Of course, it was difficult to concentrate on the breathing/poses when at one point the Ostrich (Marzipan is her name) in the exhibit on the other side of the deck, was watching us with a total look of disgust...I nearly cracked up quite loudly when I noticed her.

All in all a good day--the best part? Yoga moves back to Thursday evenings next week! Yay! Regular yoga in my life--and its FREE! Cool

That sounds like a riot!

I failed miserable on the nutrition on my first HIM.  But I learned what I needed and used that for my second.  I went all liquid for my first--that doesn't work for me.  I HAVE to have something solid.  But, I did get all the solids finished by my 3rd loop on a 4 loop course and then switched to liquid.  I also used only water for the first 2 loops, then switched to a mix of HEED and Perpetuem.  No 'salt' other than what is in the solids and liquids I took in.  On the run I took in water and gatorade, but slowed it way down after about 5km, cause I knew I would get waterlogged otherwise.

My rather longwinded point is that, as everyone will attest to, it is VERY personal to what will work for you.  You test stuff out in training,  but honestly, I don't think you can really figure it out for sure what will work on race day, until you race the first time.  It is extremely hard to mimic race conditions in training.

I agree, nutrition is very personal. I don't think EN says all liquid, in fact they do talk about powerbars and gels and recommend you get the sodium in the nutrition unless you are a heavy sweater or you are using water rather than a sports drink. At least that was my take away. I also agree i cant replicate race conditions while training , but i think EN has its clients do a race rehearsal or 2, so they may get a better handle on race day nutrition that way.

I know that in my first HIM I totally screwed up my nutrition. I didn't take nearly enough before the race or during the bike and then on the run I over did the water and gator ade and ended up with a sloshing stomach and no energy. I also over cooked myself on the bike in some really windy conditions and then went out too fast on the run. it was a real painful learning experience. My second HIM, I was much better, but still did not get enough calories in on the bike and probably used water where I should have used Gatorade. On the run I took in no solids at all b/c that just didn't appeal to me. I alternated between Gatorade and water or just ice. I did pretty well, but think with more calories on the bike I would have been better.

I did not have to pee on the bike at all, but did run off the course on the run to use a nice, indoor, air conditioned bathroom. It was lovely. Of course, I missed winning my AG ( there were only about 6 of us) by about 2 minutes, so maybe I should have joined the yellow socks club . Nah, the break was worth it!

anyway, the post was to show ENs race day strategy. I've cant vouch for it because I've yet to use it, but I will be using some of the ideas in November! < p> are you still in Amsterdam?

The latest research is all saying drink to thirst.  I would add saltsticks to that, and if you are hungry go some real food, nuts and olives are my food of choice.

I would really, really like to do real food during a long race.  I absolutely HATE gels.  I have to choke every single one down.  Chews, beans, blech!  They're all just too damn sweet.  Sweet is the last thing I want when I'm training or racing.  I want SALT. I don't think I could chew and swallow nuts--sometimes I have a little difficulty with that sitting around during cocktail hour.  I could just see myself aspirating a walnut on the course, haha.  Oy.  Olives sound really good, actually.  Or really salty guac.  Or sausage.  I'm actually laughing right now, but I'm only part kidding.  I faching hate gels.  I can't drink gatorade because it just shuts me down.

So, Jo, you have done this real food thing during a race, huh?  How long of a race?  How did you carry it?

Same.  I was so hungry by the end of my first race I was nauseated.  I used fruit fig bars.  Compact, 110 calories per.  I can't tolerate Power Gels, which is what is often supplied.

I cannot eat those Gu things - like swallowing snot...or something.

(S)witch, real food for me equals either Honey, which I carry in a tube or Fig Newtons. Bento box to carry either when I train, but I may experiment with the single pocket in my tri suit (which came in last night) to see if it'll work better. I may try Twizzlers during an upcoming Saturday group ride, just for a change of pace. I have done Gummy Bears and Swedish fish on those rides, but I'm not sure how "Real" they are

I also love Hammer Gels, but they are faker then Pamela Anderson.

