The screen is a little psychedelic, the back door is a bit open, but if I push it really hard, I can close it. I think if I use a little duct tape, it should stick better. The buttons are a little bit hard to press, but I can still feel clicking, so it should still work. It has a little scratch on it, but my husband says, "Eh. Just a scratch. Buff it out and it'll be good as new." I trust his advice. My problem is...how do I turn it on? Good morning and welcome to a new week! Just a swim on the schedule today! Any training or equipment issues people want to discuss?
If I remember right from when I had the 305, you will struggle to get it into the charge too? Lets see, if I remember right you have a 1st anniversary coming up later this summer and according to tradition, 1st anniversary the customary gift is Garmin Edge products. |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by trei Sorry to hear of your losses, Becky and Ali. I have been pretty lucky so far in that my family has been pretty healthy and I'm not sure what I would do in regards to training in such an event. I know that my father who died 18 years ago still comes in to my mind during training at times and I'm sure he will be there as I finish my first ironman later this year. Had a good weekend of training while camping with my family in the Kettle Moraine forest, but not so good in terms of recovery., so really struggled on the swim this morning. Tomorrow is an off day for me, so hope Wednesday is back to normal. I train 6 days a week - swimming twice, running 4X and biking 4X. The off day can either be Tuesday or Thursday and I usually leave it up to how I feel or the weather. My first tri of the season is this coming a weekend (sprint) although it may turn into a duathlon due to the cold water temps. Hoping not. - Todd I hope it warms up for you Todd, or at least the water. Some of the heartier folks around here are in the lake training but I am looking for a few more degrees before I venture in. Of course some of those folks have Lake Placid coming up or Syracuse 70.3. Sometimes the recovery days are tough to really recover as we wind up doing more on our feet than we should. But thats life! |

Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by skitri Ali & Becky - so terribly sorry for your loss. Becky - where in CT did you father live? May be able to help find a gym or pool, etc... Brian - don't get too down on yourself - we all have these "setbacks" - I just scheduled an appt to see my podiatrist - my PF is flaring up. I had a "good" race in terms of realizing I'm not the same person I was 5 years ago. And my training seems to be on track for IMMT. I didn't really accomplish the goals I set out, but I learned where my strengths are and that quitting is not an option. I survived my first panic attack in the swim - 100m in and I couldn't catch my breath at all. Trying to be more aggressive in the swim was not for me. It was a very scary feeling of not being in control - everytime I put my face in the water my head would just pop right back up. So after being pummeled by the rest of the wave going over me- I treaded water for a bit, contemplated swimming to the kayak and calling it a day and then slowly just started breast stroking, then breathing every one stroke, then two and eventually back to 3 strokes - I was able to get comfortable, get back into my rhythm and finish - it was a total slug fest - never found any open water, but I did it. 5 years ago - I would have quit, made up some excuse and probably quit triathlons thinking I'm just not tough enough. Had a solid bike - just a tough course and I'm really just dumbfounded on how to get faster on this particular course. Last year I rode a 3:29, this year a 3:25 - but it felt a lot better this year - I was actually passing people on the hills, etc... A lot of people really bomb the descents faster than me, but I would catch them on the next hill. I did start having some stomach issues on the bike - just that sloshy/queasy feeling - which I attributed to the heat - did I mention it was 90% humidity. Started the run feeling good - saw my husband at T2 and told him I'd had a crappy swim. First mile felt good (8:40 pace - 147 hr), then it went downhill fast - my stomach started not feeling great - grabbed some gatorade & a gel at next aid station, felt better, then started running, but was quickly reduced to walking - this was the rhythm for the run. Misery loves company would be the theme for the run - so many people were walking, it was actually quite nice - I'd run for the bit, then walk and chat with whoever else was walking, run a bit more, chat with the next person, etc... Beside mile 1, I think I only ran mile 10 the whole mile....but still managed a 6:31 overall time - ended up 21 out 47 AG. Apparently, even with the panic attack I swam 10 seconds faster than last year - 36:08 in the swim - 13 out of 47. I was able to finish with a smile on my face and feel good about what I accomplished - which is what this should be about. The best part of the day was catching up with my family and watching my daughter go on the roller coaster - she's been terrified of rides since she was little and never enjoyed amusement parks (10 yrs old - autistic) - but yesterday she had a great big grin on her face and kept asking to go on again and again. I hear that the family aspect after the race is one of the biggest benefits of doing that one. Sounds like your daughter had a great time!! Great job on the race too! Especially improving on the bike like you did. Have you had problems with the swim before? I have come to the conclusion on my race last month in Florida is that I swam poorly because instead of swimming my race, I let the contact force me into swimming defensively which meant all form went out the window. Anyway, great race and congrats for the solid finish!! |

Becky - where in CT did you father live? May be able to help find a gym or pool, etc... I'll be staying in Hebron, CT, so close to Manchester or Glastonbury. I looked up gyms and pools in the area and found a couple of gyms but none with pools that I could see. I got a 7 day pass to one of them, but it says you have to have a CT ID--maybe I could say I'm moving there soon or something? If you know of anything in the area, please let me know. I'll have a rental car so I can drive somewhere to get in early morning workouts. Anything to keep moving! And congrats on your race, even if it didn't go as planned, it sounds like you ended up with a successful outcome and really fought through the challenges. Well done! |

