Great news on passing the exam -- congrats!

I put in an order for Flo wheels also (60 up front and 90 in the rear as recommended).  Haven't found out what # I am yet though my cc was charged.  Hoping I get it before Rev3 in June but at a minimum prior to Lake Placid.  I'm also eyeing a new bike purchase for this year to go with the new wheels (like you at least I will look fast as I get passed on the bike haha).

Today was going to be a semi long run day but woke up to a surprise 4" snowfall last night so I may be stuck on the treadmill.  Pool might be closed tonight too so I may have to hop back up on the trainer.  Really hate missing my Friday swim though...

I'll be curious to see how shipping order plays out, too... Luckily for me, my "A" race isn't until August, so I think I should be in good shape. It would be nice to have them earlier in the season, though. I just ordered a 60 front. I have a powertap wheel + disc cover on the back. I've spent a ridiculous amount of money on gear for the upcoming season (aero helmet, new wet suit, power tap, disc cover, new saddle, and now front race wheel - yikes...).... I think I'm done now, though.

Congrats on passing the exam and getting your wheels.

I had a hectic week. My transmission on my SUV went and had to be replaced. In the meantime I had to have friends shuffle me and my boys back and forth for a few days whenver my hubby wasn't available. Missed my bike class since my bike rack is on my car.

Tomorrow, I have my 1 hour swim training. It's swimming NONSTOP training day. Then follow with an 8 to 9 mile run.
From there I have to rush to my older son's playoff basketball game and then to my younger son basketball game.
Later in the afternoon is nap, nap and more napping!!

Congrats on passing...sounds like you're moving forward.

I'm bummed on two fronts...my right shoulder is killing me. It;s been bothering me on and off for a couple of weeks and I had just chalked it up to finally getting back into a regular swimming routine, but this week it's killing me.  It's feels like something isn't moving right in the rotator cup and I have a shooting pain/cramping down my bicep.  Ugh!  Even running on the treadmill this morning hurt.  I did get in a little brick (30 minutes on stationary bike and 30 minutes on treadmill)  Funny...I so used to just getting up at 5 and dressed and out the door, it wasn't until I pulled my car out that it saw it was snowing!!  I wasn't even sure the gym would be open, but it was and it was empty for once!  Has anyone else done the espresso bikes ...they have computer monitors that simulate an actual ride.  It was fun except I found the bike itself very uncomfortable..set is more like a touring bike and you're on your sit-bone a lot.

On the second front--I've officially gained 5 pounds since xmas!! I'm so mad at myself!  I got to get this nutrition part down I'm so sick of working off the weight during the season to gain it all back and start again.  I am still 10 lbs lighter than last year, but I just want to be done with the yo-yoing. I carry most of my weight in my belly and I hate it!  I loaded the Lose-it app back on my phone to try and see where I'm going wrong!

My vent for the week...weekend looks like skiing tomorrow (if I can still move my arm/shoulder) and a 6-8 mile run on Sunday.  I can't believe it was almost 60 on Thursday and now we've got snow....

I guess I am lucky compared to a few of you in that we have gale force winds...but no snow.

This has been an interesting week training wise.  I taught last Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and this morning.  So I've been very active in the gym though it wasn't all exactly "tri specific" training.

I've got my half mary tomorrow.  I'm not holding out for anything spectatular.  I haven't really been running as much as I should have been, my foot and my hips are sore, and I have a feeling it's going to be cold.

I have an opportunity to pick up a third program at the gym.  It's a core program, and while I think I would enjoy teaching it, I think I have officially turned the corner where I want to be outside training for my tri's instead of inside the gym training with other people.  Don't get me wrong, I love my second job...but race season is coming and though you wouldn't know it by my training logs, I am fired up as ever to go start racing.

Thanks for all the motivation guys...reading what you all are up to helps me stay focused on what I need to be doing.

Good morning! Guess who's sick again? I'm so frustrated.

I swam yesterday morning, and I was hoping for a run, but I decided not to push it.

I'm not going to try to swim or run today, but since I'm up, I think I'll try a short trainer ride.