ACK!  Oh, no.  Toooooooo sweet.  I can't do honey--too sweet.  Candy stuff, nope, no can do, but I totally want to hear how that works for you. Maybe I could do a fig newton... I'll try that.  I worry about the choking part.  I almost choke on gels, but maybe that's cause they're so freakin gross.

My sports bra is my bento box--I have so much room in there!  It's perfect:)

JO!  "Like snot...or something".  Hating the sweet and loving the salt like I do, I had this marketing idea one day running.  The name would be --- shot, and it wouldn't be sweet at all (by some miracle of science), wouldn't have a strong flavor and would be slightly salty (YEMV).  I was doubled over on the side of the road laughing at my naughty self.

Yeah, I figured you'd freak on the honey statement. The Fig Newton may be an answer for you though. They aren't too sweet but they are a bit dry. Have water handy.

:D

Marathon training we used to call gels BOB ... Boyfriend Outta Bag.

FWIW the 2x electrolyte PowerGels (Vanilla especially) taste like coconut milk to me. Yeah, there's sweet, but they're much less so, definitely a bit salty, and far less gooey (almost runny).

You can make your own gels, or add a not-so-sweet energy source (maltodextrin) with salt and "low salt" (potassium) to water for a to-taste sports drink. Some people really like blackstrap molasses for this because it's not that sweet and it's also already a good source of potassium (and other great stuff)--just add a bit of salt or even not (it's got about 1/4 the amount of sodium as potassium).

Those worked very well for me for awhile, and it had to be that exact type. I don't get along with coconut, so no idea on that comparison. Taste was a bit meh, but it went down ok, which is more than I could say for any other gel at the time. Definitely thinner and easier to work than a lot of others. Something that really stood out when looking around before is to watch the details of various products. That can help sort through a lot of things more easily, though it may still be a bit complicated at times. One was the caffeine (which I can't have at all). And it could vary by flavor even within the same type, not just the same brand. Another was the amount of salt in them. Most gels seemed to have ~50 mg or so, but the Powerbar ones were like 200. Think that was close to some salt pills.

Then of course somehow my body decided to reject these wonderful little things between seasons and had to start all over. It wasn't really a gag reflex or icky flavor, but a rather notable negative reaction to it. Kept getting sick after taking them, so had to start over looking around. The Picky Bars have worked and are made up of actual foods. They are bigger and aren't quite as concentrated as the gels though. Jesse Thomas is a lot of fun to follow too.

I just have to say I've loved reading all the instant-boyfriend/girlfriend posts.

My dad asked my mom to marry him on their first date and she said yes. This tells you a lot about my parents, and about me, too.

I wouldn't say theirs was a happy marriage, but my dad didn't have a happy relationship with anybody, so his with my mom was one of the better ones. Insofar as he was capable of love, he loved her and they were good friends. 53 years 'til he passed away.

Haha--OK, I think I can handle that;)

So Manatees here's a question for the day.  I have committed to trying a TT sometime in the near future, and I checked out my options last night and there's a 20 mile TT on Sunday night.

I was planning on doing a ~40mile ride that morning with a group, my first outdoor ride since my HIM last Sunday.  Weekends are really the only time I can hook up with a group to ride outside, and I've been trying to avoid riding by myself on our roads--little spooked.  If I miss this long ride, my next realistic option will be the following weekend, which is the weekend before my next race.

My question:

1) My next race is AGN and I have one more oly this season, 3 weeks after AGN (Hy-Vee 5150).  Would it be "better" for me to get a longer 40 mile ride in or would a 20 mile TT have a different but good training benefit considering my upcoming races?

I don't use Twitter, just following the blog.

Haha--OK, I think I can handle that

40 miler. 20TT is too close off the HIM for meaningful results, and you'll only get better with more cycling behind you and a good recovery period for it.
