Subject: Loving my 910xt so far....m

but it would certainly help if I really had a clue how to use it- lol. it's too much watch for me right now but I'm reading and looking for tutorials etc, cause I'm determined to get the most out of it that I can. I swam with it today and yesterday and I'm loving the stroke count and swolf score. I spent 20min. yesterday just trying to beat my swolf score. Dh finally reminded me that I wasn't really doing my intended workout- lol. I still don't have the data fields and capabilities all figured yet though cause I've never had a gps/hrm watch so it's all totally new to me. I haven't used it for running yet because I haven't been able to run outside since it came and I have to do that to calibrate it or something of that nature. But I really am amazed at all it can do.

It's huge on my arm though. I cracked up laughing when I put it on. I feel like I have an ipad on my arm- lol. Dh says I'm crazy but that's never been in question- haha.

Hey Everyone.  Just a quick check-in.  Been focusing on running with swim and bike workouts starting next week.  Woot woot!  Looking back over my running log from last year I realize that I spent a good deal of 2011 complaining about the heat.  Northern Cali gets hot.  So I'm trying to be grateful for the cool weather.  It's funny that we're talking about running/racing tunes because all my runs prior to today have been sans tunes.  I'm trying to get used to the idea that my races will feature a soundtrack of me wheezing and panting and drooling and whimpering.  However, today I forgot my Garmin and needed my i-phone, so I put on my headphones and treated myself to . . . wait for it . . . Mastodon's "Crack the Skye" in its entirety.  Yep.  Prog metal.  That, some hip-hop, some funk, and some classic rock tend to keep me on the road.  Here are a few off the top of my head that have come in handy on recent runs:

Phish, "The Divided Sky" and "Time Turns Elastic"

Run DMC, "Rock Box"

Ted Nugent, "Great White Buffalo"

Korn, "Freak on a Leash"

Allman Brothers, "Jessica"

Rush, "Spirit of Radio"

Anything by James Brown.

Oh - and an embarassing pleasure that works amazingly well on the road is Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Light."  I've gotten MILES out of that one.

Props to all you folks getting it done in the cold weather, in the pool, with injuries and time conflicts and family priorities and all else.  I'm consistently inspired by reading all you do - from the vets to the newbies.  And I'm clearly in good company.

Cheers!

-Kent

Kent, I grew up in Northern Cali-Clayton to be exact. Oh yes it can get hot! I miss that weather out there, but the heat sucks no matter what...Thanks for the kind words. Sounds like you are ramping up your training nicely, keep it up!

Music is a controversial issue on this board (well isn't everything). I like it when I am by myself, but some people don't like it. I definitely had to make sure I could run without it when I started tri' because obviously it is a no no...it does help when I am by myself, that is for sure! I'll have to check out everyone's suggestions, my stuff is a bit stale these days...

It was raining at the start of my first marathon last year and I decided to leave my mp3 at home (not water proof) and was really worried I would not be able to finish without the music pushing me along, but I am so glad it happened that way...it was great being able to gather in the whole ambiance of the situation which I think I would have definitely missed out on with the headphones.

On a side note, my post was not intended to make any judgements about what people choose to spend their money on, just how I try and keep my costs down. If it came across as "judgey" I apologize.

OMG, I think this is the least judgey group of triathletes on BT!!! Hang onto that humility and you will never go wrong!

LOVELOVELOVE the saving money tips...I am going to add some later, but I gotta do that mommy s*** right now!

Carry on crew!

x2- I didn't take it judgey at all. I love seeing where others save money or cut costs. Great topic adn I enjoyed your post. Hope I didn't sound defensive in my reply about how I paid for my bike and 910xt  cause I surely didn't feel that way. Just offering suggestions on how to get some of the more expensive toys without hitting your actual family budget. I love getting ideas on where to save- Right up my alley- lol.

Not at all, but sometimes things sound different in my head than the way I communicate them. Those who know me call it Tedspeak so it was a preemptive explanation of my post to the group

On the topic of NOT saving $,  Registering for races you don't end up doing is a good way to throw away some cash. I had to bag my race this weekend cause my daughter has a real nasty middle ear infection. My wife works Saturday mornings and my kids were gonna sleep at a friends house Friday night so I could run on Saturday and they wouldn't be left home alone. My lil girl's definitely not gonna be up for the sleepover so I'm staying home with her. Looks like we're bagging the VT skiing as well. May try and go some place closer on Sunday or Monday if she's feelin better. I'm still planning on trying to get a 10 mile training run in to keep the commitment to myself...I know it's weird but somehow makes me feel like I didn't quit on the race.

