Fred Doucette - 2011-01-09 4:51 AM Yes, the answer to my question was lower the seat, but only by a tiny bit. As James said a less common cause can be the seat to far aft. I have an 8 mile run on today, what about you folks, what's on tap for today?

Long ride for me.  Starting a new Oly plan today.  It calls for a whole 48 minutes on the bike.  Laughing  Think I'll ride just a bit longer than that!

On the schedule today is an hour run followed by an hour easy spin on the bike.

I'd say stay warm, but that's probably not realistic.  Have fun?

I've forsworn cold temp running this year.  It's nice to have that excuse on cold days like today!

TexasMPGal - 2011-01-08 9:12 PM Super looking bike, Randy, and with Di2, sweet!! So, today on the bike I was introduced to a whole new world of hurt--actual mountain like climbs. I was told it was a hilly route---I'm from TX, hills = something that takes a few minutes, you know 5-10 to get over, hurt a bit, and continue on--typically rolling.  In California, apparently, hilly routes mean riding through the MOUNTAINS and going several MILES uphill.  It took us 1:35 to go 20 miles--and I was actually near the FOP as I spun up the hill mountain at a good 8-9mph!!  I stayed strong the whole ride, which is good--but wow, miles of climbing is something new for me. It was in the low 40's when we started and I felt overdressed on the uphills as I was working hard and breaking a good sweat.  THEN, we hit the descents (with lots of serpentine like roads, which I found I DO NOT have good skills for either, at high speed at least) and I felt UNDERdressed as it was cold.  BUT wow did we get some absolutely AMAZING views as we looked out over the mountains to the west.  4000+ feet of climbing in 42 miles.  That's some good CdA training...the group was primarily training for CdA, so I hope to ride with them more.

Brittany sounds like you had a great and fun ride.  CA is defiantly a place you can climb those long mountainous climb.

I live in central PA and I love climbing.  While I can get in 8000-10000ft of climbing in a century ride, the longest grades are only 4-5 miles.  At the same time some of the shorter grades are up to 1 mile long.  the percent of those grades can be up to 15-22% which can be very challenging.

Bottom line I am jealous you have access to such long grades.

Great climb!

I've spent the weekend visiting family so not much training so far but did manage a few short runs with various people. Tonight will be an hour on the trainer all being well.

Got in an 8 mile easy run.  Its cold down here: 44 degrees with a feels like of 32. Yeah, I know thats not cold but it is for South Alabama.   Flexibility/stretching 30 minute DVD later today.  Part of my goal to get in 1 hour of yoga a week-trying to stay proactive on the stretching with hopes of injury avoidance.

My training this weekend got thrown out the window when this guy in Tucson decided to shoot 20 people and kill 6 of them. Since I work in TV news, we all went to work. The story got even bigger when one of our congresswomen and the Chief Federal Judge in Arizona were shot. The judge has died.

I'm not too worried about the training since my 1/2 marathon is next weekend. I'll get my workouts in this week and I'll do just fine next weekend. This sort of thing will happen from time to time with my job.

I'm hoping to get out early enough to get some type of training done today. We'll see.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. That is a sweet bike.

Todd, how incredibly stressful and sad. Sometimes training needs to take a back seat to real life and work. You are trained for your 1/2 Mary one run now doesn't make a big difference.

Rene, super job on your 11 miler today..negative split shows discipline and good pacing. Does that mean go for 1/2 Mary the end of the month?

Snowboarding sounds fun..smart to take recovery day. I find when I do something I haven't done something for a long time I often get pretty sore next day or two.

Randy, Easy 8 miler in real feel of 32 nice....cold is all relative. After being in MN for 2 weeks, MA feels so warm.  How'd the stretching go? I know for me if I don't stretch post run I feel it until I run and stretch again. What do you follow? I follow a Spinnerval Yoga for Triathletes DVD that I just do on my own as I've done it a couple years....there are nice 10-15' post swim, post bike and post run routines.

Graycat: Running with various people can be so fun..hope your trainer ride goes well tonight!

Fred: Not so fun to run with real temps below 10 at least you had others out there with you. We need to see a photo of you on your bike with the new fit to see if we can pick out the difference (not James) he probably already knows

Brittney: Those mountains you are climbing on regular basis will be so helpful come June at IMCdA.  8-9 mph can be speedy on some climbs.

Kathleen: How did your run and bike go?

Wow - great training weekend everybody!
I have been enjoying spending the weekend with some out of town friends - today was a little LT work on the track - 2x400 followed by 4x800. Finishing up today meant that I have officially hit every prescribed session for the past 3 months. This has included 23 two-a-days and 12 rest days. I feel really good about that.

@Todd: I am sure that being in the news biz, you are accustomed to such things, but I imagine that some events you never get used to. Good luck in your final week leading up to the IM - it is exciting that someone in the group has a race so soon!

