Thanks for all the advice with the nutrition belt and wetsuit. I think since everything the course has for nutrition is stuff I regularly train with and I haven't had any GI issues with anything before, I am going to live off the course for the run and for go the extra weight.

carrie639 - 2010-06-03 4:06 PM Another wetsuit question:

Did our first OWS last night and the water was very warm (75 degrees) and I was too warm in my full wetsuit.  However, I was about 2-3 minutes faster in a 1/2 mile than I was last year (party because of better technique, probably mostly because of kicking).  Given that wetsuits offer that extra speed, would you recommend a sleeveless or a speedsuit?  Will the sleeveless leave me a little cooler than the full?  Will I need to expend more effort in the speedsuit because of less buoyancy?

The sleeveless will definitely keep you a little cooler compared to the full sleeve.  I have no experience with speedsuits, but from what I've heard the added buoyancy isn't near that of a wetsuit so I don't think the benefits vs cost are all that great.  I will probably never own a speedsuit but if you have the extra money to toss at one it will be slightly better than swimming with nothing.

Best of luck this weekend, Scotty and Neal!

Carrie - I've considered getting a sleeveless wetsuit because I think wearing a full wetsuit makes my shoulders work too hard and tires me out.  But, I do swim faster in a wetsuit normally.

I've got another long pay ride Saturday (hopefully this one goes better than the last one).  It's a point to point ride and ends at a Winery, so that should be motivation to get there fast!

Will be volunteering Sunday at the Danskin tri as a swim angel.  Should be fun.

Have a great weekend everyone.

I've got my half mary tomorrow morning in the SF Bay Area.   Leaving about noon today-want to get up in plenty of time to pick up my bib and check out the lay of the land.  I'd like to PR--who wouldn't--but I really am not sure what to expect.  I'm just going to go out there and do the best I possibly can.

Not yet!  Three more weeks until my first HIM - I've started my taper.  50 mile bike on Sat and an easy 10 mile run on Sunday.

Good luck to all the racers!  Be sure to report in with your results on Monday!

Good luck on your races, Neal, Scotty, & Michelle!

Tomorrow, I have a "super clinic" for the marathon training program I'm doing for the summer.  Basically they just have a lot of speakers come in and talk about different aspects of marathon training (nutrition, injury prevention, hydration, etc).  Afterward I'm going through group leader training since I will be pace leading this summer.  Then after that, I'm headed to the bike shop to finally get my bike fit.  I've been meaning to do that for about a year but have never gotten around to getting it done.  I'll have them install my aerobars too.

On Sunday I'm going on a century ride that offers different distances.  I was originally hoping to do the metric century (62 miles) but both people in my carpool are doing the full 100.  They're both faster than me, so I'm thinking of splitting the difference and doing the 75 mile route.  I'm not sure if that's a good idea, but it's one of those thing where they have rest areas with lots of food, so if anything I can rest a while before starting back again.

Briana- that ride sounds great.  If I went on a ride that ended at a winery (or, preferably a brewery) that would totally motivate me to go the longer distance, haha!

Tri club is hosting OWS at the site of my next race tomorrow morning.....I will be there. Then I will ride the course cause it's a hard azz ride and will get most of my training done for the day early to beat the heat!

Happy training and racing this weekend!  Have great races Neal, Scotty, & Michelle!

Weather is iffy here for the weekend but hoping for a long bike on Saturday and a long run on Sunday.  Still planning out the race schedule and cramming a couple of sprint tris into the marathon training program.  I thought it would be easy, not so much.

What is your favorite brand of bike shorts and tri shorts?  Why do you like them?

Good luck to you, too, Michelle!

As far as shorts go.....Suguoi (not sure if I spelled that right) tri shorts are my favorite.  I am actually one of the weird ones that doesn't wear bike shorts at all.  I even wear tri shorts for my century rides.  Just can't stand the padding between the legs.  It's a personal thing.  I also have a couple of Louis Garneau (again, sp?) tri shorts that I like as well.