On the plus side, I was able to transfer my registration to a friend of mine and a BT member who has really helped me alot over the last year. Very cool of the RD to let us do that.

Oh NO, so sorry about your girl! And props to the RD for allowing the transfer. That is NOT the norm, and if I were you, I would consider posting that story either in your state forum, or in Tri Talk to alert others to the awesomeness of the RD! You will be paying him/her back with lots of free good publicity.

Hope you get your 10 and skiing in anyway (I bet you will).

UGH sorry to hear this Ted    Hope she feels better, and you manage to get some skiing in somehow.

Dang this winter season seems to to be the toughest that I remember for people RE: sickness etc.   Everyone seems to be getting sick!   And hard to shake stuff.  it's everywhere.

I so agree with you on this!   especially in big events   I will leave the Ipod at home.   Soaking up the atmosphere/ambiance is what I'm looking to do.  I like hearing the various sounds of the event.   I can listen to music anytime.    Training  sure.  But even then I rarely use music.      Important to note, that in Triathlon  headphones are not allowed.   (well USAT events anyhow)

Such an amazing group we have here!!

I'm going to sign off here shortly and do not have the time tonight to respond to much of what has been posted here lately.

BUT  I've read it, and thinking about you all.

With all the activity  its intimidating to 'catch up'    I hope that no one ever feels left out or anything.   If you have missed a few days.   No worries, just hop back in and think nothing of it.    I'm really hoping the group stays together for a long time.   I want to see y'all succeed/progress throughout the race year.

"night!

What kind of pooch o you have?

She's a mixed breed- half yorkie half maltese. She's a fluffy furball and thinks she's the guardian of the house. We love her to death but she's mine and my son's dog. Of course we are the dog lovers of the house and I'm sure she knows that. DH actually does love her but if it wouldn't be for me, he would never have gotten a dog. I keep trying to talk him into a second one but it's not working. Not sure queen sheeba aka Zoey would like it much either- lol.

Ted,

It's raining here (1h30 north of Stowe), so my thinking is that they are not getting much snow in Stowe or MRG. Don't think its going to be great ski conditions. If it turns out you can't make it up to VT, doesn't look like you'll miss much...

So yesterday, I got some coaching from a trainer at my gym (not my regular pers.trainer) on Swimming! Yay! I can't believe how much difference her tips made in my form! I found out she does triathlons and also coaches Team in Training tri so I asked her to give me some swim tips and it was so great.  Even more importantly, she was so encouraging and positive about where I was at and where I could get to with more practice.  Between her and you guys here, I know I can do this

That's great. It's amazing how just a few key changes can make such a difference. I know you can do it as well. If I can do it, anyone can-lol. It always impresses me to hear stories like this. Obviously this person has a passion for the sport and is willing to share her talents. That is one of the things I like so much about this sport. Kudos to both of you.

HI Gang,  I haven't felt well the last few days, and not sleeping well either.  Hence, training suffered.  Great reading all the cost savings.  I'm seriously watching what I spend.  House is in foreclosure and income is way down.  After I bought the new shoes, that will be it for a while.  I'm glad I feel I'm a good swimmer and I'm happy working on my running and cycling.  I've made the decision that I will enter a race close to the last minute because money is so tight and I don't want to risk loosing $$'s if I don't go.  I may enter fewer ones, but my goal is to enter, at the very least, the one that will be 10 miles from home.

Tom, hang in there. I'm a real estate agent and see a lot of people in your situation, you can come out of it ok, it's good to have a goal like triathlon to work towards. It's hard to train when you're not feeling great, take it easy and get right back into it, you're doing great so far!

Yes hang in there Tom!    Its very hard to train with all the stress.  On the other hand it really helps with stress!   Sleep is so important.  I know its hard,  I struggle with sleep issues.     You are a positive person and I think you have the right idea.         I agree with Yvonne  you are doing really well!

Tom

Here to support you.

Anytime...

Keep on with your training, it's the best source of relieving the tension, no doubt.

For those of you struggling in the water, here is a thread for you.

Not exactly OWS panic or pushing too hard panic, but I really liked the guys attitude. It was a combo of returning to the pool and returning here for more encouragement.

What do you think? I wonder how many people give up on triathlon because they couldn't get past a swimming problem. I'm pretty stubborn and I tend to give up on the pool when I am at a plateau.

