carrie639 - 2010-03-16 7:59 PM I am still not buying the whole "running is fun" and I am still have problems convincing myself that soon as I get outside away from home I won't have to worry about going to the bathroom.  I am terrified that I will have to go to the bathroom and there won't be one around.  How do you get over that?

I think it may be a good idea to stay within a mile of your home in case you get the urge to go.  That way to can get home if you need to.

Hopefully the more mileage you rack up outside the less anxiety you'll feel.

fungi32 - 2010-03-17 6:16 PM Last run today easy 5 k, little swim, think I will bike tomorrow and Friday just walk around Washington. We will probably check out the Smithsonian and the  race is Saturday, if the feet hold out I think I should be fine will not set any records though.

Great Kip!  Can't wait to hear how things go for you

carrie639 - 2010-03-15 10:19 PM So got 5 miles in today (with a little walking).  No blisters - YIPPIE, but I don't know how on earth you people run for fun or enjoyment. Running on the treadmill must be what is killing me.  Even with loud music and a tv on I still stuggle with constantly checking miles and time.  It kills me.  I think I really need to get outside soon, plug in the ipod and enjoy the scenery!!!!

I would love to be running a bunch right now...

... I'm pretty sure I have runner's knee though... very not good

I'm sorry to hear that.  Is there anything you can do for that besides just rest?

besides be a dummy? haha I suppose when the pain subsided a bit that jumping on the bike for LT repeats wasn't the smartest thing to do :/ Oh well, you pay for stupidity.

I suppose my new plan is today and tomorrow OFF, then this next week I'll transform myself into Aquaman and swim every day (doesn't irritate...well... hasn't yet) and RICE. Hopefully it won't set me back more than a week or so on the running.

We'll see...

Have been having great training and nutrition for the last two months.  Last Wednesday at the end of the swim my calf cramped real bad and I thought it would go away.  Next day it was real sore.  I was pushing off the wall pretty hard and I  rode and ran hard the night before.  I've never had a cramp that turned into a soreness the next day.  I'm going to try to ride tomorrow and go from there.

Great race in Washington, well organized and one of the prettiest runs I have ever been on, through town right towards the capital building twice past Washington monument. really nice. The run was about right for me miles 5 through 8 were hills but nothing like I had been running on. lots of support on the course. I think I could have ran it a little faster just afraid of blowing up and not finishing but felt great til the last mile which was up hill. Overall fairly pleased would dothat race again, really would like to try and run a sub 2 hour one day.

I worked on my calf all friday night.  Hot tub, stretching, hard massage with stick and hands.  Got up Sat. beautiful day had a 56 mile ride and 3 mile brick.  Went out easy, but it turned out that it was fine.  Gave the calf the same treatment Sat. night, and I got up today did a 12 mile run, and it was fine.  Ran 1 minute faster pace than my half mary in Oct. and the run was much hillier.   I was relieved.

Good training to you this week.

So glad to hear it went well.  And feeling great until the last mile is a huge accomplishment!  Congratulations!

Nice job Kip!  Very sound race strategy considering you said you hadn't run that distance in a long time.  It's hard to hold back at the beginning of a race.

I agree with Neal.  I immediately zero'd in on the after race brewski.  Excellent choice!

You are very lucky you could walk the next day.  Usually if I get really bad calf cramps, I hurt so bad I can hardly walk the next day and working out is out of the questions for 3-4 days.

I was very lucky at swimming a few weeks ago, it didn't get to that point.

I found those 2 weeks ago, that as soon as I jumped in the therapy pool (or hot tub) my cramps went away immediately . . . as if they never existed.  maybe that is what helped.

So you thought 1:23 was slow, I was swimming 2 minute 100's tonight.

I was a little disappointed cuz I kept thinking of your time when I got back and looked at the clock.  However, after practice I thought about it, and that is actually a pretty good time for me.  My last time trial before my first race last year was a 1 mile best of just under 34 minutes. At that same pace tonight (which I should be able to do) my 2 min 100 pace actually gives me a 30 minute mile . . . THAT IS HUGE!!!!  I have really only been swimming since last May (competitively)

Question for you all:

Workout I was supposed to do:

Start in big ring, easiest gear. Spend 3' in each gear gradually working your way to hardest gear (total 27'). Leaving it in big ring, hardest gear, do 10' TT. Go small ring, middle gear for 5' spinning smoothly. Go back to big ring, hardest gear, and do another 10' TT. Gradually work your back to your easiest gear by 1' for cool-down.

I could not do the TT's, so did the work up gear by gear 2x, which was hard by itself.  I literally could not do the TT. I was gone by the last 3 minutes. Is that weird, or something your body has to get used to.  Also, I found on the second work up, the lower gears were easier to keep a higher RPM, but the harder gears were still hard.

Don't sweat it too much.  That's a tough workout even without the time trials stuck in there.  Personally, I wouldn't do a TT in my hardest gear.  That sounds like sadistic torture even I wouldn't enjoy

I have quite awhile til my half IM(September) but I really have no working knowledge of nutrition while racing. I have never even used a gel or anything other than water or a sports drink on any of my races. I planned on taking a gel about half way through the 1/2 marathon but was so slow they had all been taken. I would like to start trying some nutrition strategies on long bikes/bricks etc. to start planning my nutrition for Septembers race, any suggestions, strategies, articles etc. that could help would be appreciated.
