On tap for the weekend:

Dinner with cycling club tonight.  Mexican is great before an early a.m. ride!

Sat: 30 mile ride with my Mello Velo's for CARTI's Tour de Rock followed by a wedding

Sun: Taking the SeeDoos to the lake then home for kidlet's baseball practice.

Never a dull moment around these parts.

Gee ... I had no idea anyone paid attention to what my avatar was unless it was one of the bikini ones! Sweet!

But more importantly ...

GOOD LUCK to Felicia (KansasMom) in her first race of the season!

Anyone else racing this weekend? Not so far from the sounds of the plans, but say so if so!

Yes, I think everyone is so different when it comes to the nutrition topic that it is VERY important to experiment with this at every opportunity you get.

When it comes to RACE NUTRITION, absolutely true. I'll touch on what's already been said and maybe add some of my own stuff.

For the most part, I pay zero attention to the articles on Active.com. Two of my friends work for them, and they agree (scary!) Some of it is a decent starting point for a beginner. Most of it is just fluff, with a fair bit either flat-out wrong, outdated, or second-rate (the best evidence indicates something different, although what was written isn't actually incorrect).

Race hydration/nutrition is SO dependent on your gender, weight, body composition, fitness history/experience/level, specific race and conditions, tolerances/preferences ... as to be almost useless to recommend any blanket starting point, never mind actual plan. You have to arrive at this through personal trial and error.

My own experience and what I've read in the good literature as well as those far more experienced than I:

1) Take any information/research published, sponsored, or funded by any sports or nutrition entity with a handful of salt.
2) In that vein, people almost always need less than what's recommended by them (their objective is to push product).
3) The longer I train (meaning over years), the less I need.

My personal opinion is that, insofar as possible (because people have different tolerances), train like a crocodile. Why? Because (especially the longer the race) it's easier to eat/drink what's offered on course. Races, especially triathlons HIM and up, do publish what they'll be offering. HOWEVER--sponsors change at the last minute. The kid mixing up the barrels of Gatorade at the aid station may not read the directions, and you'll get it double-strength, half-strength, or whoknowswhat. At the last minute, they actually have blue Gatorade, not lemon-lime, and blue Gatorade is GROSS.

Or at mile 18 of a marathon, you realize you need salt, and the only salt they've got is pretzels. And you've never tried eating solid food while running.

This is not going to work for some people. And the sooner you know this, and at what distances/effort it begins to not work, the better you can plan your race nutrition.

As for hydration--I try to stay very well hydrated all the time--the notorious "pee" test (is it clear to very light yellow? Multivitamins mess this up a bit, but you'll learn quickly what the lighter shades of neon yellow look like when you're well hydrated).

Now, JO, since you asked specifically and your race is right around the corner

Try 1 gel or equivalent every hour, since 2+ per hour seems to be way too much for you. That should be enough to prevent a bonk, even if it may not be quite enough to keep you going at optimal levels. Remember that gels/blocks/gummies/etc. should always be taken with plain water. Remember: you can always take more, but the only way to take less is to barf and that costs you on both calories, hydration, comfort, etc. It's just unpleasant!

Ah-ha, I see you've established a plan for your 16-miler ... good ... and definitely stick with it. Gel every 45 minutes sounds fine, although Gatorade in between (depending on how much) would make it essentially the same as taking a gel every 30 minutes, which seemed like too much for you. Keep in mind the caloric equivalents between the different products.

Secretly I want to see how long I can make this post by quoting the longest post related to it.  Wink

Ok, so from all of your advice, and with tomorrow being my last long run before Big Sur, and because I am a total idiot at fueling and have only used up to 5 shot blocks and just water on the last 4 marathons I have run, I am going to try actually having some fuel in my body this time and see if that helps.

I'm glad you clarified about the Active articles being useless.  I thought that was a bit over the top but it was the first time I had ever seen a chart based on pace.  I think that a lot of the information out there is based on the "average" runner who is a lot faster than me.  Running a 5:40 marathon is a totally different beast from running a 3:40 marathon.  People run ultras in less time and they usually offer real food on ultra courses.  As my coach reminded me, a 50k is only 5 miles more than a marathon.   I've had this discussion with many fast runners before and there is quite a difference when you are trying to stay upright for 5+ hours than when you are trying to stay upright for 3 hours.   The information is not out there.  I did buy the Paleo for Athletes book and they break it down by time length of the race not distance.