I guess I just really liked the aspect of keeping on trying and coming back here for advice and motivation. I believe just coming on BT and logging and participating can serve to keep people motivated to continue training...that's what's so great about the mentor program...it gives newbies a safe place to post while they get comfortable with BT.

Sounds corny, but it is so true...

Have a nice night y'all,

Q

He does have a really great attitude.  Not unlike the people here.      BT is great this way like you said.    The logging feature  really helped me understand how others trained.

I hung around BT for a while, and saw how other people would get through training/things/drama in their lives by way of their logs.   I would compare mine to theirs and see how they would train for the same event.   That told me if I was slacking off/doing well etc.     I was able to ask questions and get more comfortable.    It took me some time to make the adjustments'/efficiency in my life schedule to accommodate the   extra training time that was necessary for me to reach my goals.

The friends/inspires and  checking up on each others logs really helped me to want to train more.   I would think when I was at the pool.  "well this person did this and that person did that,  and I KNOW  I'm going to hear about it from this friend.      All of this combined is powerful stuff.

Logging training and visually seeing the peach days versus the yellow (its yellow if you have not trained but log some comments)      sometimes knowing ugh not another yellow day on my calendar makes the diff on getting some training in or not.    I like watching the training time/ mileage   add up over the course of the month.     I hate it when the month turns over and everything is back to zero.

You know much of the above sounds a lot like one of the entries in Quincy's blog.   Which when I read it, was the exact way that I feel about it.   (Maybe Q will post it?)

BT is awesome!

This discussion seems like a good opportunity to come clean with the group and re-introduce myself.....Hi, I'm Ted and I'm the cheapest "triathlete" on earth. Nice to meet you all.

So I struggle with spending $ on myself...more specifically tri related spending. Seems like my girls were born just yesterday then I suddenly turned around and they were 10. I really try to make the most of this small window I have with my kids before they realize I'm an embarrassment to them and they start asking me to drop them off a block away from the movies so their friends don't see me(which is right around the corner). So we try and take 3 vacations a year together and I always weigh any large purchases against that.

Two of the races I wanted to do this year required travel; Mont Treblant 70.3 and either the Philly or Marine marathon. I didn't want 2 of our vaca's to revolve around me so I decided to travel to a fall marathon and do Mont Treblant next year.

All that being said, here's some of the things I do to save $

Volunteer at races: The RD's around here offer credits for future races when you work an event. I saved ~ $500 dollars last year on race fees by volunteering and will probably save that much this year as well. It also is a great way to learn/share knowledge at races. I typically work transition and get alota good info from the peeps at the larger races. In the smaller races, I come across alota folks doing there first race who are extremely nervous and receptive to any encouragement and limited advice I can provide. This, I find extremely rewarding.

Ride an old school steed: (hmmmm, Double entendre alert) This is where I'm most conflicted. I ride a 1983 Motobecane Grand Record steel frame road bike that was the sh!!t when I bought it as my 15 year old self. Titus tubing, shimano 600ex components, etc, love the retro bike but seriously, it's 30 years old. On the other hand, is it worth 2k (week skiing with the family) to be incrementally faster when not a single person will know the difference but me? That's the dilemma. So far, for me the answer is no but........

Training Gear: With the exception of really cold weather, the compression gear at Target and Walmart works really well for me. Under 20 degrees, UA gear is definitely worth the $.

Nutrition: This is highly personal but I find that PB on mini bagels, fig newtons, fresh fruit, etc work really well. I also try and use what's provided on the course when possible. Of course I make sure I have no problem w/any of this in training prior to race day. Also stocking up on bulk Gels/etc at superstores when on sale can save alot of scratch.

I'm sure many others will have a different take on much of this which is cool. I just wanted to share  a few things that work for me based on my priorities and circumstances. I'd love to hear everybody else's thoughts on being a "Frugal Triathlete"

Ted,

Actually I am right there with you. I've just never been one to not be frugal. My theory is that I work too hard for my money, and like you dh and I like to travel with our family. Not that we are able to do it a ton, but family fun is important to us.

I buy things on sale. Like you I get work out gear from Target or JCPenney. We do have an Academy Sports around the corner and I check their clearance racks often. I do get quite a bit of Nike and UA workout clothes for either 9.88 or 4.88. Last week lucked up into Nike running shorts for 2.88 a pair. Bought 2 for me and 4 for my 9 year old. We're set for awhile. ;-)

I did spend on my bike but I saved for almost a year to buy it and asked for any of my gifts that year to be donations towards my bike. Birthday, anniversary, Christmas, etc. And I have a small part time business selling hair bows. I did a few extra sales and put half the money to my bike fund and the other half to our vacation fund.

