BamaDC - 2010-08-19 11:25 AM I think everyone goes out to fast the first mile.

Yeah, I tried to reign it in and figured I averaged out to be on pace after mile two so that was OK.  I'm just a little frustrated that I keep slipping after that.

BamaDC - 2010-08-18 2:30 PM Anyone else racing this weekend?  I've got a little local reverse tri.  Too bad I can't take the foot off the gas and taper a bit.  I'm feeling so underprepared for my Oly next week.

Nothing this weekend, although I'm throwing around the idea of riding in the Hot Hundred out of Tuscaloosa, and doing the 40 mile option.

I'm feeling very underprepared for the Oly next week.  I know I'm slow, but I'm feeling like I'm not even going to be able to keep up.  I've been really down on my run lately, I just don't seem to be improving at all, even though I"m trying to increase my mileage and consistancy.  At this point, the 6.2 mile run at the end of the OLY just doesn't sound like fun.

Where are you staying the night before Rocketman?

We just made a reservation at the Westin for Saturday night.  We may visit the Space and Rocket Center on Saturday before checkin.

Started out WAY too fast.  My pace as 6:30-6:45 at some points.

Hey - that sounds familiar.   I do that crap all the time (including the tri last weekend where I started out at 6:30 pace).

You guys are fast!!!

Anyone can be fast for a short period of time.  If you look at my average pace for each mile it's very unimpressive...

They went something like this:

Mile 1: 6:55/mile,
Mile 2: 7:32,
Mile 3: 7:50,
Mile 4: 8:15,

well, you get the point.

And that looks mighty familiar, too.

So I was a little bored today during a telcon...

I plotted up my pace for my last four running races ( Marathon, 10k in April, a 10 miler, and last night's 10k) which are attached.  The marathon pacing was good (because I ran with a pace group) until I blew up at the 20 mile mark.  The 10k I did in April ("Clyde's 10k", the green line) was a great race.  I paced very well and pushed myself during the last 1.5 miles.  The 10-miler was good race.  That's one I did back in June before my Tri.  I paced pretty well in this.  It's an out and back course with a lot of hills (mostly downhill for the first 1.5-2 miles and then up hill at the finish).  Aside from some difference in those sections I think I paced very well.  There is slight trend upward in the middle but no real big deal.  (The slope of that line works out to be just under 5% overall and less then 1% slowdown per mile).  The 10k from last night (the red line), however, is a real disaster.  My pace dropped about 25% overall and I was loosing speed about 3-5% per mile.

I'm not sure what this means.  But one thing is for certain, my telecon was REALLY boring!

I'm really thinking about skipping tomorrows race.  I've been having some exercise related chest pains.  We're pretty sure its asthma related.  But it sucks, the past 1.5 weeks my heart rate has been 10-15 bpm higher for certain wattages.

Whenever it gets in the 155 bpm range is when it starts to hurt.  Suckage!

That does suck!  I would definitely bag it.  It's one thing to try to race with a foot, shoulder, etc that's not 100% but I your heart and lungs not being 100% is a totally different story.

Thoughts?  I'm still thinking of this.....is it worth it to build up a bike (this would be my first, and I'm not very technically inclined), or is the experience worth it?

I might go by the bike shop this afternoon and get measured on a P1 to see if a 54 would work.

I'm bagging it.

I've got a case of bronchititis.  I had a case early last year, but no where near a painful.

One thing about my doc is he'll write a scrip. for any thing.  He then ask if I've got any other problems, which I reply "I haven't won my AG in any of my races."  "I think some EPO will take care of that!"  Well he'll write a scrip for almost anything.

Hope you recover quickly! Now that you have some spare time this weekend Wink help me decide on a wheel set. Here's where I'm at now, Zipp 404 with PT hub and a disc cover, and a HED 3 up front. Whole deal for under $2500. Is this over kill?

I can go with the HED Belium with PT and disc cover and save about $600, but thats not a carbon wheel. Think it matters?