@Randy: It has already been said - but I just wanted to chime in complete agreement: that is one beautiful rig! I hope you get years of great results riding it/him/her. FWIW, I have (I think) 9cm of drop from my seat to my pads - that is from memory - I will check when I get a chance. After testing, I decided on a slightly wider elbow pad placement which although creates a wider frontal area, it was slightly lower and more stable/comfortable than a narrow setup. If you can get in the wind tunnel it will eally help you make those kinds of if/then decisions.

@Brittany - awesome ride - others have told me that cresting the big hills at the FOP is a real confidence booster!

@James: Aw, I was just kidding about the torque wrenches. Although it took a while, I have finally come to accept/trust the fact that 3Nm really WILL keep my seat post in place...

@Kathy: I got a response back from the support folks at TP. They assured me that my data was my data, no matter who set of the account. They suggested if I ever have a problem accessing my account if I decide to stop or change coaches, I simply contact them directly via their support email. If you want access to your data, maybe you could try that? If you do, let me know how it goes. Glad to hear your knee is feeling better too - hope that continues.

@Steve: Sorry the logs still were not visible - they should be now to everyone here. Going forward I will also make my TrainingPeaks data available via a link in my BT daily logs - on the off chance anyone wants to see all the more in-depth technical metrics/spits/power/etc.

Neil: awesome improvement on the watts - it almost makes me want to retest. Almost....

Rene: fantastic on the long run - I cannot wait til I get to go long again!

@Randy - I read your post right before I headed to the track - like you, I think 30 degrees is cold. One of the things I love about this group is that it is very motivational to those of us that are a little more "climatically sensitive" to shut up and just get out there when we hear that the rest of you are running in 5 degree F temperatures. I will do my best to not get too excited when it is 70 degrees here in March.

School was supposed to start back up tomorrow, but due to an ice storm in the southeast the first day of class has been canceled. Mixed feeling about that; I was looking forward to being in Auburn tomorrow, just in case that actually win the national championship game - but I also look forward to being at home with friends to watch the game tomorrow night. I just heard on the news that "Atlanta is 'bracing' for the winter ice storm." So I am signing off now to "brace."

Here is to a great, safe and injury-free training week, everybody!

Todd-agree with Kathy that you are ready.  Sometimes those unplanned rest days do more for us long term than our planned training.

Kathy-I think that is the DVD I have.  It is a Spinnervals Yoga for triathletes Volume 1 "Flexible Warrior".  3 differerent sessions each about 30 minutes-power, balance and flexibility.  My kids got  a real laugh out of the "Flexible Warrior" title. 16 year old daughter will walk in while I'm doing it and the usual greeting is "you are such a freak".  Got the same response when she saw that I had posted a picture of my new bike on my Facebook page.  I told her "OMG you are not my BFF"   JK

Hope weekend was good!

Gorgeous bike pics Randy and Fred! (thanks for showing them)

Hey thanks so much James and Rusty for kind comments on my day-in-my-crazy-life post friday.

Brittany that sounds like a great ride Saturday...aaaah California, don't get me started.

Ran 9 miles on treadmill (wimped out on the cold) this am which feels good after rest day sat, thinking of Todd because had news on with the Arizona thing.

Did 30 min strength (I know I keep doing a fair amount of this! but read some article that Craig Alexander said when he stregthened his core he was so much better off,  so I figure I can't get my core too strong)

And glad you mentioned yoga, Randy and Kathy G, because threw in a hour of that too.... figure will have to probably phase that out eventually with time constraints enough to only S/B/R when in the hardcore IM training phase... do think yoga helps injury prevention though

Kate

Thankful for my relatively simple life when I hear some of the crazy things going on in the news.  Good luck Todd.

Congrats to everyone on all of those great workouts.  It sounds like lots of group members are banking those winter run miles!

And impressive run there Rusty hitting 3 mos of workouts!!

Does anyone have a swim skin? Are there any advantages of using a swim skin for the slower swimmer? IMTX won't be wetsuit legal. As a BOP swimmer any advantage in the swim would be welcome. Most of the races here stop being wetsuit legal after May 1st. A swim skin would probably get more use than a wetsuit for in state races.
Which swim skin would you recommend?

Catwoman,

Skin suit are great especially in salt water environment were jelly fish could be encountered.

To be honest and if your are a self proclaimed bop swimmer (imo) use the money for a skin suit and have a swim coach look at your swim stroke.  He/she can maybe see any problems in your technique and give you pointers.  That I think would be a better return of investment.

Yep looks like most had a great weekend of training, I did.  I even learned some anger management.  Pool equity is known to most all that regularly swim but not known to all.

Have a Great Day everyone.
