I just can't get enough swimming. Now, I need some good weather so I can get consistent riding my bike to work. This is where I get 90% of my biking. I was up at 5:40 staring at the weatherman trying to determine if I could have beaten the rain before I got to work. Turns out I made the right choice as I wouldn't have made it (and I shower 1.5 miles from work). Also, since I blew off the first few days, I consider the end of this week the halfway point. I should be almost on target for the bike/run and way over with the swim. I've been flitting back and forth on the commuting thing. The weather is starting to get nice here in Indiana and I would love the extra time on the bike but I work second shift. So I'd be biking home at midnight. I used to do it when I lived a lot closer to work but now I'm looking at 7 miles in the dark. Not sure how I feel about that. It's mostly suburban streets and I'd certainly wear reflective clothing and have all the appropriate lighthing. But it still makes me feel a smidge uncomfortable. What do you guys think? Would you do it or not? Go with your instincts. Put it this way, if you're asking, there's probably a reason why. Seven miles is a long way. If something happens, like a weirdo in a car drives up.... well, there's no way for you to ditch him and get to safety. Yes, 9999 times out of 10000, there wouldn't be a problem. But it just takes that one psycho.... That said, I used to walk about the streets of NYC at midnight (and after) without a second thought. Now, when I think back on it, I realize that I was fortunate that I never met up with a weirdo or psycho. (Nothing like hindsight.) Is there was some way you could guarantee your safety? For example, do you have a coworker willing to ride with you? Or follow you in a car? If you could find a way to ensure your safety, (or help you in the event of a flat, etc) that would make a big difference. Another alternative could be that you take advantage of the good weather and working 2nd shift by doing riding in the late morning before work.... |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hmm... Emily, I can't really say how I'd feel, being a male, albeit a rather small and averse to confrontation one. The fact that you're raising doubts hints to me that there is probably a reason you haven't already done it. Maybe that's WAY off track, but it's the first thing I though of. I have toyed with the idea of the commute as well. My problems arise from that fact that it would be 15 miles each way. It's only 8 in my car, but that route is certain death by bumper within a week. Not that 15 miles is far for me, but there are no showers where I work, and I do a lot of my training in the afternoon after work. Haven't got my time scheduled right. Maybe when my "main" tri is over and done with I'll give it a go twice a week or something. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning strength session. Now, to go face another (yawn...) day at the office.... If Mother Nature cooperates, I can get Sunday's long run in this evening. Trying to get this week's workouts done M-F this week to free up Saturday and Sunday. Full day planned on Saturday and Sunday a bike (mtn) race. Go Middies! |

It's mostly suburban streets and I'd certainly wear reflective clothing and have all the appropriate lighthing. But it still makes me feel a smidge uncomfortable. What do you guys think? Would you do it or not? I agree with all the advice given above... Really depends on a lot of things: how bike-friendly the roads are, what type of neighborhoods you'll be riding through, etc. I'm glad you have all the lighting. I turn on headlight and tail light flashers even during the day. You can never bring TOO much attention to yourself as a biker. I commute in on a mountain bike in case I hit a patch of road where the shoulder's just a tad too thin...I also don't want to ruin a good pair of road rims... Me, personally...being in a different situation (male, biker-friendly trails next to the road) would probably do it. With that said, I would make sure that you inform someone on the following shift when you're leaving and what road you'll be commuting home on. And as troublesome as you might think it sounds, I would call someone at your destination, or close to your destination and tell them when you left, what route you're taking, and when you plan on arriving. Make a follow-up call to let them know you arrived safely. Well-traveled roads are actually better than isolated roads at night. Better chance that you can expect someone else to be driving down the road in a few minutes. Obviously, make sure you have a cell phone (charged!) and a spare tube and pump/CO2 cartridge. Road ID is also a good idea. I carry my wallet in my commuter bag. Good luck! BTW, this week is National Bike to Work Week. Our company has a 'bike and tri' club and they organized a few meeting points this morning so bikers could bike into work together. It was a lot of fun, and a great way to get new bikers comfortable with bike commuting... Edited by sparco 2008-05-15 8:47 AM |

![]() | ![]() I dodged the rain this morning and rode my bike. I even stopped midway and pounded out 2 miles of running for my first brick So, here I am at work, halfway through my morning coffee with gray sky's surrounding. As far as the midnight commute, I imagine it would be an incredible ride, but I wouldn't be able to do it. Last month, I went for a night-time ride at 10pm and I rode a loop using low-traffic 4-lane blvd streets in a neighborhood. I ended up cutting my ride short as my mind was too filled about what bad could happen. I couldn't get out of my head how many high school/college kids might be on the streets (and remembering when I was in high school/college). Let's keep it up middlers, we're half-way there!

I did get a run in on my dinner break tonight. It's still raining so I was stuck on the treadmill. On the plus side, I did get to watch a Seinfeld re-run! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I... now get ready for this, because it sounds so exciting you might just pass out.... do asset quality review for a community bank. Basically, that is risk management. As in finding loans with potential loss, checking trends in capital ratios, and monitoring the loan portfolio diversification. Fun stuff like that I get to play in some sweeeeeet spreadsheets every quarter end, too. One data file that links to eight other files and generates reports automatically. And I built the entire thing! NERDS!! |
