I found this really cool web-site that provides water and air temp in the lake of my next tri. I was planning to tri swimming outdoors this weekend, but after checking the temp I'm thinking not.
8.8c - would you swim?

Mark, I have gone in water as cold as 41*F but would not advise it!!! I will say that temps of 50* are tolerable for about 35 minutes. Here are a few things I have found helpful:
Neoprene caps are useful for those who dont mind the strap across the chin. I dont like it. I double cap with a silicone cap( thicker) and then the race cap.
WEAR earplugs. Cold water in ear canal can lead to dizziness.
Get a pair of neoprene booties. The light ones.Blue seventy makes some good ones for about $15. They will save you!!! They are USAT sanctioned for colder water
You can carefully put vaseline on your face AFTER you get your goggles on. The vaseline prevents the cold water from penetrating the pores of the skin on your face. IF you get it near your eye sockets you will loose the seal on your goggles. This should be practiced before race day. Be careful not to get it on yur wetsuit.
DO NOT get in the water to warm up if the water is cold before the race. It will lower your core temp and make it hard for you when you get in and race.
Pee in your wetsuit!
I have done races at 54*. It takes about 10 minutes for yur body to adapt. Make sure you have layers for the bike. You will be cold when you start to ride and will want to dress warmly. For IMAZ I took fuzzy tube socks and cut out the toes. I used them as disposable arm warmers. They felt great!!!! The water temps for IMAZ was 60*. 2.4 miles in water that cold leaves you pretty chilly!!!!
Hope this helps
