Nice job Melanie! I think a race with a river swim would be fun.  Maybe i'll find one of those for my calendar next year (although it will probably have to be in a state other than NM).

Kirsten: way to go helping that poor boy out, what a terrible experience for him but how fortunate you were there to make is a little less so.

Jen: GOOD LUCK, Monday racing Manatee!  Enjoy a little time for you!

Kirk: I'd say do the race since you have off mainly just for fun.  Don't wreck yourself trying to get your times down to what they were pre-injury back in May.

Salty: wow, that is some serious pole vaulting, impressive!! And as much as running and I don't get along, I do love me some trail running! That looks wonderful!

Click here for Zee r-r-race r-r-report (meant to be spoken in Sargeant Schultz accent (from Hogan's Heroes)).

Hehehehe I love the Hogan's Heroes intro to your RR. It reeled me right in!

Hello all, I have a few moments so I figured I get caught up:

Kirsten - I'm sure both the young man and his parents were grateful for the help. I knew I liked you for a reason!

Jen - Enjoy the race tonight!

Kirk - I'd have to echo the "fun" sentiments. Make sure your body is as close to 100% before really pushing it. And what time do they start serving beer in your town on a Sunday morning???

Melanie - Nice work on your race. I'm not sure how I'd react to the river water walk/swim, but you didn't let it deter you at all. Great job!

Adrienne - I love the look of the trails. They are a great place to run, aren't they?

Yanti - that swim looks like it was tough. I'm glad you stuck to the shorter of the 2 options. Congratulations on the discipline!

Kate - Great job, and a possible podium. Wow, I'm lucky if I know what a podium looks like.

Jo - I hope you are recovered from your camping. And are on a computer and not a smartphone

I hope everyone has an outstanding start to the week and keeps on keeping on. Remember, when you come to the fork in the road, grab it. You never know when you'll need it.

Tripopo - 2012-07-09 10:22 AM Contemplating another go at that sprint race, the 4th race of the series is the 29th and I am now off that day.  My question is can I get back to the same level of run fitness in three weeks that I had in May, sub 9 min/miles in May 10:30 min/miles yesterday?  Any chance to improve enough to better my time in May?  Thoughts from the pod would be appreciated.

The race is almost 4 weeks away which is a lot of time for improving.  IMO, 1:30/mile improvement is a lot but I've found that once you've reaced a level of fitness it is easier for your body to get back to a level of fitness than to get there the first time. I vote go for it!

Yes, but don't do it through hard running.

I think you should do the race for the experience and the fun. Maybe you can repeat May's performance, maybe not. It's worth a try.

However, given the recent difficulty with your knee ... I'd keep the running steady between now and then but max it out on the bike AS YOUR KNEE ALLOWS. That will set you up for the best run possible.

Yes, you get stronger and faster through consistency.

I understand we are all striving for PRs and I imagine that is why you are asking this but if PRs were easy to obtain, I'm not sure we would be striving for them.

I think in this case you should just run to the best of your ability. You can certainly train your butt off (listening to your body, and specifically your knee) and see where that leaves you in 4 weeks but I personally think making a specific time goal is not a good idea.

Make fun the goal and anything else that comes with is a bonus..

Cool, that's what I was figuring.  I just really enjoy the race and it's always good to have a realistic goal for me...  My plan running wise is just run 2-3 miles everyday with the dog, that should keep me at a steady pace and not overdoing it.

I am generally pretty casual with my workouts in that I don't let them get in the way of life. I'm the, "So what if I just ran 20 miles, I'll totally come play a pick-up game of basketball" type.

Anyhoo, I need you all to help me make a judgement call. Some friends are going on a 30-ish mile ride on Thursday. Normally I would go without hesitation but my race is on Sunday and I'd rather not compromise anything. On one hand, 30 miles is nothing...but shoot, I don't think I am thinking clearly so I'm not sure.

How hard are they going to ride?  Easy or hard?  Huge hills?  This is an A-race for you, no?  I think it depends on some of those answers.  If you don't do as well as you want are you going to wonder if it was because of the ride?

I did a 10K swim last year on no training ... with three bruised ribs and a concussion from the same tri ...

Now, see, there's actually some stake in your race (which ain't no sprint tri) because you've done a hell of a lot of really sound training for it.

To me it depends on the intensity of the ride.  If I ride 30 miles at 17-18 mph that's the equivalent of me running 6-7 miles at my HM pace, assuming course is fairly flat.  Since you've been riding a few miles here and there you leg muscles are used to it.

Blech ... want to read Kirk's report and scream at a few more Tri Talk posts, but ... I'm really about to puke.

I've STILL been seasick all day today from yesterday (and in some pretty wicked pain ... never been this sore from a race although the 70.3 I did that was windy and I was riding an upright bike position with cruiser bars comes close) ...

I am considering taking my bike for my long ride on Saturday tho. What do you think Felicia, will I be able to find someplace safe to ride?

I know a good running route north of I-70 with lots of hills. :-)

I'm sure the county roads, outside of town, away from I-70 and I-135 are good for riding. Those are the kinds of roads I ride around here. I just don't know for sure. It might be difficult to coordinate, but I wouldn't mind riding with you -- Salina is about 70 minutes from here.

You should have nice weather. A cold front came through last night, and today it is overcast, misty, and 85. Wow.

Great hearing how everyone's weekends went! We had a good time at the Pork & Brew, although we went for frozen custard instead of "brew" the BBQ was wonderful! Speaking of the Pork & Brew, I'm not in the results Surprised. Not a big deal as I kept my time myself.  Based on the results I was second out of 4 in my AG and about 1/2 overall.

So our niece is doing a relay for life in Salina, Kansas next weekend and we decided today to go be with her for it! She actually organized this team before she was diagnosed! So now I have to cram as much of my training into the early part of the week as possible.  I am considering taking my bike for my long ride on Saturday tho. What do you think Felicia, will I be able to find someplace safe to ride?

Cool, TJ.  That is awesome that you are going to be with her for the run!

The 11 hour drive (each way) across NM, OK and KS will give me a chance to finish some books I've started i.e. Chrissie, Swim Secrets and hopefully my Be Iron Fit will be here by then.

Read all of those - loved them all.  Now getting back to basics and reading Fifty Shades of Grey!

That would be great if we could coordinate it.  The Relay for Life is from 7 PM Friday to 6 AM on Saturday.  After that we'll probably go back to the hotel for a shower/nap and meet up with the fam again sometime later. My training schedule calls for 30 miles, but we'll see.
