I don't know how it is normally, but in illinois, they will run the full tri even if the water is 55 degrees . . . NOT.  Racine 70.3 is known for a horribly cold swim. Is there a rule on when they would eliminate the swim weather-wise?  Is your guys water still freezing and you have local tris in the next several weeks?  What will you do?

Just wondering with the half marathons . . . when does it stop hurting or being sore for days after.  How many do I have to do???

I am really enjoying these though . . . If the weather does not warm, I may skip the early tris (water is still freezing) and do a few more halfs.

If you race each half marathon all out, they'll never stop hurting the day after.  Generally you hurt for longer if the course is hilly.  If you don't go all out, you should be able to recover pretty quickly.

For me, I'm always in compression tights post-race, I try to keep my legs up and I'm beginning to play around with ice baths as well.

No local tris until June here.  I've always swam in open water.  Coldest water ever was probably about 58 degrees or so.

Well, I didn't run all out, but certainly pushed it harder the last 3 miles and definitely the last mile. I think lack of training was a big factor, but I do need to get full leg compression gear.  I only have some for my shins and calves.

Just thinking about 2012 . ..  doing 1 1/2 mary per month.  How cool would that be.  Just enjoying so far . ..

I have the Zoot Ultra Compression Recovery Tight, which I LOVE.  Pretty much wear them all wekkend when I'm not running or biking.  Well worth the money.

Really???

We have lots of them here in Illinois, especially for the early tris - same as indoor tris really.  They usually set a number of laps to be completed (usually sprint only it is 8-10 laps or so) and time you, then you run out to transition outside and finish the race outside.  You have to give an estimated time to finish those laps when registering so they know how to seed people in waves.

Wetsuits are not allowed in these.

For kids triathlons, they may snake the younger kids up and down the lanes til finish, then send them outside.  My nephew has done this.

To me it seems it would be difficult to go all out in a pool swim with tons of other people in the lane.  What if you underestimated your ability?  Would you be stopping and waiting to pass others all the time?  It just looks so chaotic to me.  Not that an OWS doesn't look chaotic to me, too

Compression: there is a reason why people with circulatory disorders wear them, they work.  i actually bought a couple pairs of black compression socks to wear with suits

Ice Baths: they work too.  they hurt, but they work.  if you access to an ice whirlpool, that is the way to go.  had one in college, along with a coach, training room staff, etc.  Too bad varsity sports doesnt exist for adults (other than pros or the uber wealthy or childless)

HMs: you should hurt after you run one.  you should hurt after any race you race.  Heck, after a 5K I feel like I am going to yack and/or have a stroke.  For me, I actually find the HM a fairly easy disatanch to recover from.  I am not fast enough to race it right near threshold, so the 2/3ds of half of the race is under threshold and the last 4 miles ore so is at redline (whatever that is after running 9 miles).  I usually find the next day I am sore, but with an easy spin of the legs the next day I am fine.  Personally the HM/20K is my favorite distance road race.

Bryan's Race Report: nothing better than a swim into the sun.  its like when you are biking and you have a headwind both ways, never understood how that works.  Great race.

Me: Run was supposed by 14 mile LSD, but i didnt have the time, so I ran about 8 miles today at slightly slower than HM goal pace after a little warm up.  My lungs are good, my muscular endurance is not there.  I suppose the answer is bike and run more and do so for about 3 years.  I just dont have the time to do any more than i am doing .  maybe if i think cross fit will provide me with the ME i am missing it will.  Meh.

Heading to Vegas in thursday morning for meetings.  Staying at Caesars, i'm goign to run the strip friday and saturday, shoudl be amusing watching the drunks, gamblers and prostitues walking home at 5 AM when I'm running. Caesar's looks like it has a bunch of nice pools, hopefully i can swim in one.  They also appear to have a nice spa.  I may try and treat myself to a desperately needed massage

I should have never got out of bed this morning.  Got up at 5:05, planned to ride 5:30-7:00.  Couldn’t find my Garmin, and it’s always by the computer.  Finally find it on the floor, battery dead.  Kids must have grabbed it.  Do a quick 15 minute charge, get dressed, hop on bike.  1.5 miles into ride I notice I forgot my HEED (drink).  Turn around, get home, and lose all motivation.  Got up for no reason. (but, anyday you wake up is a good day, right?)

Then……..get kids ready to go, get in car, battery is dead.  Someone left my lights on, and it definitely wasn’t me.  Had to call friend to jump start car.  Of course, Cole missed the bus, so had to drop him off at school, and was late for work.

Then I come in, and find out my assistant actually gave her two week notice to move away with the new boyfriend.  HELLOOOO!!! She also took her last 4 days of vacation she had left this week.  You put in your 2 weeks notice, then use your vacation time up???  I understand technically it’s her time to use, but morally, it’s wrong.  At least use your time up, then give your notice.

So I am heading home now to make up for the ride this morning, if I can find the energy.  Sorry for venting.  Crazy day today! Laughing

Great report, Kelly. You should be pleased with the result as your really don't train for short course, it's a very different animal.

Woke up to pounding rain. It has stayed around all day. Got a good swim in focusing on stroke. Was thinking of running, but rain and hail kinda discouraged it. Did get my painting finished that I am donating to a high powered charity auction. The one I had planned to donate sold last weekend for $500 which is always a treat. I have not invested in compression stuff, but I have been having a problem with my right calf so I bought some diabetic compression socks today. I have been wearing them as I have stood at my easel for four hours and they have seemed to help.

Kelly & Bryan - I enjoyed reading both race reports.  Makes me kind of excited (and sick to my stomach) about my first race in just under two weeks.

Nice race both of you - very inspirational!

My work is putting a team together for the City to Surf comp in August. I have to decide if i can run 12km or a half marathon. Running is easily the worst part of my training though i am definatly improving. I can now run 3km but im still slowing to catch my breath at times. I want to push myself but i know i also need to be realistic and build up to events. I need some honest opinions to put it all into perspective, would i be pushing too hard to sign up for the half marathon? Or should i set my goals a little more realistic and do the 12km run, perhaps pushing for a half marathon later in the year?

ooh i have another question! Given races are generally run on pavement/concrete, should training also be done on those? My back prefers running on grass but I dont want to give my system a massive shock by training on grass then racing on  concrete.
