Had a great bike last night! 15 miles at about a 20mph pace. Felt great!

Swimming this morning feeling better. It is all starting to feel alot better. Definitely more confident then when I started 3 1/2 weeks ago!

Cheers everyone!

20mph!  Wow that's fast bro!  What kinda bike is it again?  I can't remember if you said it was a CF (carbon fiber) frame.  Do you happen to know how much it weighs? =)

~Roland

It is a Trek 5200 Carbon, about 12 or so years old. Picked it up for $100 from a lawyer who already had another newer better bike. A sweet deal! Not sure how much it weighs but it is a hell of lot lighter then my 10 yr old mountain bike!

Sounds like a great bike man! Can't be the price at all... I'm actually jealous...

Thanks Scott.  Speaking of bike's just bought a new Trek Speed Concept 7.2.  Going for a 3 hour custom fitting on it tomorrow, can't wait to try it on for size!

Good for you! Having a bike fit is definitely a great idea.  You spend the most time on this, it's a good idea to get the most power you can and be comfortable as well.

New here, and to any tri community.  Scott invited me to join, and I'm always a fan of group inspiration.  I posted a thread about my background in the introduce yourself section.  Look forward getting to know you all.  Brief history:

2010: Did a mini-man, and then a Sprint in 1:29.  Doing the same sprint on June 5, another Sprint in August, and Oly in Sept. and a 70.3 in October.

In January 2010, I had never run a mile in my life (late 30s) so this is all new, and I got into Tris looking for a sport to enjoy and help me stay healthy and less fat.

Welcome bro!  ^_^

Did 34.3 miles in 1:58. 17.4/mile and 139/bpm. First and last quarter were fairly flat. The middle half hilly as all hell. My quads were still fatigued so all in all it was a solid workout but overall I'm just unhappy about it. I spent most of the first three-quarters being gun-shy and paranoid. I wasn't digging in on the gradual downhill grades like I had been and I was constantly coming out of the aero-position. I actually climbed really well. I'm sure it'll pass but considering I have over 1400 skydives, have done bungy jumping, hang-gliding, scuba......I'm not used to being apprehensive.

Scott - yes, I think I'll save up for the 310xt, probably buy it at the end of summer and continue to surf the net for deals.  Everything I've read so far makes it sound real positive.  I would probably only wear it in the water for a tri, but thought the feature was good.  Got my polar back and it is nice to have my watch back instead of using my daughters since I understand mine better.

Had a nice easy 3.5 mile run and the sun even showed up.  That's different from lately.  I feel like I am constantly putting on the breaks to keep my heart rate down.  My average hr was 170 and that felt pretty slow.  I plan to do a 5 mile run on Friday and then on Sunday retest my hr zones.  Since I went off the propanolol about 3 months ago my hr is totally different.  Before on it I was be maxing out at 158 and now I feel easy at 168.  I used it to control my migraines but it is also a blood pressure med so that probably explains the difference.  Anyway, definitely time to retest so I am training where I should be.

Bikes - I am thinking on trying out my husbands bike which is really light (carbon).  My hybrid is pretty heavy.  He will adjust it so it fits me and the pedals are compatable with my shoes.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Thor - man I would love to see 20 mph average on a bike.  You must be just flying.  I bet it feels great!!!

* Numb toes,  one possible solution *

Hello everyone!  Thought I'd share a toes getting numb solution for those long bike rides (>45 minutes) with my new CF bike.  My left foot big toe area would get numb to the point to near discomfort after about 45 minutes of intense cycling.  Numbness would always go away in a few minutes after removing the bike shoes.  I attribute this to possibly pedal mashing downward during the hills portion in my route.  Today I tested a couple helpful tips from web experts:

  • Loosen front straps
  • Pedal pulling back as if scraping something off bottom of shoe on bottom stroke
  • Push forward on pedal stroke on up stroke (you shouldn't be jamming your toes if you got correctly fitting shoes)
  • Wiggle toes from time to time

Before this I adjusted my seat height and cleat position which did not help.

