Congrats Chip. You must be so proud!  (and happy that she got a scholarship)

Well St. Anthony's is only about 10 days away and we get this email...

---------------------------------------------------------

WATER TEMPERATURE (PLEASE READ): Current water temperature is in the mid 70's so be prepared for the possibility of a non-wetsuit swim.  Several factors can affect water temperature including wind and weather over the next 10 days.  We have been wetsuit legal for the past 6-7 years but there is a very good possibility that the water temperature could get to or above 78 degrees.  WETSUITS: 68 Degrees is the cut off for professionals, 78 degrees is the cut off for participants if they want to be eligible for awards.  NOTE: If the water temperature is above 78 degrees but below 82 degrees, athletes will have the option to wear wetsuits but they will not be eligible for age group awards.  Additionally, you will be required to start in the final wave(s) that will be designated as THE WETSUIT WAVE(S).  If you chose to wear a wetsuit in water above 78 degrees, you MUST start in the wetsuit wave or you will be disqualified.   There will be NO AWARDS for the wetsuit wave.  We will make announcements on Friday and Saturday at the EXPO with current water temperature readings.  A final water temperature reading will be made early race morning and we will be making announcements over the PA race morning with the final ruling on water temperature and wetsuits.  Be prepared for both wetsuit and non-wetsuit swim

---------------------------------------------------------

There is NO way I'm waiting until 10AM (my wave is at 7:15) to wear a wetsuit.  So send down some of that northern cold..

Drury? Congrats to your daughter!

Dude, water at 78 degrees? Unimaginable up here, so I'll do my best to blow cold weather your way, but we're expecting 70* temps this weekend, not too much help!

I think the cutoff for wetsuits around my way is 72 degrees, not sure the water temperature ever reaches 78 degrees.  The lake I live on is still too cold to swim in even with a wetsuit.

I did my first two tris last year without a wetsuit because I didn't own one, if I can do it, I  know you can.

Hey Ken,

What's the status of our group?  Is everyone still in?  Are we still a group?

Having to post workouts helps keep me accountable, so I'd like to keep it going if everyone else is in.  My training is about to pick up and I'm going to need the motivation.

I'll keep this going as long as everyone else wants too!  Maybe even longer! It wouldn't be the first time I have been accused of talking to myself!!!

But the archived threads will stay available for a long time, if not forever.

Of course there is always the inspires to help as well!!!

I need some help making a decision.  I just found out today that there is a duathlon next Sunday right in Grand Rapids.  Its a 5k, 30k, 5k format.  I haven't trained specifically for this at all but I have been training and the distances don't seem that bad.  Do you think its a good/bad idea to sign up for this?  I don't know why but I am sort of torn between wanting to do it and being a little hesitant due to the short time frame.

Only you Craig can make the decision.  For me, I would decide based on my confidence in the 5k run after the bike.  Your training log looks solid so if you can do the brick, I'd say give it a try.

In my opinion, you have the base to do the race.  If the thought of racing it concerns you, take it as a suppported training day.  Get a comfortable pace in your mind for the first 5K and stick to it, same with the bike.  Watch your heart rate and try to stay within the Z2, maybe low Z3 and don't let the other racers affect your pacing.  Then for the final 5K, push it up a notch! Not to the I can't walk tomorrow pace, but on the edge of uncomfortable.

Early unplanned races are a great time to work on transitions, pacing, plus getting the legs used to switching sports.  Just have to be careful not to blow up on the first run or early in the bike.  The problem most people have with this is the adrenaline of being in a race over comes common sense and strategy.

Good luck!!!

I would say, if you want to use it as a training opportunity-go for it!!! Specifically because if you're thinking you're not ready to race then it might not be a good idea to push your body just yet...seems like this group has finally had all the injuries clear up for the most part, let's not get new ones from the race season!

I agree, do it Craig, not as an A or B race but an event to learn about pacing and racing setup/transition. Stay in moment and enjoy the day. I wish we had more duathlons but there are only a few a year. Sure would be logistically easier to setup with no worries about the swim.

We had a sunny/windy day Sunday for Day 2 of MS150. We started at La Grange county courthouse around 8:15. They said 85% of riders registered started the ride. We passed the fairgrounds where we would have camped out the first night, most of tents were still up but you could see a lot of water in there. We had headwinds all the way, worse than last year....much like most of training rides I had so it was fitting I guess. Glad I remembered how to fix a flat. As good will safety ambassadors, ride marshals provide assistance to riders. #1 problem of course are flat tires. One of those riders I assisted actually rode Saturday from Houston to La Grange in the heavy rain...now that's just silly. I changed six flats and stopped to help slow down bike traffic when a rider came down a hill too fast in a crosswind and lost control. The ambulance was there quickly. I can only hope he faired well. Crossed the finish line in Austin at 4:15. Our team tent had plenty of food and a cold Shiner Bock keg waiting for us. Hit the shower trucks and home by 9:30 pm, usually a 3 hr drive but traffic was slow and go with everyone coming back to Houston. A nap helped pass the time. Big thanks to my wife for her support this weekend; she made it a very nice event for me. Hope everyone had a good weekend and got in some training.

Sounds like an epic ride!  The kind you will remember for years to come!  I am surprised that 85% still showed for the 2nd day! Must be a bunch of hard core riders you hang out with Wayne!

Well I decided to sign up for the duathlon on Sunday.  I figure worse case scenario it will be good training but I think I have been training enough to do ok at this.  I am just going to try to take the first 5k easy then pick it up a bit on the bike and see what I have left for the last run.  Thanks for the encouragement.

Good call!!  I'm going to suggest that you take it seriously enough that you don't stay out too late the night before drinking too much wine.  (Just a thought, you do what you want...)  Have a great time and don't take it too seriously.  The race itself isn't nearly as important as the training for the race.
