That guy can swim!

I'm obsessed with him, lol! He's 'that person' I would probably faint if I ever met!

Who is it?  I didn't realize he was "someone".

Funny.  He lives in Baltimore (Michael Phelps, not the guy in the video).  You can come visit and we can camp out in front of his houseSmile.

It's still a billion degrees in Baltimore.  After my painful bike ride yesterday, I did a sad, slow run today.  I wanted to run 5 but I stopped after 3.  Actually I stopped after 2.5 and walked the last half mile.

I'm doing a half ironman at the end of June, in West Virginia.  I'm guessing it will be hot.  I figured I should take advantage of the heat and do some training in it.  I've discovered training in the heat isn't the best training.  It is more like trying to survive.  So, should I continue to "practice" in the heat or go to the gym?  I'm really starting to worry about the race.  I couldn't even run 5 miles in the heat.  How am I going to do 13?

Christy, I've heard that you need to adjust your pace to like 1 or 2 minutes less per mile when it gets super hot. You can't expect to run the same pace when it's 90 as when it's 65 outside. Personally (and I have no science for this), I think you need to condition your body to run in the heat if you think it will be hot outside for your race. Right now - our first hot streak of the year in Chicago - I am huffing and puffing in the heat in Chicago. But I know that by mid-June I'm usually back to speed workouts and running my usual pace. There's an adjustment period. Stay outside. Slow down. Take frequent water breaks. You can do it!

Hey guys

Had a good couple of training days on the bike, rode 35 on Sunday and 50 on Monday with a 3 mile run. Took yesterday off, well deserved.   I am going to try to fit a training run in today, but schedule is very tight.

Sprint tri this weekend, 5K run, 10 mile bike and .25 mile swim (yes, its backwards in Naples.  Wish me luck I am trying to break an hour.  Last two years my time has been 1:05:00 or so.

Let the Florida runner deal with the heat question lol

I run in heat all the time, summer is unbearable even in early morning hours.  You have to slow down and drink lots.  I ran the Chicago Marathon in 2007 when it was 95 degrees and they ran out of water (you probably heard about it, it was a mess).  Anyway during Chicago I kept telling people to drink and most of the ones who did not train in heat were passing the water stops early and paid for it later.  You have to drink lots and early but don't become water logged. Also were light clothes, don't try to sweat off pounds, and lots of cool drinks to recover after.  It's rough by you can do it.

Hey all,

Sorry I've been absent the last week or so. Life has been interfering with training the last few weeks. Graduate school (condensed Summer classes), wedding planning, work, and just life in general really put a damper on everything.

Work mainly has been sapping my energy, I was doing 2x workouts a day sometimes, but now I just want to go home after work (and training before work, mainly swimming or weights) and relax.

I started to slowly pick back up, and have a had a solid weak of training the last week or so. Did a great 45 minute strength circuit today, got the heart rate going pretty good, and felt really solid (read: strong) after the workout was done. Have a group run scheduled for later today.

A few points to catch up on, in no particular order:

As Rob said, running in the heat (in Florida) is not fun. I try to schedule a lot of my training during the early-morning or late-afternoon hours (6pm) to try to avoid the heat and humidity.

However, I do try and do a shorter run during the week in the middle of the day. Focus on keeping my heart rate slow, and drinking lots of water. I started to run with a fuel belt with (2) 7 oz bottles. However, those go pretty quick in a 2-3 mile ride in the middle of the day. I also try and wear a stop at a shower at a beach access to put water in my hat to cool myself off (to simulate a aid station in a race). This is key for me, but it only helps for a little bit.

In reference to cyclists being cliquey, I can't even begin to describe how well I understand.

Coming from a competitive surfing and Mixed Martial Arts background, I understand competition and how a lot of time people's Ego will get in the way of being personible. The guise that most put on is intolerable, even in more 'mature' athletes. For instance, I went on a 35 mile ride on Sunday. The road I travel on is littered with cyclists most of the morning. I try to make an attempt to acknowledge a passing rider (going the opposite direction) with either a nod or wave, however it seems that the guys on true road bikes, will not wave or anything. However, I have noticed something interesting, in which those who have a Tri-specific bike, or one that looks as if it is Tri-"tuned" (aerobars, etc) are more likely to wave. Probably some uncanny hypothesis, but that is just what I noticed.

