I got a damn cold! Managed an hour at the pool this morning...planned on a 45 minute run too but decided to shut it down for the day. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be feeling a little better. Taking more drugs now...

Happy weekend to all!

Fred Doucette - 2011-04-30 7:52 AM

I am on-call starting now until Monday am. It can be really busy or sometimes fairly quiet. I occassionally get a treadmill run in at the hospital, but not much formal is planned.

I had a good April for training. This week I was feeling pretty burned out, but I am hoping that it will be temporary and May will have some better weather. I also have my first race coming up in late May, an Olympic in Baltimore.

Have a great day!

Fred, sorry, maybe I missed this, but what kind of medicine do you practice?  DH is an ER physician.

Also, when you say burned out, do you mean physically tired, or mentally tired of training (or both?).  Curious because I rarely feel physically burned out, I tend to hit mental barriers well before that.  And for me taking a day off doesn't really help the mental burnout...it just makes me angsty.  Just curious, as the mental side of training and racing is not covered as exhaustively as other topics (IMO).

Fred, I hold specialty degrees in both Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine.  I have been working as a Hospitalist since 2002.  I am also Assistant Program Director for our Internal Medicine Residency Program affiliated with Michigan State University.

You?

Yup, my school's teams have room for improvement too.  I do love teaching and have been doing so ever since graduating medical school.  Now if I could only do this tri stuff as well as I believe I do medicine.......  Well off to pick up my P3 (finally) and also my new Harley Fat Bob (IM+new tri bike+new motorcycle = textbook mid-life crisis, but its a good problem to have)

Got the weekend off with a bang by doing the tri sports in reverse order this morning.  I found it kind of cool doing a workout like that.  I suspect it's probably a good thing to mix up the muscle memory a bit with this technique.

I also want to comment that all the swimming I've been doing this weekend really makes me feel more efficient in the water.  In addition, my times are improving with the same effort level.  My initial thought was that as the week went on, I would become more sluggish in the pool by swimming every day.  Turns out it seems like the opposite effect for me.  One thing for sure is that this week is making me more confident and satisfied with my ability in the water.   And obviously that is always a good thing.

Hope everyone has some solid workouts this fine weekend!

Burned out from the weather, work and training hours.

It's actually a normal thing for me at this point in the season as I have been putting in the hours but no races or nice weather to enjoy it more.

After I asked you this I realized the lack of racing probably is a big part of it for me...I'm happiest with events coming up.

And since you're an OB at a teaching hospital, I'll share a couple of tidbits from my past...I had HELLP with my daughter at 34 weeks, a ruptured ectopic (lost the tube and a lot of blood on that one), and my "successful" pregnancy that lasted until 37 weeks when BP's went labile...only had to stay one extra night for crazy post partum BP spikes after my son was born.  I swear if I ever got pregnant again, I would probably just spontaneously combust.  Needless to say I really, really like OB's.  Lifesavers.

Sorry for the buzzkill, let's get back to the fun stuff...I'm off to take a picture of my bike...swam 3000 this morning and looking at an hour run in 65 and sunshine this afternoon!  Cheers.

Had a great ride and T run today (70mi/4mi).

Tried the torpedo style mount between the bars for the first time (just using an AL cage with zip ties) and loved it.  I was drinking regularly every 10 minutes, but wasn't drinking enough (just a swig each time) during the first 1.5 hours of the ride.  I finished only about 1.5 bottles during that time, but finished about 3 bottles during the last 2 hours.  Though I had a good ride and run, I was really dehydrated afterwards as my HR wouldn't come down and my pulse was weak.  When I got home I got on the scale and realized I dropped from 157 to 151.2.  That's after I had my protein shake...which is about 2 pounds.

So just trying to rehydrate a bit and get a few more calories in me.

2 hour bike, 50 minute run for me today. Followed that up with tons of yard work.

Tomorrow: 90 minute bike, 90 minute run.

The head cold is still hangin on...

I have a bike question.. I define running 'harder' as running faster, running hills or running longer.

If I use the same definitions for biking, how should I bike faster - by increasing cadence and spinning faster or by increasing my gear to pedal 'harder', or is it a combination of the two until I run out of gears?  (which isn't likely to happen for me unless on downhills).  I feel best at a cadence of 85 - 90; if I increase much over 95 I feel like I'm just spinning and don't see the benefit to this.

Pedal harder or longer.

You can pedal harder in the same gear, by upping your cadence.  Or you can shift into a harder gear and use the same (or lower) cadence.  Hills will generally force you to work harder, so those are always good too.

Minor disaster for me today.  Headed out for my long ride+run.  Planned to ride 5hrs and the weather was chilly, but promised to be a beautiful day.

Less than 10min into my ride I ripped the derailleur off my frame--along with piece of said frame.  The P2C is now trashed.  Took my PT wheel out of true as well--need to get that to a shop and see if they can fix it easily or whether it requires another complete rebuild (just had one done a few months ago after a lost battle with a pothole in my last tri last year).  It's my own dumb fault as I put a new 11-28 cassette on the bike yesterday and knew I shouldn't cross-chain with big-big combo given the derailleur I have.  I rarely ever do that anyway, but it happens once in awhile and it's not something I ever think much about I now (belatedly) realize.  Did it on a short riser and that was all she wrote...

I've got my Soloist that I can get ride-ready (it's not set to go immediately).  But I am now frustrated and pissed at myself (yeah, self pity, I know).  And demotivated at the moment.  Not sure what, if anything, I will do today now.  Right now, I can't even think about racing in 2 weeks.

I'm sure I'll dust myself off and get back at things.  Hopefully, quickly.  Hope everyone has a better day than mine so far!

46 mile bike followed by 5.2 mile run.  Good brick for today.

Used the new P3.  Felt solid and compact however I've decided not use it for my race in Texas.  I just picked the bike up yesterday.  Was hoping for it to be ready over 3 weeks ago, and now there just isn't enough time.

I did not like the feel of the saddle after the first 25 miles.  Other than that the bike great except my legs felt different (more tired) than when I ride the P2.  Neck soreness did not occur and even though it was a windy day I felt much more aerodynamic going into headwinds as evidence by my speed and RPE (someday will get a power meter).  The shifting was smooth and hill climbing was very good.  Given I only have 2 weeks before I have to get my bike boxed and ready to ship to Texas, I have decided to stick with the P2 for this race, and start working the P3 when I get back.  I know the cables will like stretch a bit as well and I don't want to change things up just before this race.

John, sorry to her about you bike.

Kelly, congrats on your race!!!

Yikes Johnny - this would easily fall into the "major" disaster column for me. Luckily you have a back-up in the stable to keep you riding while it's getting fixed. Good luck!