On another note - anybody here live in Florida?  I'm signed up for IMFL.  People keep asking if it's still going to happen with all this oil spill mess.  Originally, I wasn't worried as IMFL was still months away, but the more people that ask, the more nervous I get.  This will be my first IM and I want it to be this year as I turn 40.  Starting to wonder if I should start looking for a back up plan.  That could be expensive thought with registration fees what they are.  Lots to think about.

I usually wear Pearl Izumi bike shorts, also have some Terry which I like a lot.  I have the BT tri shorts....don't recall the brand.
I like the padding on the Terry a little more than the Pearl Izumi but they are pretty equivalent in terms of comfort and wearability.

Sounds like quite the busy weekend for you.  Let us know how things feel with the new bike fit and if you learn any great tips at the clinic.  Enjoy your ride, too, whatever distance you choose to do.

I have 3 pairs of Pearl Izumi tri shorts that are my favorites to bike in.  I prefer the reduced padding of the tri shorts to regular bike shorts, but will wear my other shorts if laundry builds up.  I've done up to a century in tri shorts and felt great.

With the race 5 months out you'd like to think that everything will be cleaned up and okay, but I don't think anyone really knows what the long-term ramifications will be.  Like you needed an oil spill to make you even more nervous about the event

My swim wasn't very good. First set was 500 yards downstream.  Had issues just getting settled and had to backstroke most of it.  Think my endurance is still lacking post illness and the lack of sleep (thanks to these darn hotflashes) are hurting me.

Second swim was just a 20 minute total time, up against the current and back.  I was able to free style the whole thing but was patheticlly slow.  Again, think it's a combination of the recent illness and lack of sleep.

Tri club should have OWS this Friday weather permitting.  I just need to go more.

The ride was good, had decent speed for most of it.....the hill is a beast--mentally that is.  I have ridden it mayn times, and ridden substantially harder hills but for some reason this one is the one that mentally plays with my head.  Should have done the loop a second time but was running out of water and nutrition so I figured coming home was safer.

I was there yesterday too.  Should have make arrangements to meet.  My bad.

Swim was fun, and ride was a little challenge on my back.  Did the run too and it was hot!!!  Jumped in the river to cool off after the run and that was a relief.

You doing Tidewater next week?

No, my next race is Tavern.  You doing Rocket's Landing?

I can never do the run without the race volunteers cause it's so crazy through the woods

I hope she uses the original swim, I don't like that long walk out to the swim start for the plan B swim.  What did you think?

Back from the See Jane Run Half.  What can I say except it was the PR that wasn't.  Garmin time...2:14:22.  Chip time...2:16:20.  Would have PR'd with the Garmin time...and most definitely if it wasn't for all the craziness at the water stations/stops.  Yes, you read that right. Stops.

Full race report at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=211318

But here's the condensed version...they just flat out didn't have enough volunteers manning the drink stations.  Most of the race was on trails along the San Francisco Bay, so runners stayed fairly bunched up for most of the course.  That meant hoards would literally hit the drink stations all at once.  They never had enough cups filled so you usually had to slow way down or wait while someone poured you water or Powerade.  It was the craziest at the Gu station at Mile 6.  They were so far behind that I actually climbed behind the table to pull a cup out of the cardboard box and POURED MY OWN WATER!  I'm thinking that the slowdowns and stoppages easily cost me five minutes on my overall time.  But hey, what are you gonna do?

Overall it was a great event and I really enjoyed running it with some of the gals from my tri club, Just Us Girls.  Would do it again despite the water station situation.  Just a little sore today--my quads are still feeling it, but I should be fine in a day or two.  Planning to lay low for the rest of the week recovering (I say that now, but will probably be going buggy by Wednesday or Thursday).  Have some business travel this week, so that should keep me preoccupied.  My husband and I are going to an exotic car show at a local country club this AM, so I better hit the road.

Thanks to everyone for all the inspires and well wishes.  Meant a lot.
