Paul, Vero and Brenda I finally had an opportunity last night to catch up and read your race reports. Thanks for posting those up there I enjoy reading those. I'm not sure if I missed any others but if I did please let me know. This is such an active group it is so hard to keep up.

Tracy glad to hear you are feeling better and sorry to hear your husband is now sick. I hope he is feeling better.

Vero also glad to hear that the ankle is doing better and hope you are able to get back out running soon.

Hope everyone has a great day today. Train hard and be safe.

This work is a good starter for some hill work on the treadmill.  You can modify if you think you want to increase the distances or elevation percentage.

 1 Mile

 1%
 3/4 Mile 2%
 1/2 Mile 3%
 1/2 Mile 4%
 1/2 Mile 3%
 3/4 Mile 2%
 1 Mile 1%

You can also mix up the hills and do different elevations and lengths that will be a more specific approach to what your likely to experience on the trail run itself. Running at longer hill intervals will help you adapt in a controlled environment.  But nothing is going to get you truly prepared for trail running  except trail running.

 1 Mile 2%
 1 Mile 5%
 1/2 Mile 2%
 1/2 Mile 8%
 1/2 Mile 2%
 1 Mile 5%
 1/2 Mile 2%
 1/2 Mile 8%
 1/2 Mile 2%

The treadmill will help you with the climbing but the descending will also need the workouts too.  Trail running navigation needs to be learned as well.  With your outdoor and trail experience you have an advantage but walking and running on the trails will probably be pretty different.

Thanks for this.  There is no downhill running at this race!  It is completely up, up, up!  I have a couple trails I can run on for my weekend long runs.  I'm going to try to hit them when I recover from all my coughing.

Wow, that's quite a route.  I know the local trail runners around here speak in hushed tones of the Mt. Washington run, and the one you're tackling has 1,000 more feet of vertical!  I'll ask some friends who do Mt. Washington if they have any "secrets" for prepping for such a nasty event.  Good luck.

I'm supposed to do my long aerobic swim today but my head is still completely stuffed.  I have slight vertigo going on, too.  I can barely hear out of my right ear.  I think it would be wise to skip the swim today and continue to work on a blanket that I'm crocheting.  My toddler is pretty content to sit and watch Mickey Mouse on this dreary, drizzly day, too.

Tracy, I like your plan for leaving your 30s with a bang.  It sounds like you have a good plan of attack for your race.

Brenda, thanks for thinking of me.  I have decided that I am not going to do an April race Frown.  I hate to abandon my New Year's resolution of one race a month, but I think it would be a really bad idea with how my knee is doing at this time.  I have a race the first weekend of May in Hawaii, and I want to save everything I can for that day.  I am hoping that I can hold onto my running fitness until then, but without many runs lately I am not sure what is going to happen.

I took 3 days of training off completely.  Today I rode a stationary bike for just under an hour (with no pain) and then followed Jeff's advice to do a short test jog on an incline.  I went for 5 min at a very slow pace and varied the incline from 5-7%.  It wasn't exactly comfortable, but the pain was much less than it has been.  The pain is usually not bad during my run- it's after that it worsens.  We'll see how things feel as the day progresses.

I started looking for my ranking last night for USAT but couldn't find it.  I'll check a little later when I have a little more time.

http://membership.usatriathlon.org/RNK_Ranking_Report_Wrapper.aspx

The rankings are pretty cool in theory.  Your score is on a scale of 1-100 (or 0-100?) and it represents your percentile rank.  100 = 100th percentile or a performance that in theory is the best amateur triathlete in America.  So 80 = 80% of the best amateur in the world.  And this theoretically equates to being just 20% slower in that race as the best person would have been.

But due to the magic of statistics and historical data available to USAT, the weather on that day and the difficulty of the course and any distance is all taken in to account.

Good day for me today!

About a month ago, I had done a specific bike route (with minimal traffic) at a local state park, to establish a baseline and so I could do the route at a later date and compare my times (hopefully see improvements!)  So like a TT-type thing.  Well, I did that route again today (12.4 miles) and I made a few minutes of improvement so I was quite happy!  Although, I did forget my cycling shoes which was not so happy, but that was okay.

Then following the bike ride, I headed over to the metro park by bike (which connects to the state park) to run the 8.2 mile loop around the lake.

I am quite happy to have gone out and done my bike and run that I planned!  The weather was pretty ideal today too, so that was a major plus.

A few minutes on a 12.4 mile course is significant improvement.  Great job and keep at it.  I love doing a set TT to track progress, as well as learning how to really push correctly for the distance.

Great job Samantha! That's a big improvement and you still followed it with a run!

I have a regular route I do as a TT too. It's nice to see the improvement from month to month and week to week.

Hope everyone else is doing well!

Way to go, Samantha! Bike improvement and weather cooperation equals happiness for you!

Allison - HAWAII?!? Oh, I'm SO jealous. I'd forgo an April race also to get to race there. Is this a business or pleasure trip? What kind of race did you find to do there? Are Ryan and the kids going too? My oh my....that sounds plain wonderful! I'm sorry you aren't meeting your New Years resolution but sometimes wisdom needs to prevail and you're smart to let it go with your knee. To answer your question, yes, my son got his license and also the BigMac and large Fries he wanted.

Tracy - I love that you made a 5600' climb your last hurrah of your 30s. That's just too cool. GET WELL though, along with Karl.

What a lovely day we've had here in Indiana. The hubs and I took our boat out on the lake for the first time this year and enjoyed some fishing and relaxing conversation. Didn't catch any thing but had a nice time any ways.

It's a business trip, but we are going a couple of days early to enjoy it as a vacation.  Ryan is going with me, but he will just be there for a few days (he has 2 business trips surrounding this one).  The kids will be staying with grandma   The race is actually put on by the American Association of Orthodontists as a part of our meeting.  I've been looking forward to it for a long time, as I haven't really done much other than local races before.

Congrats to your son on his license!

Great to see everyone working sooo hard!

Tomorrow is going to be a rest day.

Friday is the day. Weather forcast is 70 degrees in Tahoe and close to 80 degrees over the mountain in Nevada. Big day Friday. Group ride ride planned and we are attacking the race course for my planned century. They told me "This will be b@lls out!" Oh, as a side note, this ride will take me over 1,000 Miles! Only 2500 more to go.

Anyway, I will let you all know how it went on Saturday. I am honored to part of this group. I couldn't ask for a better group of friends.

On friday the 13th my father passed away in his sleep. Diagnosed with stage 4 inoperable colon cancer he was was given a life sentence. He fought hard, we made the most of each day and did the best we could. In the last few days he was so weak and was clearly ready to go. My brother and I were there for my mom on that afternoon and we sat at a restaurant and all spoke about the relief that we felt. An odd feeling but my fathers suffering and pain had ended. We will miss him terribly but I know that he would want us to carry on. So we will.

The donations received for my ride to conquer cancer has hit a high that I couldnt fathom when I signed up. Over $9000.  I need to put some SERIOUS time in the saddle now.