I will try 1 gu/gel/shot block serving or whatever every mile 4 tomorrow.  That will be every 50 minutes but I tried walking 1 minute every mile the other day to simulate race day because I plan on taking a picture at every mile marker.

Gu isn't always my friend but a friend of mine told me she takes immodium before every marathon and that works to control the gu effects.   I'm not sure I want to do that or just stick with Clif, eventhough gu is served on the course.  I have a pack to carry.   I have never done liquid nutrition before this training cycle so the accelerade or gatorade is all new.  I do like the accelerade.  I'm not crazy about gatorade.  Again, I would have to carry.

If I seem a little panicked, I am not.  I am really, really curious.  I have trained for several marathons and know that I bonk on the long runs and the marathons.  I have just blown it off to me being out of shape and needing more training.   I have never considered it to be a fueling issue.  You see, I am sort of better than everyone else, existing on water alone and my excessive body fat,  that my body will miraculously metabolize during the marathon, and I will emerge after 26.2 miles looking like a super model.  Yeah, I am that warped.

I really am curious that maybe I do have the strength and endurance to finish Big Sur, eventhough my training has been interrupted with injury, sickness, and family stress.   It will be interesting to see what this vehicle can do when it actually has fuel to run on.

cdban66 - 2012-04-13 8:33 AM 10) Yanti - Congrats on 39,000 more post then me. You have given me more stuff to think about when I am in the water, toe pointing! I already swim with a mental picture of your avatar to remind me to rotate my body.

Hee hee.  I do the same thing...

Awwwrrr shucks ... shuffles feet ... grinning and pink

And DubSix ... I live in paradise, for sure (one side of where I live is bordered by an eco-preserve) but your place really does sound like paradise too!

Yeah, I've seen the photos. Awesome indeed in your neck of the woods. I have to start taking pics while I run. It really is quite nice.

All this talk of paradise I thought I'd share some of the beauty of the desert I experience whilst running/biking.  Not tropical, but beautiful nonetheless...

Wow, that is beautiful indeed!

x2 so vast and pretty!

I love the desert. I used to live in Redlands, CA, where mountains, desert, high desert, chaparral, and ocean were all within easy driving distance ... best of all worlds ... but for an island girl, it's amazing how much I loved the desert. Even in the middle of the day in summertime ... or snow in the high desert in wintertime! And how alive and beautiful and flowery and even green it is in springtime! I used to just drive out there, by myself, and hang out or hike.

If/when I ever work my way up to IM distance it will probably be IMAZ.  I love the desert, even with its wind and sand  storms.  I thought I was going to either melt, rust or mold during my years in Omaha! (Of course, the flip side is I don't have ocean view pools)

They are down closer to Albuquerque.  the one with the light poles is Sandia Peak and the other is the Santa Ana (Tamaya) Reservation.

I work in Santa Fe and enjoy running biking there as well.

Ohh I also wanted to share that one of my best friends, Andrea, is running her first marathon this weekend! She has lost 50+ pounds and I have kind of been mentoring her (selfishly I have just been inviting her to run with me all of the time so that I have someone to chat with but shhhhh Wink)

I am just super proud of her.

Good grief!  Serves me right for not keeping track of this thread.

First, Yanti feel better and promise to go see someone if things feel/get worse.

Second, good luck to all the racers this weekend.  Got get'em Ye Olde Fighting Manatees!

Thirdly, any coffee will do, as long as it has caffeine and I can put cream and sugar in it.  Coffee snob I am not.  I am kind of a tea snob though.  Asian teas and partial to the Jasmine pearl teas for its aroma.

Fourth, You guys are all training fiends! Wow...  I thought I was starting to ramp up my work-outs again.  My ramp looks a bit longer now. Geez

Finally got refit on the bike and it feels much better.  Seat was too high. Of course. Also started swimming intervals instead of just straight long sets. Wow. Those really suck.  As Tony Horton says, "I hate it, but I love it." I'm wiped out after my swim workouts now and I'm not putting up a whole lot of yards either.

Plans for this weekend may be in flux.  Our tri club is hosting a Back Yard Tri or a Build Your Own Tri this weekend. Buy I'll be darned if I get in that water without a wetsuit! My wife just remembered that she agreed to volunteer at a clinic on Saturday morning in Pensacola (she's a doctor) so that means I'm on Daddy duty.  So no chance I can do the tri anyways.  May try to get in a long ride in the afternoon.  Sundays are always my planned rest days so no conflict with church and spandex. :-P