Don't get me wrong, Triathletes are very cliquey as well. However, I have been trying to make an effort to speak to people who have a USTA sticker, or a tri-club sticker, or jersey for the club I am a apart of. So far, most have been receptive. However, a few have not been.

<Start Sappiness> Luckily we have each other in these group to learn from, and be accountable to.

<End Sappiness>

Anywho, hope everyone's training keeps up. I am going to be out of town this weekend for a friend's wedding, but am bringing my bike and running shoes and planning on knocking out some solid workouts. My next race is June 11th, so I am definitely trying to get motivated to improve on my time.

Thanks Deb, doing tri's backwards is kind of fun I've done this race about a half dozen times and love it.  I don't think I could do a longer tri backwards, knowing that a long swim is out there would scare me to death.   Of course it is in my backyard where I train so I am familiar with course, and know a lot of people who run it.  It will be fun.

Why thank you! It's our first hot week here and I'm running outside tonight. You know what really bothers me running in the heat? Blisters, foot swelling and chafing. Any magic tricks you have for that are much appreciated. Running in heat is a whole different ball game for us Yankees.

I second that! Good to hear from you, nice job on getting back into your training!  Last night I was literally yelling at myself to get my workout in. Sometimes it's so rough and the couch is just so darn comfortable. But I always feel better after I work out.

I'm arguing with myself right now! The daycare at the gym opens at 4:30.  I have 2 hours to talk myself into going.  I'd really like to blow up my kids inflatable pool and just sit in it for the rest of the day.

khharms - 2011-05-28 9:33 AM I feel like a fool.

Cycling really has a large learning curve, I'll be the first to admit.  I've been cycling my whole life in some way or another, but I still feel lost with it all sometimes.  Don't worry about this at all, I give you big props for getting out there.  Hopefully, even though it wasn't best experience you learned some good stuff for next time (yes, pump, flat fixing tools are necessary...no one ever said cycling was cheap, unfortunately ).

Do you have a tri club or cycling club in the area?  My tri club started a series of beginner rides this year that are really great.  They do the rides at an relaxed pace and also cover some need-to-know area with each ride (gear you need, changing flats, safety, etc).  Lots of people have been going because jumping in with experienced cyclists is intimidating (even for me who's been doing it for years).

I joined a cycling club through meetup.com - I am going on a beginner ride this Saturday. Unfortunately it's not a road ride, it's apparently on terrain, but I'll take what I can for now. Plus I can probably get some tips about changing tires, etc.

There is a tri club here, but they require a ton of volunteer time at other events. That's great and all, but at this point in my life, I don't have the extra time for that.

Crazy...mine lets me be as lazy as I want!

Christy

Even if you have no science, you are correct, scientifically speaking .  Your body must expend extra effort to keep itself cool.  The good thing is that like everything else, the more you do it, the better you get at it.  So if you can train in the heat, you will slowly get better at dealing with the heat (and the stress to your body, i.e. what causes it to feel harder, will decrease).  But the trade off is that if you need to be at a certain HR or RPE, your training stress will be lower even though your overall stress (training + heat) is the same.  So your workout won't "technically" be as good.

That's why lots of people do both.  Get key workouts in at as cool a time as possible (long runs, intervals, etc) while trying to do easier workouts (long rides, easy runs) in the heat.  For instance, I did a lot of biking inside this winter.  For my interval sessions, I used as much fans and light clothing, becuase without that I couldn't have hit my targets.  But for the longer rides at lower intensity, I wore a heavy shirt and didn't use a fan (pure torture!).  I was trying to aclimatize (sp?) to the heat over the winter so when summer and my A race (usually a very hot race) came around, I'd be ahead of the game.

Back from a 5 mile tempo run (on the treadmill).  I wasn't about to push two kids in a jogging stroller in this heat.  My plan was 10 min warm up, 8 min hard (8:20 min/mile), 2 min easy (10:00 min/mile).  Did it once.  Thought I would die.  Decided 8:20 wasn't doable.  Tried 9:00.  Ended up doing some kind of random hard 2 min (who knows how fast) 3 min easy.  I was just doing what I could to get it done.  Feel good now that it's over.  I almost quit after 30 min.  Glad I didn't.

Glad you didn't quit. Good job on the run! I went out in the heat today because my tri this weekend is in the heat. Everyone keeps telling me I have to get acclimated.