Congrats on passing your exam, Jenny! I'm sorry to hear about your injury. Have fun with your 12 miler tomorrow, Chris. I'm jealous. :-(

Oh no! Get well!

jsnowash - 2012-02-22 3:42 PM Thanks, Chris! Completed and sent off my final exam today... should have results by tomorrow. Wish me luck! Next week I'll begin the triathlon coaching cert!
You don't need luck, I'm sure you did great. And you are already off to the next certification? Wow, you don't let any grass grow under your feet, huh?
Passed! Yes - on to the next certification.... I got a late start to all this -- gotta catch up!! The tri coaching cert is the one I REALLY want, anyway, but thought the PT course would be good background info. What's everybody up to these days? I seem to have somehow strained my anterior tibialis and that has had me side-lined a bit for the past several days, which is a bummer, because I was supposed to be starting official IM training.... It's the strangest thing -- I've never really had pain in this area before, and this is pretty intense at times. It seems to be getting better, but I think I really need to take a few days completely off of biking and running to help it resolve. So I guess I'll hit the pool today, I may try some aqua jogging in addition to the swim and see how that feels. My birthday was a few days ago, and I got my present yesterday -- I got in on the first order of Flo race wheels! My present won't arrive at my door for another few months, though.... but I'm looking forward to racing on them. At least I'll LOOK fast! Anybody have anything exciting on tap this weekend?
Awesome deal on passing, CONGRATULATIONS! And congrats on the wheels, they really do seem to be all the buzz here. Take care of the leg, a little rest now will pay off big time down the road. I have a long run, 12 miles, on Saturday morning with my sister. Sunday is a group ride, probably about 30 miles. I may ride over to the meetup area, which is an additional 15 miles, there and back. I sorely need a weekend like this to hopefully break me out of the funk I'm in. I skipped my morning run today and have been eating like a horse lately. I gotta stop the downward spiral before it really gets a head of steam going. Enjoy the weekend everyone

Wow! Busy, busy! That looks like a good training weekend!

Add me to the sick/injured list. Nothing major, just an ear infection and sinus infection. Started some antibiotics today so I should be up and at 'em again by next week. I gave myself permission to skip today's workout. maybe tomorrow's too. Then again, I missed one this week already, so maybe I better get on the trainer tomorrow.

I hope everyone's weekends are/were good.

Officially diagnosed with rotator cup tendonitis!  But the doctor is very encouraging and says I shouldn't have to give up swimming, but just don't push through the pain.  Figure I'll be doing a lot of kickboard drills and easy 30 minute swims for the next month while I figure out how to fit 2-3 PT sessions a week into my schedule.  I was relieved that it wasn't anything more serious plus he said there's no arthritis or calcification in my shoulder (my mother's side has a history of server arthritis!)

So..on the flip side the dr. appt.  took a lot out of my day-off and I was hoping to get a ride outside today (it's 50 here in CT with some ugly weather heading up this week).  2 hour trainer ride tonight..whoo hoo...anybody recommend a good movie?  Watched Hangover 2 last week.  Thinking about Warrior...looks very Rocky-esque, might inspire me.

Other good news to report...since it's been such a crudy winter..I only have to work the mountain one more weekend...I can finally get some training time on the weekends!

Good luck with your PT - the easy swims are a good idea. This might be a good time to focus on form-related drills, too. It could be that there's something in your stroke that's putting strain on your shoulder. Here are some good pointers:

http://www.swimsmooth.com/injury.php

I know that I have a tendency toward issue #2 discussed in the link above, especially on my right side, and when I get sloppy and my form starts to go, I can feel some strain in that shoulder.

Working the opposing muscle groups might help some, too. Swimming (and biking and running) consists of a lot of repetitive motion working one group of muscles in the same way, while the opposing muscles just come along for the ride. Working those opposing muscles can help correct any imbalances that might have developed over time and help stabilize the joint. I'm sure your PT will be giving you some exercises to help strengthen your shoulder(s), but for you or anyone else interested, here are a few articles on shoulder exercises for swimmers.

Thanks for the links...I think I also might succumb to the thumb first...have to pay attention in my next swim. Not sure I'm going to swim anymore this week.  My first PT session is on Friday and I did what I considered an easy 1500m swim thia am and my shoulder is killing me!  Even though the doctor said swimmings OK as long as i"m not in pain (which I"m not..the swim itself feels OK) , I think I'll wait to talk to the PT...I don't want this to get any worse!

Highly recommend the movie Warrior...forget triathlon -- MMA is just insane, but it's a very inspriational movie and made a 2 hour ride (actually 2:14..long movie) very easy!!

Well, my muscle strain seems to have resolved, and I'm mostly back up to speed, but I'll probably continue to keep the run volume a little lower for the next week of two. I "officially" began IM training this week, and think I have settled on a general training schedule:

Mon - Run/Bike
Tues - Swim/Bike
Weds - Run
Thurs - Run/Bike
Fri - Swim/Run
Sat - Bike
Sun - Swim/Run

Had a great swim this morning - the best I've felt in the water in a while. Not sure why, exactly, but I'll take it!

Hello All, how is everyone doing?

