Extreme Veteran 494 Olympia, WA | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread So the Boston Marathon is sending out messages to registrants (I'm registered but couldn't go, which is how I wound up with St. George) encouraging them not to run if they have potential issues with running in the heat or are not acclimated to it. They are also offering deferrals to next year's race for those who choose not to start. The expected high on race day is 87. From what I've read, the average high on May 5 in St. George is 86. Hmm. Anyway, I thought it was extraordinary to get the message from BAA (part of it is below) actually recommending that people don't run. Somehow, I don't think St. George will be sending us messages like this for temps of 87. Of course, Boston is supposed to have some decent humidity to go with the heat. I'm not saying the Boston folks are wimps or anything like that because it's good to take precautions. I just find the difference in the two events interesting. ----------------------- We are now making the recommendation that if you are not highly fit or if you have any underlying medical conditions (for example-cardiac disease, pulmonary disease or any of a number of medical problems), you should NOT run this race. Inexperienced marathoners should not run. Those who have only trained in a cooler climate and who may not be acclimated (for at least the last 10 days) to warm weather running conditions should also consider not running.

Interesting. Looks more like a major CYA. St George was in the mid 90's last year and those red rocks made it feel like a furnace. It will be interesting to see how many people defer till next year and how it impacts those trying to register after they qualify. |

I think you're right about the CYA, but I do appreciate that they are letting people know this could be a problem if they're not ready for it. Their letter also included some language basically saying this won't be a day when you will PR so don't be stupid and run yourself into the ground. I expect the number of deferments will be quite low. The reaction on various forums has been people are running no matter what because who knows what next year will bring. In addition, BAA says people can only defer if they pick up their race materials at registration, but don't start the race. That means the people will have already made the trip and all of the expenses that entails. Maybe not a big deal for people who live close, but for people like me who would have to fly across the country, there would be no way I'd just go home without running. There won't be any PRs set that day, but that's life when we do these outdoor sports that rely on the weather. Brad |

Extreme Veteran 483 San Diego | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George : Official Thread I'm in Boston. As you might expect, all of the talk around here is about the weather. Some of the local people without qualifiers for next year are deferring. No way I'm bailing. I've traveled a long way and it's my 4th in a row, so hopefully I'll make it through and keep my little streak alive. I figure it's the last long run before St. George - might as well throw in some heat training along with it. Will just run by feel, carry a bottle and try to take it easy and enjoy the ride. The temps don't sound any worse than what we've had at CDA, Honu and Louisville. At least it makes the morning gear decisions a little less challenging. Less clothes, more sunscreen. Can't wait! |