Anyhow, my right foot never had a problem so I experimented by tightening the front straps and they felt a little numb!  Not as bad as my left but it started getting there.  By wiggling my toes when could, it didn't get worse.  =)

@Scott, I'm still considering the eSoles solution but I'd like to experiment with this pedaling technique more so it feels natural.  I found myself having to think about it to ensure I pedal that way.

Nice ride there and average pace with those hills!  I think your mind is still getting over your accident man.  I understand how you're feeling.  I still get a little nervous in the deep lanes at the pool from time to time myself as I nearly drowned when I was a little boy.  But hey!  You're back on the bike and I'm in the pool doing laps!  We rock!  ^_^

First day in the new lane. Led the middle 700 + pull. That's my upper range but I did pretty well. Not gassed after that and fell right back in drafting on the faster sets and felt fine.

Last night, went to endurance spin class. 26.2 miles/75 minutes. Felt good. Different instructor, the music still sucked!

Did a slightly shorter swim this morning as they were late opening the rec center. I still find my arms are burning after a 4 lengths but after that they seem to be okay once I get into a groove. Just straight swimming today.

I picked up a sponsor(okay my dad is retired and sells honey)I found a new company that makes tri wear...they will custom design suit. Not sure of the quality but we will see. Tried to upload image but apparently I am computer challenged...

Thor - nice suit!  I got my wetsuit yesterday and I look like a vinyl covered apple....not flattering to me in the least, but I can hardly wait to get in the water and try it out.  What water temp is a good temp to start at?  I was thinking if the water temp is above 55 degrees on Memorial Day I'd hop in the lake and try it out.

Jen - what have you heard about the N. Mankato tri course.  I thought it was flat but now I've heard there is a big hill on the bike (tought going up but great fun coming down).  If that's true I need to adjust my bike training.  I'm going to my b-in-law's cabin for M. Day and thought I'd detour and drive the bike course on the way.  I can take pictures and post them if you haven't been to the course before.

Seeing all this recent talk about wetsuits and bikes I thought I'd ask if anyone is using a customized saddle on their bikes vs the stock one.  I clicked on Koobi sponsor link and I saw some interesting types.  Has anyone in our group upgraded?  I currently ride about 2-3 hours per week based on my training schedule.  Also, my stock saddle might be causing my numb toes problem so I thought of another solution.

Anyway, I was thinking of purchasing AU Enduro/PRS Enduro from Koobi but if anyone has other recommendations, please let me know.  My cycling volume will most likely double after my race in September into the following year.

Did a brick this morning. 12.1 on the bike and 3.1 on the run. Bike course was very hilly and I pushed it for an 18.6/mile and 150/BPM. Run was much more conservative at 9:04/mile and 149/BPM. My legs were the tightest they've ever been at the start of a run during a brick. My gluts felt like I had done heavy squats. Not particularly surprising considering the workouts this week.

What was interesting was I did 9:34, 9:05 and 8:50 on the three miles and my heart rate was exactly the same for an average on all three miles. The course is a light rolling course so my max was only 159. There is really zero different per mile for ascents. I've never had the sensation of my legs loosening up and coming alive to that degree. The first half mile I was tempted to turn around and call it a day. After mile three I was tempted to turn it into a 6 mile run.

I didn't feel disconcerted on the bike like Wednesday. Riding with my partner probably helped. Felt really smooth and fluid on the climbs getting a very good feel on the pull part of the stroke.

I have a stock San Marco Trilon. It's pretty inexpensive but I like it.

My wetsuit is a 2XU team TO which is their base model. I like it a lot but be advised they are super tight so the first few times that can be disconcerting. I certainly wouldn't go from box to competition. You have to wear it a few times.

Not sure how cold it is where you live but around here I really cannot race without one. You can rent them for an event if you're unsure or get a used one on ebay for cheap money.

Well seeing he lives in Canada, I would imagine that the water is going to be very chilly... I would definitely suggest looking into renting a wetsuit. Remember BT has a discount with exterra wetsuits. You can get a great wetsuit for around $150
