I spend so much time on the road that I don't have much choice about the hotel pools. Gotta make the best so a mediocre situation.

Steven.davis - 2012-04-11 5:12 PM Only a risk if you have more skill and technique than me! Doing a full one hour workout in the pool tonight if it empties out in time. Hope to get in 2000+ yards.

More power to ya!! I know i couldn't swim in that size of a pool for an hour.

On a side note, my run times and distances are getting better and longer.  Earlier this week I ran 7.6 miles in a little over an hour and felt great afterwards and the next day!  As much as I dislike running, I'm finding that it's becoming therapeutic and somewhat relaxing.

Love the new cap!

:-) Thanks!  I don't ever swim with a cap, never have in 30 years, but the open water swim group I joined said I had to have a colorful colored swim cap so I thought that one would do!  My daughter loves it so much she wants to use it daily, lol.

Finished my longest swim set to date. Only 2000 yards total for the workout, but one set of 105 yards without a rest. My goal for the month was a 1000 yard set, so I will try to hit 1250 before the end of the month.

My first brick workout today. 25 mile hilly bike ride followed by 2.75 mile run.

Congrats.  I must be a glutton for punishment, but I really like brick workouts.  The first half mile or so of the run feels a little awkward, but I usually have my fastest runs during brick workouts.

Well, it looks like my experiment with Zoot Ultra Otecs has failed.  I'd wanted a pair of Zoots for a while, and found some on sale a couple of weeks ago.  They feel awesome when I'm wearing them, but my right foot hurts like crazy about an hour after the run.  I guess there's not enough padding in the heel for my stride.  Too bad... back to the Brooks, I suppose.

I agree. That first 1/2 mile felt like my legs were dead. Then I settled in a bit, but it definitely is a different feeling. I think I need to run a little more often.

I've got a pair of Brooks that are extremely comfortable but I've been thinking about trying the Zoot's.  Thanks for testing my theory out :-)...... I think i'll stay with my Brooks!

Kind of an odd training week for me.  Swam/ran Monday morning, Tues off due to work, Wednesday skipped swimming but got a long run in, Thursday 35mile bike ride, Friday early morning swim, Tomorrow 45mile bike ride in the hills and then Sunday a 68 mile bike ride in the hills(8000ft climbing).  The week felt a little off because I'm so used to my Tues/Thurs/Sat AM spin classes but outside is so much better than in a humid, stinky room with 30 other people!!

Hope everything is going good for everyone.  Steven - How are you liking the bike?

It takes a little getting used to, but I am enjoying what little I get to ride it.  I've been traveling a lot, and the past week was a recovery week in the training plan, so only two rides.  I'm battling a case of Plantar Fasciitis that is impacting my running.  First time I've been "injured" in two years.  Guess that's what I get for trying to make one pair of shoes last a lot longer than they should have, especially during marathon training.

Swam my first 1500 yard set without a rest today. Other than sharing the pool wall lane with another swimmer, and feeling like I was constantly being pushed into the wall, it was a great workout.

That's one thing in all my years of competetive swimming I never got used to....swimming next to the wall! I always disliked it.

I didn't do much this weekend except ride my bike, rode 46 yesterday and 65 today with somewhere around 7000ft of climbing......I'm tired!

Six mile run this morning in my newest shoes... back to Asics.  I'm having problems with Plantar Fasciitis for the first time ever, and one of the most common recommendations is shoes with more cushioning or inserts.  No pain after my run this morning, so that's a good sign.  Back into heavy training this week, with two-a-day workouts.    I've got a 3 day trip starting tomorrow, so there will be a fair amount of juggling.

Yes, two weeks. Other than transitions and open water swimming, I think I am going to do ok. I have an open water swim scheduled for Sunday, so that should help.

I haven't done an open water swim yet, but everything I've read says the most important things is to not panic. I guess it gets pretty disorienting with everyone splashing around you. I've read advice that says start near the back or toward the outside and take your time. Transitions are all about planning and organization, from my limited duathlon experience. Lay your gear outin a way that makes it easily accessible and simple to put on. Think through every step for the time you step out of the water or unclip from the bike, all the way to the transition line. Organization and planning.

Hey everyone, just a quick Public Service Announcement: Make sure that you take care of your bike maintenance Every time you ride. Specifically your cleaning up after the ride to remove sweat and grime and salt.   I just replaced a stem that had a hairline crack in it that was made worse by sweat deposits (basically ate away at the carbon fiber), but that isn't the worst of it,as my bike mechanic was putting it together he noticed it doesn't turn very well, I told him I had no idea what he was talking about. He took apart the headset and discovered "Massive" corrosion in the headset. I have now been without the bike for over a week and a simple repair has turned into a costly one.

I know you are tired after your rides, but a quick water only rinse if you can't muster the energy to completely clean your bike. At the minimum you need to clean your bike thoroughly at least weekly.

Great reminder. I admit to being less disciplined (lazy) about bike maintenance than I used to be. I'm always embarrassed when I take the bike to the shop for anything... It looks awful.

Steven, good thoughts about transitions.  That is why I say it is goodpractice your transitions in your driveway as you are setting up a mini race.  I also believe that minimal is better. The less I have out in transition the better and cleaner my transition area is and the quicker I can get out to my next segment of the race. As for the OWS, I think that starting in the back or on the outside is okay, but if you are a somewhat capable swimmer, you will force yourself to have to pass more people in the water. Most people are a little more capable than they think of themselves.  One tip here is if you can not get out to do an OWS with some friends then practice in the pool with one or two other swimmers in the same lane. It gives you the crowded feeling.

Great point. I should have mentioned the practice. I also try to get to the venue early enough to rack the bike and set up the transition area, then walk it through once or twice. I've gone so far as to put on the helmet, shoes, and shades and pull the bike off the rack. One other tip I've followed is to put the helmet on first and take it off last. This avoids the temptation to put it on enroute to the mount line. If you fumble it, you're trying to pick up your helmet while everyone else pushes around you. May be overkill, but I'm pretty paranoid about looking stupid in public...
