Hahaha...it never ends guys. Just when you think, "okay, I have everything I need" there's something else that comes up. A new set of running shoes, better tires, new carbon bike shoes, new tri shorts, boxes of gels, new improved hydrodynamic swim goggles, lactate testing, blah, blah blah.

Anyone interested on what it costs to prep for and race an Ironman? It's staggering.

I keep telling my wife that I don't spend any mony on booze, I don't spend any money on drugs, I don't go out to the peelers or play golf, or hang out late with the boys, etc. I'm such a good boy, this is the only thing I spent money on, so you know...

Doesn't work though, but I keep trying

The problem is that we manage to rationalize it - and it makes pefect sense - but they just have an akward way of looking at things.

I still try to keep my purchases discreet and relatively low-key.  She's part of the team too.

I had a great 8k on saturday. My wife and kids worked a water station during the race. They all tossed water on me as I ran by, and the kids ran along side me for as long as they could. It was fantastic!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Well I think my husband is all for my tri-gear purchases since he knows he will equal $'s in chrome/lights and goodies for his truck. Seems he has a good argument now I have a hard time saying no to him lol.

I am glad you all posted about aero-bottles, I am looking into the speedfil one , I think I might go a head and order it this week.

I was supposed to race yesterday but with my trip to Texas coming up early Tuesday morning I thought I'd better get ready for it instead.

Hope everyone had a good weekend so far!

12th out of 38 in my AG.  I couldn't ask for much more.  Plus, NO flat tires!  And the best possible run I was capable of.

Race report here:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=127590

Celebrated by eating a chocolate croissant for breakfast today!  I'm going to have a bit of rest this week, and next week I'm looking forward to heading down to Waterton and Glacier National Park (yes, I'll be careful of bears!) for vacation.

Have a great week everyone!

Sounds like everyone has been having a great weekend. That's fantastic! Well done to those who raced!

My weekend was okay. Nothing special. Tried to get some training in but was bamboozled either by stuff to do around the house or by miserable weather. I went out to attempt a long ride yesterday and about an hour and a bit into it it started raining...again. I'm so sick of getting rained on it's not even funny. This summer's weather completley sucks.

And of course, now that I'm in the office today, it's nice and sunny outside. Bah!

Caius - My next tri is on Sept. 6th. 400 yd swim, 1.5 mi run, 12 mi bike, and another 1.5 mi run.  I'm curious if there is anything I can do this late in the season, with only 3 weeks until the race, to improve my speed on the 2 run legs, since they are so short.

Earlier this summer, I could run 8 or 10 miles comfortably.  In the last six weeks or so, I have dropped my running to 3 or 4 miles (a few times a week) since that's all I'm required to run the rest of the season in competition.  Yesterday I did 3.3 mi in 30:12 (1/4 uphill, 1/2 flat, 1/4 downhill'ish).

I didn't know if there was anything I could do to "tweak" my running to increase my speed between now and raceday, without risking injury.  Currently, I warm up before a run, stretch a bit (lightly), watch my breathing as I begin my run (I'm too old to get injured!) and after 1/2 mile or so, I pick up my pace to my 5k pace, which is about as fast as I can comfortably go.

If your advice is "leave it alone and don't mess with anything this close to race day", I can live with that.

Took my new Michelin Pro Race 3's out for a ride yesterday. They are 23's instead of my old 25's and weigh about 100 grams less each. They rode great, until I got a flat! It was my fault though, as I did not see nor avoid a pretty big hole in the road. I hit it so hard that I thought I broke something! I am somewhat hesitant about using then in my 56 mile race coming up though...

Terry, I don't think that there is anything that you can do in the time available to increase your speed; well at least from a workout perspective. Just keep doing what you're doing and continue to add one speed swim, bike and run workout into your weekly routine in order to stay sharp.

However, what you CAN do is to make sure that your body is ready to put out 100% of the fitness that it has build over the past year(s). Do that by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated and eating as healthy as possible.

Timmeh how do you like the MPro3s? (Other than the flat?)

They're supposed to have a very low rolling resistance which means an improvement in speed, but frankly I find them to be slower than the stock Vittoria Diamante Pro Light tires that came on my Cervelo.