That sounds like a good deal.  But you'll rip open the universe by riding one Zipp wheel and one HED wheel.

It literally may cause some folks to have heart palpitations! I think I've reconsidred again. Now i think I'm gonna go with the 808 on the back. Think thats to deep for a training wheel?

No, its the front wheel that usually causes the problems.  But its an expensive training wheel.

Sorry to hear Mark! Take care of it and get well soon.

Funny Story sorta regarding this morning's run.

Mixed up the beginning location and part of the running party was almost 2mi away getting ready to start. Finally we got it worked out and managed to start. But, we moved the start, which affected the distance to our first water stop.

On a 7mi run, we ran up on the water stop at 1.5mi. Took it, but it wasn't necessary.

The route was in the sun. It's one of the typcial winter runs that goes through downtown and parallels the Mercedes Marathon course. Now we know why it's a winter run. You want the sun then to stay warm. Now, not so much. We cooked!

We came up on the second water stop (~mi 5) and realized it had been hijacked. Cups were there, bottle was gone. Ok... and the gas station across the street was closed. What gas station is closed at 8am on a Sat morning?

Somehow, while transferring the directions from the map to my hand, i wrote R instead of L at 10th Ave. After about 1/2mi, we noticed the street numbers were going the wrong way. Yep, we just went almost 1.5mi out of the way... go me... (luckily we made positive direction on most of it)

Got oriented correctly and started heading back. Wandered into a gas station for water, only to realize I stepped in gum and was tracking it all of the store floor. Owner wasn't happy.

We finally made it home, but it wasn't pretty, we all felt like crap, and i'm still feeling run over. YIKES.

On another note.

Remember my "training wheel" question? I scored a new rim from the LBS for $60, a 10speed 105 cassette for $35 online, and got it all put together today. Total out the door w/ rim, cassette, tape, tire, & tube - $107. I'll take it.

And I found out the LBS rents HED tri spoke wheels...

I piked up my new wheels and powertap yesterday.  I went with Velocity Deep V and the pro+.  I got them hand built by a local guy that does nothing but build wheels.  I was going to get the elite+ but he cut me a deal on the pro+.  I took everything out for quick spin at the shop then went for a long ride in the evening.  I'm pretty happy with everything.  The rims are rock solid.  I doubt it has as much to do with the new rims as the fact that they're hand built.   I had a decent ride (I stayed out too late on Friday night so I was dragging butt all day), 2 hrs, 37 miles, 222 avg watts.  I'm playing a trial version of WKO+.  I calculated a normalize power of 261 but I haven't entered a FTP.  Any idea how it's comping up with that?

NP is a pretty complex calculation.  In a nut shell it starts taking averages of Power Output in 30 second intervals.  And it calculates a power your "body" could attain if you pedaled smoothly for the entire ride.

You can actually get a close estimate of your FTP over 3-4 hard rides.

If you don't enter an FTP does WKO+ try to estimate it based on whatever ride data you have?  I was playing around with it this evening and it looks like it tried to do the same thing for HR.  I never entered any zones but it has them listed for me.

I think so.  I'm guilty of not loadig all my data into WKO.  I think the last time I turned on that computer was just after Disney 70.3

cornfed - 2010-08-22 10:24 AM I piked up my new wheels and powertap yesterday.

NP isn't that bad.  Take those 30 second averages and then take each to the 4thpower and add them.  Then take that to the 1/4th power and divide through by # of 30 second intervals.

Having looked at a couple programs I like Golden Cheetah better than WKO.  Take  a few hard rides and it will calculate a critical power for you (which tends to be close to FTP).

Can you track running with golden cheetah?  I'm still playing around with WKO but the ability to track running (and others sports) seems to be a nice feature.  I read "Training and Racing with a Power Meter" before buying my powertap because I wanted to really understand what it could do for me.  There is a chapter about using the Performance Manager in WKO.  I skipped it at the time but am rereading it now.  Seems like it could be a very useful tool especially if you can coming all the different sports in there.