Train well! It sounds like we had the same morning. I did a short run of hill repeats. Was supposed to swim, but all I could think of while running was all the work I need to do, so caught an early train instead. Becky - I'm sorry about your troubles but glad to see you're jumping back into it. DJ - As Ken said, Edge products are the bomb for roadies. I'm always jealous seeing them on the group rides but with the 910, can't justify another toy. If you want to stay with the multisport functions, I'll bet you can get a good deal on a used 305 or 310. I just got the race entry form for next months trail run and its the wackiest one I've every seen. The race organizer even invites all participants to his house the day before for a get-together. You probably wont see that at a WTC event... It's not a well advertised race so if any of you have any Northeastern friends who might be interested or if you just want a good chuckle, I can email the race packet. Happy Training! |

Elite 3515 Romeoville, Il | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Morning! Trying to shake things off! I went to spectate Leon's triathlon in Hammond Sunday. My wife was supposed to race, but she is dealing with some of her own issues and wasn't able to race either. So we have 2 cripples in the household! Anyway, I wanted to be there for my friends and especially my cousin. He had a tough race and really struggled with the swim. I think it was harder spectating Sunday! My wife went and sat in the car. It was about 45 and a steady mist. Nobody was prepared for that. It was supposed to be much warmer and nicer. So most people were stainding around in shorts freezing. I think I would of rather been racing and moving. This week is a new week. I talked to my coach some this weekend. I still don't know what I'm doing or really working toward at this point. I'm not sure whats possilbe. All I know is my coach is recommended a "long" rest from running. I'm not sure what that means, and he keeps asking me how I'm feeling so I suspect he's waiting for my body to tell me and then tell him. I have to find some motivation here to keep working on the bike/swim. I may not be able to race, but I have a big opportunity to further build on the bike and swim. He wants me to do a tour race and TT in Galena this weekend, but I'm not sure I'm there yet mentally and I'm definitely feeling fat and a little out of shape from my pity party lately. So I'm not sure I'm up for that just yet. I did get on the trainer last night and simulate some climbs. I was suprised how well that went. My coach definitely had the plan nailed down for me to taper and make big gains with rest before KS 70.3. Even with my pity party, the rest seems to be making me stronger on the bike. Says a lot for having someone who can see the bigger picture designing your workouts for you. |

Yes, it's different for everyone, but it's very helpful to bounce things off the group. Becky, gosh I'm so sorry about your father!! Each day does get better, even though there are times that I get suprised by my emotions. I wish there was something I could say that would help, but I know there's not. Hugs to you. DJ-Yikes, sorry about your Garmin, & your race. Duct tape does do wonders though! Brian-Sorry your still having feet problems, & are going to miss KS, that sucks. At least you and your wife can commiserate together. Hope you both get better soon. And if you can figure out the key to the "mental game" let me know! I had a personal distance record swimming this am, 3,500 (meters/yards?, I can never keep it straight). Felt great after, had to add up the numbers in the car, because it didn't seem that long. It's silly, but I cried a little in the car. It seemed fairly easy, so I'm trying hard to get my head back in it that I'm farther along than I feel. Bill & Ken- hope your meetings go well & you can get some work done! Hope everyone is having a great day! |

Sounds like you recovered well and ended up with a good race. Good job! That's great about your daughter too! I bet you were all smiles. Rita-Are you getting back on track? I know how you feel about having to work around your kids' schedules. I'm still adjusting to them being home for the summer! Todd-Oh the hills in WI, good to hear your perspective. I've got a lot of work to do as well. I went out on a very hilly route this weekend. Felt better than I expected, but I've got to improve both my speed & shifting while climbing. I think I need a "Shifting for Dummies" book! Usually I just downshift & am able to stay in the big ring up front, but this weekend I couldn't, but when I shifted to the small ring it was too easy in the back, so I had to then shift up quickly after moving to the small ring. The good thing was I only ran out of gears going down not up. Dwayne--Right now I'm at swim-3x, bike-4x, & run-5x per week if I follow the plan to the letter. With everything going on, it hasn't been perfect, but I'm trying to balance being more disciplined & still have a little bit of a life. I've got one rest day a week, & I almost always take it. I really need the mental break. Right now the only strength training I'm getting is thinking about doing it & realizing there's no time & lifting bags of mulch for yardwork. |

Question: How do you carry your salt tabs (if you use them) on the run?? I put mine in a mentos flip top container that I keep in my back pocket for both the bike & run, but they were making so much noise bouncing around on the run - I can't take 26.2 miles of that. Any suggestions? |

Now I do them both on the weekend, & switch them around depending on the weather. I loved getting one done during the week, but my current plan also has a run on my long bike day & a bike on my long run day & it's too hard to fit in during the week now, so both on the weekend it is. |

I haven't been able to do a long run since I hired my coach so I'm not 100% sure on this, but what it looked like is he was going to have me do a long ride on Sat and long brick on Sunday. The bike was 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours only though. |

What do you guys do, think about getting both the long run and long bike in? For me, it kind of depends. Sometimes I have my long ride during the week, most of the times it's on the weekends. Now that it has hit the 100's by 11am, I probably won't be doing any rides longer than 50 miles for a couple months, and if I do, I have to start at 5:30am. That's more painful. :-( However, it's pretty nice because by the time I finish my long(ish) ride on the weekends, I'm home by 9am, which is when my husband wakes up (he's NOT a morning person!!), and then we have the rest of the day together. So it's a win-win. :D |
