Great job, Jayne! On the great walk and on your terrific season!Lol, George! Poor Suzy, why do you tease her so, you know how sensitive she is . Go sign up for those races while I continue my island feeding frenzy. Great pics, Steve! Sorry we missed you, seems we came in as you were heading out. Sorry for the big run on...did any iPad users figure out how to format? Take care everyone and have a great weekend!

jfought - 2011-10-14 8:03 AM Any off-season advice?  I'm intentionally taking a little break from biking, but I'm having trouble staying motivated when I'm not following a "real" training plan.  What do you all do over the winter months???

This is where I am totally different.  I focus on other things... Rock Climbing, Adventure Racing, Mtn. Biking, Hiking, etc... At least for a couple months.  Then start of the new year I start focusing on what it is I need to focus on!!  You'll be fin...

I like the idea of doing some other things!  I want to do some backpacking and I might dabble in some mountain biking.  I finally found a swim coach and I'm going to start working with her toward the end of the month.  I'm also going to focus on my running over the winter.  I finally got a Garmin, so that should add some interest to the running!  It will be fine, but I need a schedule or it's too easy to procrastinate.  LOL

Ok, today was my walking half marathon.  Finished 3rd overall with a time of 3:06.  (Hubby was 1st)  This was about 30 min faster than last year.  I'm stoked about that!!  The hardest part was wanting to run, but not doing it.  This event was billed as and intended to be a walk, so I wanted to stay in the spirit.  Need to send a thank you note to my surgeon. Laughing

Great job!  Do you realize some people don't walk a half marathon that fast? Woo-Hoo!

I am guessing that since she finished 3rd she realizes that everyone walking behind her didn't walk that fast...give the woman some credit Suzy!!

Good grief, I meant RUN that fast! I think my brain got wind blown on my run today!

Had a friend run the Columbus Marathon today.  His goal was to qualify for Boston 2013.  He missed it by 20 SECONDS.  That's gotta suck.  Can anyone explain why they keep changing the qualifying time and making it faster and faster?

what was his time? what was the time he needed?  YOu do know that you get that 59 seconds, right?  Not that it much matters under the new rules.  He would need several minutes less than the stated BQ time to run it.   I don't disagree with making the times tougher, especially for the females, but to me they should just have a stated time and you either BQ or you don't.  With the caveat that you still have to be quick on the draw during registration!

PS. George....most chicks that wear speedos for the whole event might look good from behind, but are flat as boards!  You must be a leg man.

He needed 3:15 and he finished at 3:15:20.  I really don't know anything about the Boston Marathon or any other race that has qualifying times.  I'm learning something new every day hanging out with ya'll.  Women have 30 minutes longer than men in each age group?  The qualifying times are different from one year to the next?  Women are filling up the slots (can anyone say gender wars)?  Who knew it was all so complicated?

Suzy, why do you hate Kyla and me? . No more 59 seconds...if I am not mistaken, BQ minus 90 seconds would have been enough. They have also done away with first come first served for peeps between 0 to minus 4:59....peeps have Mon-Fri to register, BAA lists everyone by there time and they cutoff based on their predetermined maximum capacity. My cousin Mark was minus 10 seconds and sadly didn't make the cut. Huge bummer as his time for 2013 will be 3:15 and to avoid the cutoff, probably closer to 3:12, Aiya! If you think those qualifying times are tough, NYC marathon QT's just dropped like crazy for 2013...under 40 men, 2:45, women, 3:00! Women in our AG, to 3:21. They must've read John's article (or wrote it!).

Jayne, to "sort of" answer your question, my theory is that there is a huge increase in runners these days! I think it is a good thing that marathon running (and endurance training in general) has grown in popularity as our society has become more health conscious and runners are getting speedier, less injuries because of the emphasis on core strength these days, and therefore more plentiful and these prestigious events are becoming impacted...organizers have to find the most fair process they can. Not saying it's always fair, but it does seem understandable. I think the registration process for Boston this year was really fair compared to last year when it really was first come first served and sold out by the afternoon on the very first day of registration. Unprecedented. The only reason I got in was because John reminded me that morning! So if it weren't for him I probably would have never done MOO or Boston! Double Aiya.

