Subject: RE: BamaDC's mentor group is Closed!
Did my long run yesterday.  Not good at all.  Started my run at a heat index of 111. Came home in complete darkness after 8.75 miles. I walked a good bit on the second half. Lost 11 lbs (8.5 after I drank the 40oz I brought with me). And on top of the miserable run I just broke my third MP3 player in the last few months.

Frankly I don't know what to do with these long runs. I can't replace 11lbs of fluid. Once I lose 5+ I start struggling. I can't carry that much water even if I could drink it (which I can't - I can't tolerate that amount of fluid intake). I want to get some long runs in every week, but haven't the foggiest idea how conquer this problem. The weather sure as hell doesn't seem to be changing much.

Help?

cornfed - 2010-08-22 10:24 AM I piked up my new wheels and powertap yesterday.  I went with Velocity Deep V and the pro+.  I got them hand built by a local guy that does nothing but build wheels.  I was going to get the elite+ but he cut me a deal on the pro+.  I took everything out for quick spin at the shop then went for a long ride in the evening.  I'm pretty happy with everything.  The rims are rock solid.  I doubt it has as much to do with the new rims as the fact that they're hand built.   I had a decent ride (I stayed out too late on Friday night so I was dragging butt all day), 2 hrs, 37 miles, 222 avg watts.  I'm playing a trial version of WKO+.  I calculated a normalize power of 261 but I haven't entered a FTP.  Any idea how it's comping up with that?

NP is a pretty complex calculation.  In a nut shell it starts taking averages of Power Output in 30 second intervals.  And it calculates a power your "body" could attain if you pedaled smoothly for the entire ride.

You can actually get a close estimate of your FTP over 3-4 hard rides.

NP isn't that bad.  Take those 30 second averages and then take each to the 4thpower and add them.  Then take that to the 1/4th power and divide through by # of 30 second intervals.

Having looked at a couple programs I like Golden Cheetah better than WKO.  Take  a few hard rides and it will calculate a critical power for you (which tends to be close to FTP).

Can you track running with golden cheetah?  I'm still playing around with WKO but the ability to track running (and others sports) seems to be a nice feature.  I read "Training and Racing with a Power Meter" before buying my powertap because I wanted to really understand what it could do for me.  There is a chapter about using the Performance Manager in WKO.  I skipped it at the time but am rereading it now.  Seems like it could be a very useful tool especially if you can coming all the different sports in there.

GC does biking only.  It does have a performance manager in there, though.

It is free, so why not play with it?

I'm not completely sold on WKO so I'll checkout GT.  Guess I should hurry up and do it while still have the WKO trail so I can compare.

I'll take a closer look at it.  I'm not completely sold on WKO so I should probably play with GT while the trail is still active.

Unfortunately, yes.  I try to get out on the weekends, but I'm slammed during the week so the trainer is easier.

I've actually been thinking about setting up the trainer and for interval/tempo rides.  It's pretty hilly around here but they are all short rollers.  I've always felt that I don't get good workout because I can't keep a consistent effort with all the up and down. One ride with the PT confirmed this.  Riding downhill is really easy!

I've got an article that Mike Ricci wrote and it explains the performance manager really well.

If you load your data consistantly and update your threshold values, it can predict your peak before a A race.

I do all my interval sets on the trainer.  ITs just easier to hit your target wattage.

Another reason that I need a power meter.

I've got to increase my biking, and I'm just not getting in enough time outside.  I'm thinking of adding more trainer sessions (interval sets, etc.) to compensate for some of the other.  With winter approaching, i'm guessing it's a good time to start getting used to the trainer anyway.  Seems to take less time to get on the trainer, than try to get everything together to get outside as frequently as I would like.

I will definitly find out how much my biking has been suffering this weekend.....

Bob's Bikes in Homewood. Apparently they're Rodger's (store owner's) wheels that he rents out. Not sure if they're tubulars or clinchers though...

I'm thinking about buying a wetsuit for my race in Sept.  I tried a couple on the past weekend.  I haven't ruled out the option of renting one.  But I found a coupon code for xterra which works out to be half off and free shipping on their vortex 3 (full sleeve).  The also have a sleeveless for $99 but no discount.  What do you think?   Should I get a sleeveless or full sleeve?  Or should I just rent?

I've got vortex full sleeve and a volt sleeveless. I tend to prefer the sleeveless. I say buy the $99 volt. I think there is a coupon code somewhere on BT. If you buy it you know that you are the only guy that peed in it! Laughing

Just out of curosity, why did you go with the Zipp?  I know they're better for racing but you planning to train with them too?  I shyed away from the high end wheels because of the sticker shock and wanted the PT for training.

This was my main concern. I was worried about dropping the $$ on that wheel and then using it to train on with the PT. The guy at wheelbuilder, (mitch or rich) assured me that the carbon wheel was fine to train on. my choice was to train on the zipp or buy 2 separate wheels. The folks at wheelbuilder were very helpful!!! I must have spent a combined 2 hours on the phone with him over several days picking his brain. I really wanted a carbon wheel.
Now, as Mark said, I'm gonna rip the universe apart by pairing it with a HED 3 up front.

Cool.  Have you had a chance ride it yet?  I'm an engineer so the geek factor of the PT is really fun.

Thanks, Todd.  Very tempting...

Did you buy a tubular or clincher 404?
