Congratulations Jeff on your first half marathon! What an impressive time too!Take a cold bath, that will help your calves recovery faster. (it is suppose to be an ice bath but I just can't bring myself to do it so I just make the water as cold as I can handle.)

Congrats Jeff, that's a great first HM. Looks like those last 3 miles were tough ones. Way to hang on!I love a good ice bath. Hard to get in, but once your in it feels soooo good.

Jeff. - I will add the finish line. Great job. Now you can really appreciate how hard it is to slow those first few miles - you will get it. Great job.

Ice bath - here's one way - just walk down the steps of the pool outside as soon as you finish the run - take off shoe and GO

Or

Cool water in tub - get in - then dump the ice in the water. Much easy than getting in ice water.

Another option. Walgreens ice packs with Velcro pouches. I now have a bunch. I do calves and quads first 20 minutes then hammies and hips or ankles and then ankles and knees. All the time laying on my back on the floor. Feet elevated on coffee table sipping a recovery drink.

Good topic - recovery drink - get some calories in within 45 minutes of the end of a workout. A ratio of about 1:4 protein to carbs. It keeps the metabolism burning. And calories getting burned as well.

Everybody---- the 5 finish lines I have this year are:
1 me
2 me
3 Briana
4 Patrick
5 Jeff

I think I have missed some - let's get it straight right now --- who else has crossed a finish line - 1 mile - 5k - bike ride - whatever - if there was an official finish line - then we record it. But you gotta let me know.

A good way to be sure I know is to write a race report - right here - for your favorite group of BFFs.

Start it with...
So my FINISH LINE started early....

I wonder if this group can get to 100 finish lines this year???

Bryan, would you give a definition of a "Race Report" so Amy will know what that is please?  Thank you.

Billy - I set that up perfectly for you to pile on.

I would say that Wikipedia would call it a descriptive written narrative of ones athletic effort during a organized or sanctioned athletic event. Quite often including souvenir T-shirts, a goodie bag and possibly a medal. Some people even post pictures of their event.

Kathy - that's why I was asking. I thought you had one too. And I had it in. It was Briana and Patrick holds that weren't there. Then I added them and then Jeff's and got all confused so I asked. I promise I can count. I promise. At least up to 140.6.

Ran in the cold outdoors today.  Cold calves.  Ouch.  But I think I did good.  Yes.  Yes I did.  I did good.  Three little loops at a nearby little league/soccer park with an asphalt bike/run trail around the perimeter.  I was able to do a whole lap in about 8 minutes so I'm hoping it was a 3/4 mile trail.  3 loops -  24 minutes. My goal is to run three 12-minute miles next weekend.

A quick commercial here... not quite Super Bowl-quality, but for a great cause...

Briana and I are working with Team Red, White and Blue to bring 20 military vets into Austin in April for a triathlon camp, working with coach Derick Williamson and pro triathlete Jessica Jacobs to educate them in "our world" (which sounds so weird for ME to say that!) and provide another avenue for them to return to a normal post-service life (okay, we are NOT normal, I get it).

If any of you are even remotely interested in volunteering, we would welcome the help. Take a look at the website www.AustinTriCamp.com

okay, now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

I wonder if this group can get to 100 finish lines this year???

Ooooh, I love challenges.  Surely with as many people as we have in this group, 100 finish lines should be easy!

As many races as I have done, I've never thought to count the finish lines each year.  Something new for me to do now.

Fabulous!  It almost does not matter how long the loops were...  You ran 3 x 8 minutes that is awesome.  Just be careful not to increase your distance/time too much too fast (speak from experience, surgery as a result).  The 10% increase per week rule really works and keeps you from getting hurt.

Way to go Suzie... you rock..

wow.. 100 finish lines??  hmmm... why not...

On a training note...may be a casualty to over doing it/training as well as not enough calories to support all this effort. (even tho i seem to eat non-stop) Factor in probably need more sleep, and in week 4 have hit the wall/potentially worn myself down enough to get sick.

Or.. i am just getting a cold!.. Took yesterday and today off to "revive"...

Hope to run a 5K this weekend and add my first ever 5k, a PR/PB, and a finish line for the group.

M.

Completed my first race of the year and I rocked!  It was a 10k and was going to be a tempo run for me instead I just listened to how I felt and just went out and ran.  I ended up coming in 2nd for my age group ....the first place person was just a minute a head of me and I was so hoping to catch up to her.  Maybe next time.  It didn't hurt that I knew that once I was done food and beer was waiting for me as we were at a brewery.

What is amazing is that I have been running for 10 years and this last year after working with a coach I have PR'd in all my races.  What a great feeling that is.

Congratulations to everyone for getting out there and doing something!

Great race Kathy!!  A testimony to training and keepingat it.  (I am having trouble with the quote and reply thing, so I hope you get this. I sent the same yesturday but it got lost some where.)

Suzie,  great goal.  Take it easy and try to keep your breathing even.  In and out, rythmic.  I find I can get my HR down a few beats by doing that.

Good  luck!!

Nope, haven't hit it yet, but Sunday is when it should happen based on my training plan anyway.

I have it on my calendar so I dont forget!

I was really dreading going to swim today , but this just gave me the motivation I need to actually get my day started. Thanks Suzie! And thanks everyone else participating in the virtual run next week that I can't see on my browser window right now
