I spent this weekend moving my oldest son permanently back into our home -- including a dog! I feel so blessed and relieved. My family is finally back together. I managed to get a couple runs and swims in -- we stayed at a very nice hotel (a Hilton) with a salt water pool. I could definitely get used to that. I run in Saucony Grid Ignition. When I started running again, a little over a year ago, I ran in a pair of Puma flats -- I loved them. But my Achilles started acting up, so I decided I needed a little more support. The Ignition seem to have just what I need. Sometimes I want to go back to a more minimal shoe, but whenever I try on a pair, my feet start complaining. So I'll stick with the ignitions for now. I have three pair -- one still brand new -- so I don't really have any excuse to buy another pair of running shoes. lol Doesn't stop me from looking. |

Except for the raw spot rubbed on my heel by those new shoes ![]() What's on tap for everyone this week? I have just a normal week of run focused training. I had trouble getting up this mornng, so I'll run in the evening today, rather than my normal morning run. I prefer starting the day off with a run, but it doesn't always happen. BTW, have you tried a bandaid on the back of the foot? I had a pair a while back that I had to protect myself that way. Not the best answer, but it may help while they break in. I am hopeful that I'll get the call to schedule an interview for a new job. My current one changed a bit again (a yearly occurence), and while it isn't anything bad at all, I am a bit troubled by some of what I see here. And after 12 years, it my just be that a change of venue would be a good idea. If it is meant to be, it will be. If I am meant to stay here, I will. |

I'm sure it will all work out for the best. I haven't had time to do anything since I got home Sunday evening. Our local pool is still closed -- the athletic director promised me yesterday that it would be open this afternoon, which doesn't help me this morning. But I should be able to get in for a swim tomorrow morning. I hope everyone has a great day today. My life is crazy busy right now. I feel like everyone is mad at me because I don't have adequate time for anyone or anything. |

I just got back from a run - bandaids on the back of both feet. Worked great up until the last mile, when the bandaid covering the broken blister worked it's way loose.... I stopped 3 times to try and get it to stick again, and finally gave up. I ended up taking my shoes off and walking home barefoot when I got back into my neighborhood (not very far) even though it's drizzly and in the 40's.... I think I might return the shoes and see if another pair rubs any less. I'm bummed, because, like I said, I really LOVE these shoes, otherwise! I'll continue using bandaids on the heel, too - guess I just need to find some that stick better and will hold on for longer runs! Good luck with your job interview - I'm sure, as you say, you'll end up where you are meant to be. Edited by jsnowash 2012-02-15 10:44 AM |