Interesting you should mention this Caius. I had bought a single tire earlier in the season - but then returned it after thinking I had bought a pair for the price. The price just shocked me. But now I've found that I can buy a pair off eBay for basically the same cost of one in my LBS. I was contemplating between the Michelin or the new Continental GP4000 - not sure which way to go.

Well both of those tires, the Michelin Pro 3 (or the older 2s) and the GP4000, seem to have really great reviews and supporters. Not sure you would go wrong with either one frankly. Good job on digging up a lower price. Care to share the link?

If the shipment is coming from south of the border, does it include shipping, duty, brokerage fees? Those can add up quickly.

My only point of comparison is with the vittoria zaffiro 700x25's that were stock on my bike. I like these much better. I was able to post about 1.0mph faster speed over a 30 mile ride, but I can see where they may be of some concern on wet roads. It looks as though the conti gp4000's have a little tread pattern to them where as the Mpro3's are slicks. I would like to compare them to conti's and vittoria's, but they are a bit pricey to be doing that right now.

I ordered mine from all3sports.com. Was originally going to get them off of ebay, but I needed tubes as well, and it was cheaper to get everything from one place instead of two seperate shipping charges.

Tim, I ride 23s too.  What are they pumped up to (PSI?)?  I keep mine at 100 - 110 or 115.  They crush acorns!  What is the PSI on the sidewall?

Caius - Thanks for the advice, I kind of thought there wasn't too much I could do.  Just thought I'd ask.  Just stay healthy and hammer the run.

There's nothing to worry about with slicks vs. tires with tread when it's raining. My old Trek 1500 bike had tires with little treads on them but the Cervelo Diamante's were completely slick. I was worried that they'd be slippery but that wasn't the case at all. They gripped like glue in the rain. The Pro3's are also slick and they are even grippier than the Diamante's. Every tiny little thing, the pebbliest of pebbles stick to them. I guess it's just different compound construction. Whatever it is, grip isn't a concern; wet or dry.

Caius,

Here's an ebay link (bit long I know):

http://cgi.ebay.com/MICHELIN-PRO-3-ROAD-BIKE-TIRES-700-X-23-PRO3-GR...

The shipping is listed as $19 - but when you drill down you can see it can be as low as $17. Since they ship via USPS the brokerage fee shouldn't be more than $5, and given that the tires will fall under rubber or bicycle they'll have a 0-8% duty rate applied (if you find a seller that doesn't include the packaging then customs have to assume the product originated in the US and charge 0%).

My new tires, which served me extremely well on Sunday, are Vittoria something-or-others (too tired to check right now).  I don't know much about tires but these ones did not let me down!

Just wanted to give myself a public pat on the back.  Ran my quickest 5K last night.

 21:44 - woo hoo!!

At some point next year I'd like to break 20 minutes, but I think that is a ways off.  My pace was 4:21/km, so I'm not sure what I need to do to get it down to 4:00/km.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

Dude! That absolutely rocks!!! Can you share the knowledge? I'd like to get down to that time. Amazing!

As a side note, I went for a swim today at lunch and the life guards said that the pool as 72F yesterday. Well somebody must have turned the heat knob up too much because today the pool was 90F!!! It was absolutely nauseating. Felt like swimming with a fever. Sheesh!!!

They are rated at 87-116psi. I have been running them at 115. Replaced my punctured tube with a conti race light tube. Works good so far. The only problem I have now is that I have French tires and German tubes! They are getting along ok for now though

Great time Neil!! I want to do that, too!!!

Aloha for now! I am heading to Hawaii for a friends wedding!! Planning on renting bikes for some beautiful rides. I hope to get some running in, too. If I am lucky I will swim a few laps but mostly will play with the kids.

I have a tri on the Sunday, 24th and I return on Fri, 22nd! It is my favorite race I couldn't miss it.

Last Sat, I did some fast 100's (yds). I am so excited because the first set I was swimming 1:29's !!! I was 5 sec faster than I have been!! I am getting closer to my high school 100's workout pace of 1:20!! WaHOOO!!

Wow, Kristina and Neil - what great paces!  I would love to be sub-25 and sub-2!  I don't know if have to believe that that is possible for me!

I'm heading off to Waterton and Glacier parks for about 10 days!  I promise not to be eaten by a bear.

Have fun and good luck to anyone racing!