Jenny,
I have come back to this and re-read it a few times and the same thing hits me. No full rest day. I don't think I could do that, wow. I am currently doing 5 runs and two bikes with no swimming. I double up at least one day (sometimes 2) and get a rest day or two. You're doing 5 runs, 4 rides and 3 swims. Color me impressed! I have a few questions, just for my curiosity:
1) Have you done this type of program before?
2) Are Weds and Sat long days?
3) Do you factor in an occasional rest day?
4) Are certain days more "technique" or "form" focused while others are more volume or intensity focused?
5) When/where is your IM?

Thanks

Hello All, how is everyone doing?

Jenny,
I have come back to this and re-read it a few times and the same thing hits me. No full rest day. I don't think I could do that, wow. I am currently doing 5 runs and two bikes with no swimming. I double up at least one day (sometimes 2) and get a rest day or two. You're doing 5 runs, 4 rides and 3 swims. Color me impressed! I have a few questions, just for my curiosity:
1) Have you done this type of program before?

Yes, more or less... Not this exact schedule, but I typically do something pretty much every day, and 2 sessions several days/week. I've been running 5-6 days/week for the most part for a long time - maybe 2 years? Plus bike and swim training... But I have been tri training for almost a decade now, so my fitness has built to the point where I can handle that schedule, at least at the moment I can. As the season progresses and training sessions get longer, I may need to reassess....

2) Are Weds and Sat long days?

Yes, but they're not terribly long at the moment....

3) Do you factor in an occasional rest day?

I haven't included scheduled rest days, but will certainly take a day off if/when I recognize that fatigue is building. I also realize that there will be times when life demands get in the way and no training will happen... I won't sweat a missed workout or day of training here or there. I also do my best to try and help myself recover by getting enough sleep, and trying to eat well (including post-workout meals or snacks to help with recovery). For most of my two-a-day training days I try to allow myself some time between workouts to recover. And most of what I am doing now is not especially long and fairly low intensity, so the training stress is not really all that high.

4) Are certain days more "technique" or "form" focused while others are more volume or intensity focused?

I do some technique or form focused swim training, but don't really work specifically on form or technique for bike and run. My goal for swimming is to have 1 day form focus, 1 day speed focus, and 1 day distance focus, but for now I'm just building my swim endurance back up after a long time of inconsistent (at best) swim training... Running is almost all very easy right now, with maybe 1 or 2 days per week where I will mix in some tempo work. Biking is actually sort of the opposite - most days on the bike are fairly high intensity, with one day more endurance focused, but I seem to recover fairly quickly from higher intensity bike training.

5) When/where is your IM?

IM NYC, August 11.

Jenny, thanks, that is pretty interesting. I only have about a year under my belt and am just starting to get comfortable with each discipline. It is interesting to hear what a week looks like to someone who has more time in. Also, thanks on the swim articles you've posted, there was some good help in there. I should be back in the pool in a couple of weeks, so I'll review it again and try to put it to good use.

Thanks again, and have a great day.

Good morning all! How's it going? My first week of "official" IM training is going pretty well so far, I'm glad to say. Swim & run on tap today.... My husband & 2 of our kids headed off to Vermont for a weekend of skiing last night. I'm home with our middle child, who is in the school play this afternoon. I think this will be the winter of no skiing for me The weather has been so mild here this winter skiing has not really been on my mind much....

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Jenny -- I'm glad your IM training is going well so far.

I did a 45 minute trainer ride last night and this morning. I ran for the first time in a week this afternoon and followed that with a swim session with my 11 year old. So far, so good.

I've also decided to quit part of my job -- I have been part time faculty/part time administration for the past five years. Of course that really ends up being full time faculty/full time administration. I just can't take it anymore. I think the stress is one reason I've been sick off and on for the last two months. I'm going to go back to full-time teaching in the fall. My boss is trying to talk me out of it, but I'm going to try to remain firm. I'll miss the money, but I need to stay healthy.

Chris -- thanks for the messages to everyone. I needed a kick to get back into the group. Since I haven't been training much this week, I didn't feel being on the site much.

Even though I didn't get a work out in last week due to demands of family and work, I was still able to get my long run in.

I did a long, slow 9.2 miles of the actual course of my Iron Girl Half Marathon. Its a benefit to live so close to a race.
I felt a little sore so I took double time stretching. Afterwards I had an 8 HOUR hair appointment and surprisingly, my body took the time to rest and I have no stiffness or soreness.

This week, I will be re-doing my workouy schedule so I can keep on track.

Good luck with the job change. Any time you can reduce the stress in your life is a good thing! I hope it all works out for you.

Good job on that long run! Glad you were able to recover well. I think I would go insane if I had to sit through an 8 hour hair appointment!!!

Good job on the run -- you are my hero if you can sit through an eight hour hair appointment. I start getting antsy after about 30 minutes.
