Hello team.

Thank you for the support and prayers.  Yesterday was a very emotional day.  I raced.  I got down to Pleasant Prairie, and warmed up on my bike, lined up for the swim, and started.  There was a lot of contact, so I quickly adapted and got into a rhythm.  Exited the water 3 minutes faster than last year.  Walked through T1 (which is VERY hard to do!) and hopped onto my bike.  Ran into a teammate who was right with me, and as I passed, yelled at her to keep up with me.  She did.  I ended up averaging 19 mph on the bike.  That is the fastest I have EVER averaged in a race.  Walked through T2, then started out for my 10k walk.  It was very difficult mentally, but I did walk the entire run.  It was actually easier as I began to encourage others running by, including a teammate completing her first Olympic.  I saw her start and told her that her goal was to catch me and pass me- which she did at mile 5.  At mile four, three of my teammates came back and walked with me to the finish.  I finished in 3:25, which ironically beats my time at Chicago last year (which was horrible due to the five foot waves in the swim).

After the race, I quickly drove home to shower and headed up to the hospital.  My grandma was unresponsive, but I talked to her about the race, and placed the medal in her hand, and she very gradually tightened her grip on it.  She passed away yesterday evening.  I told her that IMWI this year, was all about her.  I will have some additional strength and determination when I train and out on the course that day, that's for sure.

Today is on off day, I need it, I am exhausted.  Tomorrow is a bike day.  I have been swimming with my tri team Wed. and Fri. AMs and with a group on Thurs. AM in open water.  Going for my first 112 mile ride next Saturday...can't wait.

Team.

Had a busy weekend of training. I am currently nursing a slightly sprained ankle but it should be ok in a couple of days.

Great news this morning from my heart specialist. For those of you new to this team, I have a bicuspid aeortic valve (2 flaps not one, most people of 3 flaps on their valves which allows for more efficient blood flow) and have to have images taken of it to ensure that my hears is ok and is not wearing out faster than normal. There has been no change since last year and he told me to keep doing what I am doing Smile. I am healthy and in great shape! I was afraid he may try to shut me down - but I am good to go!

13 days to Muncie 70.3 and then an Olympic in Toronto and then off to NYC.

I hope everyone is well - stay safe and have a great week.

KC

Jenny,

I am so sorry to hear about your Grandma.  She sounds like she was very proud of you and you guys had a special bond.  I am sure she will be looking down on you and helping you cross that finish line on September 9.  My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

A couple weird thoughts from this weekends long run and long ride:

  • My Mom goes to a psychic once every year and went this weekend.  Apparently I will finish the Ironman so I guess I am good to stop training and enjoy the rest of my summerWink.
  • I try to visualize the actual race and different portions of it during all my training sessions.  Kind of weird but I started think about the time that I would like to finish and had this weird thought that I have wanted to do this race for over 20 years now and when I finish this race my finishing time is something that will stick with me for the rest of my life. I will be able to rattle it off down to the second (maybe even 10th of second) to anyone who asks or is forced into listening - haha.  Its like creating a piece of art or writing a song.
  • There is something mentally wrong with a person when a 3-1/2 hour, 62 mile bike seems easy and you want keep on going if you only had more time.

Great work Scott or "Coach"!   When are you thinking of going up to Madison?  I am looking at July 29 and August 19 to get up there and ride two loops.

IceManScott - 2012-06-22 10:59 AM

Busy here.  I did my routine 6 week functional threshold power test and hit numbers higher than ever, even before IM last year.  Something is happening right.

Got my new Shiv out for some rides and they have been awesome.  Windy and hot here and this bike just slices through. I did a 50 mile ride to a state park and back last Sunday at 20 mph plus in a strong wind and rain.  I actually slowed down in a 30 mph zone to avoid a ticket :D

The swimming lessons have been going great.  Lots of comments on how smooth I look in the water now.  People saying, I wish I had your form!  That is the first time in 4 years of training that's happened.  Times seem better.  My time at the sprint tri was faster than usual, I think but hard to tell because wetsuit stripping was counted in the swim time.

Running continues to be good.

