sand101 - 2011-03-01 10:15 PM Swim update:  I decided today was a sprints day.  I guess I was feeling masochistic.  After a great start to the session (1:11 100 and 2:35 200 in the drag suit - 2:35 is my best in quite a while) I hit 5 x 50 sprint, 50 recover at the end.  Started at :31 and faded to :33 at the end.  In a fast suit those times put me solidly down under :30, like :27.  That ain't half bad.  Heck, I could probably go to a master's meet and not completely embarrass myself.

On to thrashing myself on the trainer!

Those are awesome times......I'm dreaming of what it would be like to swim that fast.

No kidding, that's awesome!  Do you swim in a 50M pool or does that include turns?

Standard 25 yard (SCY) pool, so certainly faster than an Olympic 50m (1:11 = ~1:18 in a 50m pool).  Those times are in the drag suit (board shorts), so somewhat slower than in a good race jammer.  Jammers with lycra go away in chlorinated pools pretty quick, so I don't tend to wear them except for the rare "PR attempt days" which I do before big races.  For general practice, though, I don't care. The board shorts slow me down to the tune of 7sec./100 or so.

For some reason in the last couple weeks I have found a new rhythm, am able to reach out farther in the water, and get a better pull.

Swimming is like golf, guys.  Learn the swing and you can whale the crap out of the ball.  If Ian Woosnam can hit 300yd. drives, theoretically pretty much anyone can.  Same applies to the pool - learn the stroke and you can be fast.  Like almost as fast as the 13 year old girl in the next lane last week who dusted me. ;-)

BTW, Jason and Robert.  This Saturday's ride is the same as last week.  7:30 if you can make it.  Right now it looks like the rain will hold off until the afternoon.  Last week was a blast.

Look out for some Jammers from Speedo w/ the "+Endurance" logo. Not sure what the blend is, but mine held up all last year very well and seem to be doing good so far this year. Swim Outlet runs them occasionally for $35 but usually around $40-$45. Homewood Sports usually carries them in stock though.

I've got to get some new ones this week/weekend.  I think i've been flashing the folks at the pool in mine recently.  Mine have lasted about 6 months.  Thanks for the rec.

Sheep, Sand:  Vulcan Tri Groups Fanny Freeze is this Sunday.  Either of y'all thinking about it?

Thinking.  I have to get disposition from the big boss to skip church, though.

Ya.  They are all polyester - those things will last a long, long time.  Call me strange, but I actually like the board shorts in practice.  What I typically do is the last practice before I race I'll put on the fast suit and do a fast day.  I tell ya, the speed increase is hugely apparent and it feels like I'm flying through the water.  That is the day I'll try and set some pool PRs (and maybe even break down and do a flip turn or two - I pretty much do open turns all the time).  Big confidence boost going into a race.

What is this flip turn you talk of?  and how do you learn to do it?

Learning the flip turn is on my list to learn, just have NO IDEA how to get started.

I learned flip turns many eons ago.  I'm sure there are articles around here about how to learn them.  I would have no idea how to teach them.  I just do them.  I should do a lot more of them, but I don't.

I'm not good at them. I do them in my WU/CD sets, but I'm usually too oxygen deprived to do them during the main set and stick with open turns.

I used to use my running shorts in the pool as drag suits, but the chlorine did QUICK work of those shorts, so I got the endurance jammers. Maybe I should find some Walmart style board shorts and go.

I've done it by trial and error.  I don't have any real good advice here.

My "Masters Light" swim class is Thursday nights.  I've been meaning to do sets of 100 like you suggest but haven't gotten around to it.  We did the 4x50 "drop off" drill tonight.  Basically it's sets of 4x50 at different send off times and you just keep doing them until you can't anymore.  We did 9 sets of this, ie 1800 yds, and I thought I was going to die at the end.  I was pretty consistent throughout and pretty happy with my numbers.  But let me tell you, those 48 and 49 sec laps where a hell of a lot easier then the 48and 49 second laps at the end!  Oh, and you know the funny thing... my I was the only one in class to finish the whole drill and I was pretty much dead nuts consistent each lap and my instructor was giving me hard time because I was only breathing to one side!!

1:15 send off : 49,52,50,49
1:05 send off : 47,48,48,50

So you did every 50 pushing off every 1:00 or so?  Did you take a break between the sets of four?  Just curious.  Oh, and give you instructor the :finger: from me on the bilateral breathing thing.  That's silly.

My "thrash myself" drill last night was 5x100 sending off at 2:00, then 1:50 etc. down to 1:30.  Managed to hold 1:14-1:17 until the last one, then bombed to 1:21 or so.  Good workout, though.

Oh, Jason and Robert, I do think I am going Sunday morning.  Right now I have in my head to do the 20 mile bike and a 6-8 mile run.

Wow, both of these are great workouts! I do like the 5x100s personally

Corn - you should see some huge improvements if you keep sets like this up!

Sand - no dice on riding. I may get a run in though. My training class again is from 0900 - 1800. SUCKS!

Also, FYI. I made a couple of medicine balls this week (6# & 11#) and will make one more tonight. Super easy.

I bought a mini soccer ball and a small kickball. Used a tire patch kit, poked a hole, filled with sand and then tied off. Added some glue and a small piece of duct tape.

There's also a GREAT medicine ball workout in my logs from Fri if anyone is interesed. I'm going to definitely start adding those into the weeky schedule!

Todd,

Since you're the only one that did Jorge's cycling program, what did you think of it?  I started it and really like the first few weeks.  The reason I'm asking is that he offers fee based training plans that appear very similar to his cycling plan.  I've been emailing him and am seriously considering buying some of the plans.

I only did the 1st 8 weeks of the program. However, I definitely improved over those a weeks. FTP was up about 12 watts. He seems to be a good coach, and a nice guy. What type of training plan we talking here?

He offers and "iCoaching" service.  It appears that he has several different levels of training plans (for whatever distance you're doing) and tries to find the right level for you.  There isn't any log review or a lot of personal interaction (questions are via a closed forum) but every 4 weeks there is a feedback process where he reviews things and gives you the next four weeks of training (possibly at a different level).  It's not free but the price isn't too bad, about $50/month so you'd end up paying about $200 for an Olympic plan.  Way less then actually hiring a coach but a fair chunk of change nonetheless.

OK.  I won a free entry to the Double Oak or Powerman Duathlons.  I don't think I am up for Powerman, so was thinking about the Double Oak (2.5k, 20k, 2.5k).

Never done a du.  Racing strategy?

Why are you doing a duathlon?  I thought they only have them to make those of us who can't swim feel good about ourselves.  You're too good of a swimmer for that!
