I highly suggest Cranberry Olympic in Lakeville MA. A lot of BTers do it, and its a fun race. The course is flat and really pretty. The swim is in a smaller lake and a little murky but the rest of the course makes up for it. The race is in August and put on by Sun Multisport. Check it oout.

hmmm - interesting, right neat Taunton. Most of my wife's family is from there. I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

As for my first race? Right now it's looking to be the mini's that start in June. I'm doing a 5k in May and an off-road bike race next weekend. Same venue as the off-road mini series, winding trails in farmington, ct.

I am not a fish - I just swim like it.

Here is what we did this morning.  Felt kinda slow in the water today.  Just didn't have the normal snap.  The fourth 200 was my best time at 4:03.  I've been feeling slow in the water but still turning in some personal good times.  Something is getting better about my swim but I can't quite figure out what it is.  If I knew what it was, I'd do more of it.  When I figure it out, I'll share.

RTB Masters Swim Workout (2500)
WU: 5x100Easy
DR: 10x25 as 25 Catch, 25 Count
MS: { 1x200 Mod, 2x100 UpTempo, 50 Alt } 4x

Focused on Kicking with toes streamline, ankles turned in slightly, brushing toes.  Varying 2,4,6 Count. Kick Flutter, Kick hard.

The Cranberry OLY looks great! I'm seriously considering it. The only issue might be the timing Aug 28th. My son is going off to college and i'm thinking that could be a move in day. Trying to find that out. Otherwise, i think i'd definitely be in. I think there are a few CT BTers that hit that one up.

Wow thi group has gotten chatty!

I signed up for 3 races this summer- first one is mid June. I may add two more at a later date. I am back training after a difficult bout with a sinus infection. I am working this month on increasing my running speed- was surprised at how slow I have become over the winter.

Terry- besure to send bike pics!

Leslie

Mornin' group! Hope everyone has a great day of training (or resting). I'm going to make my first real attempt to get a pool pass this morning. It's really time to start swimming again.

Well, yesterday, I did what I never thought possible, I ran 4 miles, and it only took me 50:02 minutes.  I was quite pleased with my strides particularly at the end.  I felt them lengthening.  Unfortunately, by the time I got home, I could hardly walk.  My right trochanteric bursa has been inflamed in the past, and I got a steroid/local anesthetic injection about a month ago.  I immediately iced it, and it feels much better this a.m.  My right lower calf remains tight today.  I have decided to swim today in lieu of more running.  Any suggestions on stretching exercises I could do before my run?

Congrats on the long run Lori!! I've struggled with running induced injuries over the past 3 years. I'm convinced it's because i have bad form. I've done a lot of reading and the one thing that seems to be consistent is the recommendation to have a shorter, quicker stride as oppposed to a longer, slower stride. Every once in a while i feel like i'm running with good form and it feels easy. My goal it to stretch that feeling out for the entirety of a run I highly recommend a book called "Born to Run" by Chris McDougall. It's insightful and a very entertaining book to read.

Also, when i've been injured, rather than continuing to run i've substituted yoga. It's great not only for increasing flexibility, but also for increasing core strength which leads to better posture and a more balanced all around physiology. It's also a great way to work on your mental focus.

@Lori - Way to go on the long run. 4 miles is a big deal.  Write about it, shout about it. dance about it, ok maybe just ice it and get a massage.

I found that if I self massage the calf using a foam roll I was able to consistantly improve the calf until it is no longer a problem.  Your previous injury may make your calf muscle prone to forming adhesions.  Those tendons and muscle fibers may need a lot of TLC.  I have incorporated foam rolling into my daily stretching and pay extra attention to the calf before race weekend and the entire week after a race.  Everytime I get off the bike I give a quick massage to the calf area pulling the fibers back in line.  Think Long fibers.  Say not in my legs to short cris-cross anger fibers.

didn't make the swim, bike, run. But big BUT, I did my swim lesson and my instructor convinced me to stay for the Masters Swim (how intimidating) I did half of it. I still felt way slow.

Swim- 60m, for 1600m

Bike- 45m for 8.59m, Legs were dead.

Going to try the run later this eve, and maybe a Yoga class to stretch.

??? does Yoga count towards the challenge???

@Terry - Stay with the masters swim, it is the best thing you can do for your swimming.  Don't feel too intimidated about bonking halfway thru.  Remember you just finished a full swim workout and then added the masters swim as a bonus.  Thats tough to do.

Terry, I couldnt agree more with Mark. Stick with Masters. It will improve your technique, speed and endurance. Swimming with others really does help push you. A good Masters coach is worth their weight in gold.

SO glad to see everyone training and posting!!!!!!

Bob...a HUGE congrats on the pool pass...hope you can make swimming 3x/week as part of the 3 for April challenge!!!!!Laughing

Leslie, glad you are feeling better and back to training.

Lori, YEAH for 4 miles!!!!! It is a HUGE accomplishment. I also agree with Mark on this one...get a roller and roll those calves, hamstrings and quads after running. It wont feel great while you are doing it, but your muscles will thank you after. Get "the stick" or "muscle track" roller. The other thing that I have found immensely helpful is my orthotics. I have custom orthotics and they are pricey but you can use the Dr Scholl fitter at the local pharmacy. They cost about $50 and add a great deal of stability to your gait. My podiatrist is an ultra runner and he swears by them. I never leave home without mine. I really felt a huge difference in my overall soreness when I started using orthotics. I also would advise yoga. I have not used the DVD Flex warrior, but I have heard great reviews and you can pop it in at home and do it in your free time.

On a personal note... I will be absent quite a bit over the next month. My Mom is having open heart surgery next Fri and when she leaves the hospital she will be staying with me while she recovers. I will do my best to check in regularly. I want to see race reports!!!! Thats my favorite part of BT.

I will be on the start line ( side line) of the Boston Marathon. I live 10 miles from the start. Its the highlight of spring for me. Who wants to run with me next year?????

First outdoor ride of the season!!! Cut short as it was still a bit chilly for me but it was nice to be riding with changing scenery and the wind. Tried out my new aerobars. A little tricky getting used to especially with the roads still covered in salt/rocks/ aand grime from winter as well as the huge potholes that appeared over the winter. May need to plan a new route until road maintenance kicks in.

Mav- hope everything goes well with your mom. You certainly have had a lot on your plate.

Thanks for all the positive comments.  Mav, I hope the surgery goes well for your Mom.  I ran to work last night.  It was 4.1 miles.  I did walk an uphill section.  It felt really great.  Swimming today and tomorrow and then a brick on Sunday afternoon.