Have you checked out Altra yet? Zero drop, getting rave reviews, won an award at the Outdoor Retailer Show last month, have won another award from one of the running magazines. They are zero drop, there's several different versions now, too, for trail running vs roads, etc. They come with a couple different insoles too so you can decide what feels best to you. They look a little like 70's shoes, with a really wide toe box, but they let your foot stretch out and your toes do what they're supposed to in order to balance you and help propel you forward. They have a little bit of a cutout in the back, but not like my brooks adrenalines 9mostly beacuse they dont come up as high--a plus when you have achilles isues). Plus, they're not as expensive as brooks. I'm wearing my brand new pair right now. I was hoping to go run inthem today, but it snowed this morning and it looks like it's going to snow again any minute now. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good Morning, I hope everyone is "Working for the Weekend". Yes, I am a child of the 80's. I did my short run this morning, while trying to figure out what I need to do to break the plateau I am at. I have been back to running for almost 2 years. It seems like I plateau at points (both distance and speed). And I have hit one of those now. Recently, I upped my mileage and that has helped my distance, obviously. At one point a while back I added intervals, which seemed to help the speed at that time. I can't really add more mileage due to time constraints. And I do an occasional fartlek now. My guess would be more consistency in the interval/fartlek area would probably help me get through this. Oh yeah, I have also maintained a fairly consistent stretching routine. I had stopped doing that a while back and I think my knees protested. Does anyone else have any ideas? My next question is really directed at me. What is my problem with eating???? I have a weight goal in mind, why can't I stick to it??? ARGH!!!!! OK, I got that off my chest, thanks for listening ![]() I hope everyone has a great weekend and keeps moving forward on their goals. And, more importantly, I hope that all is good with your families, jobs, and health. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Busy week (this is becoming the norm)... I did make all my workouts including a nice 8.4 miles this am. I'm really trying to take these run "low and slow"as to not burn out and avoid injury. So far so good! I'm hoping to get outside on my bike soon. It always a toss up when the weather's nice (like today) but I don't mind spending 90 minutes doing a workout on the trainer, but 8 miles on the treadmill and I may end up catatonic! I started using Saucony Kinvara last year and loved them. I didn't train in them a lot (usually only on my brick workouts) but it was huge difference in racing putting on those lightweight shoes as opposed to trainers. I'm giving the Pearl Izumi Iso Transition a try this year...they feel like slippers! |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My workouts have been woefully inadequate this week. I taught Tuesday, Wednesday, and I teach tomorrow am, so it' s not like i've been a total slug... I've got an opportunity to pick up another program at the gym. It's a core focused program, canned like the other programs I teach, but it's only a half hour. Part of me wants to because it's one more "feather in my hat" so to speak, but then there's that little voice in the back of my head that says "it's just one more thing to take away from your race training". Plus the training for it is $250 and takes all weekend. What do you guys think? My life has stabilized and bit, and I look forward to running after spin class tomorrow, and hopefully getting a few short lunch time runs in next week. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys... How's it going? Seems like everybody is plugging along, despite all of the many challenges this group has faced! I "officially" begin IM training next week, and have been working on my training plan. Which leads me to my next question for the group -- how many of you are following (or trying to follow) any kind of structured training plan? If you are, do you try to follow the plan as closely as possible, or do you modify it? For my IM plan, I am using Matt Fitzgerald's plans as a general guide, but modifying to add an extra run each week and to fit my schedule. If anyone wants or needs some help with developing or tweaking your training plans, let me know! I'd love to help out - it would be good experience for me as I work my way toward that coaching certification.... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning! Chris -- I'm right with you and the eating. The more I work out, the less will power I have. I guess I'm mentally justifying it because of the calories I've burned. As far as the running question, I'm not sure. If it's like other skills, plateaus are common and just have to be endured. It sounds like you are handling it pretty well. Jenny -- I'm roughly following a plan -- by which I mean I pull it up and look at it every day or so. I was just telling myself this weekend that I need to seriously attack the plan. It's just the 20 week run focused Olympic plan from the site here. I am hoping to do a bit more running than the plan calls for, but February has been pitifully weak as far as running goes -- well, actually, training has completely taken a back seat. But the pool is open again, and I'm beginning to feel like I can get control of my workload at work. I just need to tell people that I can't do everything because last week, more things were put on my plate than I removed from my plate. I hate that. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Got over my bout with a cold/fever last week. Beautiful weather yesterday in New England. Got an (almost) 7 mile run in shorts! Final week of the Jorge winter challenge plan for me -- test week. Time to suffer! Hope everyone is starting the week off right. Anyone else planning on ordering some Flo race wheels? I don't have a set of race wheels and plan on shooting into the pre-order on Thursday (60 front/90 rear). There are more details on the main Bt page if anyone is interested. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Saturday was my first run or exercise afe 6 days. Life keeps getting in the way. I missed a run because we had a basketball game at the same time. I may miss practices but not games. I just didn't have the motivation to go on my treadmill. my next run was canceled because my running partner was working. Running at night alone was not an option. Again, can't stand the dreadmill. I ran this morning but I still missed my bike class. My car transmission is going so its in the shop. My hubby's car can't fit my bike. Lovey |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jenny, I mulled your questions around in my pea sized brain for a bit and here is what I have come up with: What areas of your fitness would you like to improve? Please select all that apply: • Lose weight • Improve aerobic endurance • Improve muscular endurance • Improve flexibility/range of motion Sport specific training – list sport(s): Triathlon, specifically the swim and run portions. Think about some specific goals you might have in relation to the areas checked above. Please list those goals below. Be as specific as possible (for example, if you checked “lose weight”, state how much weight you would like to lose.) I WOULD LIKE TO ACHIEVE: Goal: By March 10 I'd like to be 210 lbs. I’d also like to maintain this as my weight for the year. This goal is a bit of a stretch for me, as my “comfortable” weight has been about 220. Goal: Improved triathlon times - during this year I hope to improve both my swim and run times. I am content with my current bike abilities, although getting better there would not be a bad thing. No deadline. Goal: Improved aerobic and muscular endurance - I will be stretching out the long runs and rides over the next 6 months, in an effort to push my capacity up. An overall increase in this area will be beneficial, not only in one sport, but across all areas of life. There is no hard and fast deadline on this, but instead I look at it as a life goal, just an effort to improve this aspect of my life. Goal: Improve flexibility/range of motion – Much like the one stated above, this is more of a life goal, as I have found that I just generally feel better when I perform a daily stretching routine. I have found that I am less susceptible to injury and aches and pains seem to go away quicker. This may all be in my head, but it is what works for me. |
