cathyd - 2012-01-30 10:50 AM Hi darren and all the group. I'm just going to ramble a bit to try to catch up with the vibe of the group. The past year of my life (the past 3 years actually) has been focused on a very sweet little girl who sadly passed away on Jan 11 of this year after being ill for the past 8 months. My triathlon life came to a screeching halt last May when we got the diagnosis. At the time I was registered and training for a HIM. We did go up to the race site where we stayed at a cottage for a week and Peyton went with us for a couple hours to watch the race - she said "Grandma look at all the people running" and she clapped for them as they came into the finish chute. It was a bit sad for me to be spectating at the race but I had also suffered a periformis injury in june so couldn't have done the race anyway. Spent 2 months going the chiro twice weekly for active release treatment and do prescribed stretches daily. Fast forward to this month - ran a couple times without pain earlier, last week ran 30 mins and the next day felt the tightness in my hip and tingling in my foot that tells me I need to take it slow building my running back up. So I'm going to do only 20 - 30 min runs for now. Also we are having problems with our internet at home and need a new modem but can't get to thce to pick ot up until thurs so I'm using my phone which won't format paragraphs properly on BT. Hope to stay more active in the group once we get our computer back online. Cathy

Cathy - it sounds like you have been through hell and I'm incredibly sorry for your loss.  I pray that just getting out there will take away some of the pain and bring you some much needed peace.

I think it's a good bet to take it easy for awhile.  I would also spend some time each day not only doing your stretches but also taking time to ice it down (I've got an ice pack on my knee as I type this).  Aqua jogging might help.  I've been doing it for 2 months now and it's allowed me to gain some strength and ease back into running.

I'm looking forward to supporting you as you make your way back into the swing of things...

Thanks everyone for your kind words.  Our memorial service for Peyton was on sunday and it helped everyone - one thing she would not want is for people to sit around feeling sad.  She was a happy little girl who loved to run and play and we did a lot of that together.  She taught a lot of adults that life is short so you better get out there and enjoy it.  That is what allows me now to be able to focus and start doing what I love again which is in order of enjoyment for me - run, swim, bike.

I'm working a night shift so went to the pool before work (Monday night) and will try to wake up early enough  to get in a short run before work tomorrow night although that may not happen.  I used to run with a coworker in the mornings after we worked nights but she moved away last summer... I need to find another running buddy.

I'm a little concerned. I just finished my first week of HIM training. I have been following a plan but change some days up(based on the weather) to run/ride outside. I had a long run and long swim yesterday. Today was day 1 of week 2. Again weather and work based I changes my schedule. I went at 5 to swim again today and it was a mess. I couldn't get going. I couldn't loosen up. I barely could make through my sets.

I am a little concerned that if I can't make it through these workouts I am really going to struggle when they really get long.

I know I need a recovery day and don't want to make a habit out of swimming and running 2 days in a row, but i should be able it get through it.

Any advice?

I'm glad to hear that you aren't experiencing any pain that would point to an injury.  From your note - it sounds like you lead a pretty busy life and that might lend itself to your feeling tired.  I would also imagine that you are ramping up the miliage and that too might cause you to feel tired.

I totally understand your concern about your ability to keep up - considering that you probably have 4-5 months of training ahead of you its natural to have doubts when you are getting tired at the very beginning.  But the goal is to get to the start line - so my advice is to take it easy for a couple of days and see if you feel better if you aren't spending as much time in the pool and the gym.  I hope it helps!

Fight the fight - finish the race - keep the faith!

And remember, a training program is hard stuff. If you do it to your greatest potential you are sore and tired and cranky for a good 4-6 weeks at least. Your body is constantly in a state of being broken down. Even when the taper starts you normally don't start feeling good until a 2 or 3 days before the race. That is not to say that you have to go so hard. But, remember, lots of people get through it and it makes the race much more enjoyable in the end.

so, have to brag about my 18 miler yesterday. It was awesome.

I also think I have figured out my, um, GI issues on the run. Turns out I can't eat break or oatmeal in the morning before a run, even if the run is 2-3 hours down the road. I can't believe it has taken me so long to accept this. Now to find things I can eat for breakfast.

Just got back in from a run in the rain.  Two complete strangers started cheering for me as I ran by.  It was great motivation

In other news, I got a promotion at work.  I'm now going to be working part time most likely 4 days a week so I get more time off with the puppy and more time to train I'm pretty excited.  I've been doing a lot of training at work for it and should be starting the new position at work late next week!