Took CPR and passed.  So I'm a certified ITCA triathlon coach now.   So much to learn but I learned a lot from the course. I've trained with power for four years and they focus on HR.  Learning about that.  Reading Friel's book on it now. Really good stuff.  I will put together a training plan for IM Moo with my coach before he retires and tweak it.  I also plan to take on a couple of friends who want to improve and know I can't hit my butt with both hands but are willing to work with me.  I suspect we'll all learn plenty.

Next race is mid July, an Oly.  Then some long fast rides, maybe a trip to Wisconsin to ride the course for fun, then mid September is Branson after I volunteer at the finish line at IM Moo.  It's a great year.

Thanks everyone for the support.

Tim and Scott- August 4th is the TriWisconsin IMWI ride- two full loops including the stick- I will find the details and post on here, they will have different pace groups and a couple rest stops along the way.

KC- Great news from the Dr!

I agree about the longer rides seeming easier- yesterday I felt like I did last year doing a sprint triathlon at the Olympic distance- looking forward to getting back into running and getting ready for Racine to see what I can do when I am actually training for a half!

Thanks again for the support.

Let me know if anyone will be going to the EN training camp at the end of July as I will be there as well.

This is gonna be a busy week for me as I technically start the IM training plan.  Regular workouts until Thursday and then I leave for Italy for 1.5 weeks! Laughing  We're going on a cycling trip with an Italian bike company called Battaglin so next Mon-Sat, I'll be riding through northeastern Italy. Wish me luck!  I'm a little nervous but will have a great time.  I'll try and post pictures while we're out there but I may be offline for the next couple weeks.  I still feel like I have a lot to do before we leave though.

Speed work and swim tonight after work.

I would love to do that EN seminar but I just cannot spend 4 days up in Madison. It has been tough just trying to pick 1-2 Sundays that I can get up there to ride.  Also, did they lower the price?  I could have swore I looked a few weeks ago and it was like $260 or something?

Have fun in Italy - that bike ride sounds great

What an amazing experience, lots of friends and family came out to support me and the atmosphere was fantastic. Definitely up there with one of my greatest achievements. Just a couple of mistakes, I missed out the last buoy in the swim and had to go back to go around it. It was quite choppy and it was a deep water mass start which was quite hair raising with 360 other people! I was worried about being swam over and started at the back but i ended up being the one swimming over others, how scary. One of my friends drove an hour to watch me with her young daughter and I was so excited to see them that I ran the wrong way out of transition after racking my bike, the marshal had to chase me and put me back on track. I basically spent most of the time just grinning and waving and thinking that I can't believe that I am doing a triathlon. I finished half an hour quicker than i thought so a few of my friends turned up after i had finished, but we all ended up in the cafe having a well deserved full english breakfast xxxxxxxxxx The girls have managed to persuade me to do the gower Olympic triathlon on 29th September, so back to training at the weekend xxxxxx all the best and happy training xxxx

So how is everyone feeling as we get into the heart of the season?  The weather has been just absolutely wonderful for training (at least in Chicago) this year and I am really enjoying getting out there.  I found myself thinking today as i close out my "Build" phase of training and head in to my 5 week "Peak" phase that it has not been as hard as I thought it was gonna be.  I did have those two weeks of just complete letdown but overall I am thankful to still feel somewhat fresh and healthy.  The next 5 weeks are going to be very challenging from a time management standpoint trying to get all my 4 and 5+ hour rides in on the weekends.  Might have to do some creative shifting around.

Hope everyone is having a great week and stay cool since it is gonna be hot this weekend starting tomorrow!

Hi Team.

Diane - nice work and way to go.

Bad news here Cry - tendonitis of the right ankle - inside portion. I took off to northern michigan to do some training Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The injury occured late last week while out running. I turned the ankle and knew it might lead to something. It started hurting on Monday after my doctors appointment for my heart. I saw my physio therapist on Monday afternoon and he did some work on it. While I was away it got worse everyday. I tried my long run on Thursday but 20 km turned into 11 km and I knew something was going wrong. Got home last night and spent some serious time with physio this morning. it is taped right now and while he said I could probably bike I have decided to shut it down for the next few days. Muncie half is a week away and I am worried this may linger. I will do all I can to get it back but it sure does suck. I feel completely lost and worried. Have any of you ever had this issue?

