for you to decide! Is the Long Island Marathon a hilly course or fairly flat? |

Regular 231 Maryland | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED I love the myfitnesspal.com site. It is so easy to use and it lets you track calories, as well as activity. It also gives you a little goal, calculating where you could be in 5 wks. if every day were like the one that you just logged. |

On my rest days I'm doing 2200 on the BodyBugg which is about 400 lower than tested by the local kinesiology department. I'm going with the lower reading now. I have only been doing Paleo this week, remember, buyt so far I am right at 2200 every day. Fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch, a balanced meal of meat, veggies and fruit for supper. I am weighing the meat again. I have always logged on LiveSTRONG.com myplate and also now BodyBugg. So far I feel more focused, more alert during the day. I have been getting up more at night but I had that when I was losing weight and oh yeah, prostate cancer, so who knows. I suspect it is a switch in body functions. I am loving the lack of a bloated feeling. I may try fasting as soon as next week. Run and physical training tonight. Sunny and 47 in Central Illinois. Dig it. Back in the pool in the morning with the masters (no heat, heard it's ice water, boo hoo) and then a CT workout Thursday night. Rest day Friday. Brick Saturday, long ride Sunday, yada, yada...

Just food for thought. I use LoseIt! app on my iPhone. When I first started using it, I was VERY skeptical, but once I plugged in the numbers, the pounds shedded easily (quit for a year, but now I'm back into it...weight's been stable, so that's good). I discovered that I was pretty much overeating, especially with carbs, even though I eat in small meals - with exception of Pizza...I can eat 4 slices easily. :-) They also added the barcode thing. It's pretty niffy, but still needs a little bit work as sometimes the calories don't match up. I like it a lot because I can eat WHATEVER I want...I just have to watch the calories. It's extremely helpful because I can eat 5 Dots candy instead of wolfing down 20. It's all about portion control, which is an issue with my fiance and I. If I know I want to have three slices of pizza, I eat it on the day that I will have LONG workouts or hard workouts. :-) |

Extreme Veteran 1700 Normal, Ill. | Subject: RE: kenj - motivated triathletes in training - CLOSED I just did my Body Bugg and found 3200 burn with 1800 consumed. Not sure how that will rock. I ran an hour at a solid tempo pace for me for 10K and then did 30 mins of PT with the kettle bells, pushups, planks. I was a little light headed for a bit at the end of the 4th circuit with the bells. I think I will settle into knowing how much I can fuel up for workouts soon and just use liquids to get it done. Tomorrow morning, 4:30, pool with no heater. Still have a little pink skin from the food allergy. Pills gone today so if I still have it, I guess the nurse gets called to see what they suggest. Also after work, 2 hour bike. Have a great night. |