I couldn't disagree more with this statement.  IMO, BAA should tell us what the BQ time is and if we are astute enough to wake up and sign up for it, we're in.  Why should I be penalized because you can't remember what day the registration starts?   Chet made the BQ time stated, but yet didn't get in because he was 1:14 over M-W reg (or close to that) so didn't get to sign up on day 1.  Makes zero sense to me.

PS. Said nicely.

Um, flat as a board? Said nicely and with a wink. Was too busy following your first IM and lost my wits in 2010, as registration was the day after IMWI. We can agree to disagree on the registration process.

So why isn't the BQ just 90 seconds faster to begin with versus playing some game that the runner doesn't have control of?  I am sorry if I seem wound up about this topic, but I just don't see why this is logical.   It might seem that way to you because your time is so much faster that what is necessary, but for the person that strives hard to get the stated BQ and then misses it because of some arbitrary number seems wrong.  And remember I'm not fighting for myself...I am not doing these anymore!

Hi, all!

Steve - LOVE the pics!  Nice.

I think Boston is 'fairer' for 12 than it was for 11 - but I'm biased.  I got in for 12, and hubby didn't for 11.  I like the fact that it wasn't a first-come, first serve thing, but rather a time-based system.  FWIW.  It is frustrating racing, and not knowing EXACTLY what time you need - but it did spur me on.

I started PT - and I really like the lady!  She thinks I'll be able to race, hope she's right!  Back on the bike, and some running, this week.  Still doesn't feel great, but I have high hopes.

Got out of the house really early yesterday, knew I had to be home to get Zach to a cc meet.  A ride that I usually do in 1:45ish I allowed 2:15 - given my current physical condition!  It was a beautiful morning, and I was riding into the sunrise, and flying.  FUN!!!  I was really close to a best time for this ride when I heard/felt that horrid bumpy sensation.  FLAT.  At mile19.  Arg.  Thorns in the tire.  Pulled over, moved pretty quickly actually. Front wheel - boom, boom - back on the road.  2 miles later....thump, thump.  BACK WHEEL!  Arg.  Not so quick - this bike's back wheel is a PAIN.  I need more work on this.  A friendly guy from another club stopped and helped me get the wheel back on.....good to go.  2 miles later.....thump, thump.  Low, but not flat - and I have no more tubes, no CO2 - and no cell coverage.  (Uvas, Kim!)  And it's 8 miles to home, and 25 minutes until we need to LEAVE.

Panic.

Nice guys stop - with a pump - we (okay, he) pumped up the tire and I started praying.  Made it 4 more miles...thump, thump.  Repeat, another nice group stopped.  3 more miles......THUMP.  This baby is toast.  I'm now 20 minutes LATE, and over a mile from home.   Cell phone is working....but nobody is home - it's Saturday, and they're all out riding!!!!

Walked the bike...in the cleats.....up the hill......arg.

We leave 45 minutes late.....I drove just a BIT fast......and we arrive 30 minutes late.  BAD MOMMY.  Coash was ready to scratch him and move up an alternate.  He didn't - Zach nailed the race with an 18:10 on a hilly 3 mile course, and I'm thinking it was the adrenaline - can I take credit?!?!

Last night was my HS reunion.....had a blast!  Funny, the women were all very recognizable, the men - not so much!!!

Hubby's in Argentina, and we just got word that the airports are shut down because of a volcano.  Lovely.

Well, that's my last week - sorry I haven't been posting - but I'm back!!

Sorry, can't quote that much content, but here's the thing, and let's take Chet for example, in 2010, he qualified by over 4 minutes, and he didn't go on the site to register until it was too late and it had closed. Do you think that was fair, either? Had the process been in place, it would have been no problem and no rewarding people with higher speed Internet. Instead he (and Linda's hubby, Jeff) get locked out because they are busy working or whatever the case may be. It's not totally fair either way, but it seems more fair this way (to me). Maybe next year everyone gets in because the times are so much lower...I do think that might be the case, but who knows. I totally get what you are saying, but first come first served seems less fair to me. not all of us can just stop what we are doing to get online in the middle of a work day, giving people two days to log on seems fairer to me.