O Captain my Captain - congrats on the run yesterday.  As you already know - there is nothing better than a great run!  Bummer about the oatmeal!  I asked my kids what their favorite breakfast food was - My 10 year old recommends a sesame bagel or butternut donut from Dunkin Donuts and my 11 year old perfers a chocolate muffin or croissant  - ahh to be a kid again.

Hope you woke up today recharged and ready to go.  When I was younger, I was never aware of how my lack of sleep was affecting me.  Now that I'm 40 - I have begun to realize that its one of the most important determinants of my mood.  Last night I got 6 1/2 and I feel like crap.

It's good to diagnose these things.  Your right, the hard part is finding what works for you.  I do wheat toast with butter and srawberry spread.  I do Powerbar gels during run.  I don't particularly car for the gels, but the combo of toast before and gel during fuels me well, and I don't seem to have issues.

Congrats on the 18.  I won't be there for many moons.  Keep it up Daren.

Well, Things are well.  I got 5 hours sleep Monday night on two beers for hockey night.  This is a small victory for me.  When I woke up, I'd only gained .2.  I had a rest day for training, followed by work and grad school from 6-9 at night.  I only got 5 more hours last night as I went to bed too late and woke up to a 4:40 swim and sprint training.

I swam well.  I did my long swim.  How's that go Darren, "slow is fast?".  I swam a mile in 37:30, and continued and did 2000yds in 45:30.  This is 2:16/100.  That's awesome for me as I just started swimming and was one of those sink before you get to the end of the pool guys.  I still have a long way to go, but I'm heading in the right direction.  I have a better attitude about the pool since I started doing sprint workouts a couple of weeks ago.

I finished off with a sprint 8 workout on the suspension trainer.  I don't know if this is of any benefit as of yet, but I'll see in a few months if my mile times get faster.

I woke up this at 188.9 this morning, but it's great to see that my highs do not go over 190 anymore.  My goal is to be 186 at weeks end.

I'm enjoying training, I'm sore as hell, but starting to see some results in my times, and that's encouraging.

Thanks for posting all your stories, everyone is so unique, I enjoy reading all your successes.  Hope everyone has a great finish to their weeks.

Got in a long swim Monday.  Was supposed to be 3200, but could only manage 2600:

300
3x100 choice
Main Set:
4x200 with :30 rest
8x100 with :15 rest
200 kick
6x100 with :10 rest (skipped this part)
200 Cool down

Tuesday I started running... boy am I sore.  Did a 30 minute walk/run (ran 8 minutes) for a total of just over 2 miles.  I didn't stretch afterwards which I knew I should have, so now I'm sore.

Today got in another swim and fixed the bike!  Apparently I popped my own tire trying to put air in it.
Warm Up:
300
6x50 on :15 rest
   Build up by 3's
Main Set
5x100 on :10 rest
   Keep stroke long
4x50 Kick on :20 rest
200 Cool Down

Won't be trying the bodyrock thing this month, especially since I'm so sore from just jogging for 8 minutes!  Maybe some other time.

Kevin:  I don't know what is more impressive - youre swim times, your early morning workouts, your continuing weight loss or the fact that you only had two beers on Tuesday...  I'd have to say the barley pops!  Keep it up brother - all that work is beginning to pay off.  When you get to the start finish line, you are gonna feel so confident knowing how far you have come and how much improvement you have made.

Melinda:  Pretty soon you're gonna be cranking out running workouts like the ones you do in the pool (which still blow me away - could ONLY manage 2600... I hit 900 for the first time this morning).  The tough part is that running takes a much bigger toll on your body than the swimming does and you need to take it slow and take steps to prevent those aches.  To make sure you get in that stretch - you could stretch after your warmup but before your run begins.  Think about putting ice on those sore spots (as a CC coach - I actually had my kids take ice baths at least once a week to try to give them some relief).  Keep it up - you're off to a good start!

Great to see everyone`s training taking shape!

-Love the short work week, I need to win a lottery to shorten my work week to my liking!

-Mindy-great job as usual on the swimming! The run will eventually get easier...kind of...

-Kevin, you are kicking but in your workouts/weightloss!

-Darren, I have a great T-shirt that relates to your breakfast issue..."Beer, more then just a breakfast drink!"

-Katie, get your butt out there and start training! :-)

-Cathy, sorry for your loss. I feel your pain. I have twin boys, one passed away 5 years ago. It makes you realize how trivial some of our concerns in life are.

Finally, I am off to LA tomorrow to do my half marathon on Sunday. First one ever. I am shooting for  1:59.99 or better! A couple free beers at the end will also help with motivation as I have read they have run out in the past. Over 20,000 people running, that is crazy!

Fly back Wednesday.