I hope everyone else is doing ok. Wish me luck team and I will keep you all posted.

Have a great weekend and if any of you are racing, good luck.

Urgh KC im sorry to hear about your injury. That sucks. I have no experience with this particular injury, so im afraid i cant help you there. I think you're doing the right thing by resting it though. (Can you do deep water running at all to take the pressure off but still 'run').

Hey team, Im sorry i have been MIA recently, im trying to catch up. I feel like i have a lot on my plate right now. I signed up for some summer college classes and holy moly, that combined with work and training, i barely have time to think.

That said, i have my first tri of the season on sunday. Im not expecting too much as i have been too focused on running to bike much, but im just looking at it as a training day now.

Tim, sounds like training is going well. Thats fantastic! Im so jealous of all you guys training for IM this year! Mind you, i might not be saying that this time next year lol

Sorry to hear about your ankle.  Probably a good idea to shut it down and take a few days off.  You really won't lose any fitness and if you you do you will gain it back very quickly.  The rest will be good.  Just keep your swimming up and bike in a few days and you will be good for Muncie.  One thing you can also do is some pool running.  Don't get too stressed out -you will be fine.

Thankyou both xxx sorry to here about your ankle KC, rest is definitely the way to go, go easy on yourself.".......... Sorry I am on the iPad again so it's all one blurb...."....."............ The next tri for me is on 29th September and is quite local too. 1500 seaswim, 22mile bike and 10 km run. But the bike leg of the race is ridiculously hilly and most of the run is along the beach and in the dunes so I need to do lots more training especially on the bike. I just don't seem to be getting any faster"...................does anyone go to spinning class?. A friend mentioned that may increase my average speed? How often would I need to go to improve?............. Take care in the heat over there we are all freezing in the UK, I spent 3 years o the west coast in my 20's and would love the weather to be here! Take it easy xxx

Hi Everyone -

It's been a while since i posted and I guess I don't have a very good excuse.  Anyhow, things have been going pretty well even though i haven't gotten all my training posted to the log.  I have been following the plan for the most part and competed in my first tri (a sprint) two weeks ago.  There was a nice open water swim followed by a hilly 16 mile bike and then a hilly 5k trail run.  I feel like I did pretty well - i just need to remember to untie my shoes before leaving them in transition (they were double knotted!!).

Anyhow, i'm in the midst of a quandry.  I have a perfectly acceptable road bike (2005 Specialized Allez Sport) that has served me well.  I was having shifting issues over the last couple weeks that kept getting worse so I decided to try my hand at adjusting the deraliers and such, but to no avail.  So i ran it over to the bike shop and they confirmed that my shifter is toast - it wasn't my inexperieince in doing repairs.  So given that a shifter (left/front) will cost me around $200 - $300, do I go ahead and invest that much in this bike, or use that $ toward a new bike?  The bike was $600 new 6 years ago...  I had thought a shifter would run <$50!  Thoughts?

Thanks much

Matt

Hi Gang,

Sorry I have been MIA the last few days, so much going on and no end in sight.  Last weekend, I was in Louisville for the iamtri group training weekend.  Was able to swim some in the Ohio river, bike the course and run part of the course.  The weekend was hot and never before have I felt like I was cooking, but it was a good trip.  This weekend we will be camping.

Hope everyone's training is going well.  No way to really avoid the heat, just remember to stay hydrated.

Good luck to KC and anyone else who is racing this weekend.

KC- Sorry to hear about your ankle!  Injuries suck, but listen to what the physio tells you to do...had I been smart and not pushed to run with my hip, I probably would be back at full running by now.  Maybe you can jog for 4 min, walk for 1 min?  This is what I was cleared to do with the hip flexor, and it has been working fairly well.  And in the end, you aren't all that much slower than you normally would run.  Just a thought.  That will be my strategy for Racine 70.3 in two weeks.  Rest up for Muncie!