As for my 910xt, originally I was supposed to get it with money I won from a fitness challenge at the gym. That money ended up being needed for tires for my son's truck so I thought I wasn't getting one. My dh surprised me for Christmas by using some of our Am Ex rewards points and ordered me one. It cost us nothing out of pocket. And my cardiologist really was pushing me to get one, he didn't want me in another spin or cardio class without it. So it was needed although I do know I could have gotten one less expensive and still met my needs so I realize it's a luxury as well. But as I said we didn't pay any actual money for it.

Dh and I have been through him being laid off twice, me having cancer twice and having to be out of work for 2 and 3 months each time, and losing a child and all the associated medical bills and yet financially we have always been fine. It's because we live well within our means and choose wisely how we spend our money. In other words we are very frugal. And we too realize how precious and fast this time with our children is. Mine were born yesterday- I'm sure of it- yet one is a grown woman (19 about to be 20) and another is a grown man ( 18 about to be 19). And my baby is 9. She should still be in newborn sizes if you ask me.

I love your volunteer suggestion. We've volunteered for races but didn't even know to ask about reduced entry fees. Thats a great way to save money and learn. Great suggestion.

So let me reintroduce myself- I am Shelly another frugal triathlete- lol.

Wow Shelly, after what you've been through, I'm thinking nobody appreciates their family time more than you. You are clearly a very strong person.

On a side note, my post was not intended to make any judgements about what people choose to spend their money on, just how I try and keep my costs down. If it came across as "judgey" I apologize.

You know its interesting.    People come to BT and Triathlon  often  to learn how to become an Ironman/woman.

The people in this group already are already Iron (people?)  of life!

ALRIGHT Alright!   Settle down people!   lol   we need a comedy break.

This fits the bill on two levels.

There is an element of frugality, as it is a used item found on Craigslist.

Its also about Yoga.

Ok I'll be quiet for a sec.    Check this link out.  You will not regret it.

I haven't been dominating the airwaves like usual. I had a rare and wonderful thing happen today. I got home from my 'aqua-jogging, or yogging', cooked up some crack cakes and to my wonder, my husband got his tools out and started working on our closet (one of the three main choke points in my house). I quickly put the kid crack TV on infinite loop and we kicked that closet's azz...so please forgive me for not being my usual runhermouthallthefreakingtime kind of girl. Here's the post I think Dave was talking about...this was before I met all of you...I was so excited, isn't it cute???

One of my favorite websites in the world is Beginner Triathlete (BT for short).  I log my workouts there, and about 95% of everything I've learned about triathlon has been from the forums there. The most amazing part of this "triathlon hive mind" is the Winter and Spring Mentor Groups. Basically folks who have been hanging around long enough volunteer to "show the ropes" to a new crop of wannabe triathletes.

Like any topic specific website/forum the same questions get asked over and over again, the same debates rage unabated, and a host of "the usual suspects" hangs out waiting for the next interesting thing to happen.

What sets BT apart from most other special interest websites is the mentor groups. They are cozy little learning cocoons where new guys can ask questions without worrying about looking dumb. But there's more to it than just a safe place to ask questions....you sort of get a built in little group of friends...you recognize a post by someone in your group so you are more likely to join in the conversation...you follow someone's daily path through a training routine and a race or two, and you realize you can easily do the same thing, or more...you do a race and you have all of these people who are excited for you because they've been following along with you.

Some of them have become my friends 'in real life.'

Some of these people are more real to me than Facebook friends I actually know 'in real life.'

Ok, that's weird in a 'social networking shouldn't be that profound' kind of way.

But that's just a little bit of why I LOVE BT.

And because it's free, and because I have just taken and taken and taken, and because I do appreciate everything I've learned from the site, I have 'applied' to be a mentor for the Winter 2012 Mentor Program!

I have some top secret plans for my mentor group (which I've dubbed QuincyF's Magical Mys-tri Tour for Newbies). Stuff I haven't seen in any other mentor groups. Dancing girls, ninjas rappelling from the ceilings, David Hasselhof. It's gonna be great.

Tom, the good news is, working on the engine is free! I am in the same boat as far as entering races...I can't begin to figure out how my body is going to be acting, so if that means giving up a race that sells out to avoid losing the entry fee, so be it.

Totally off touch but I have to share this moment with all of you. For all that do not know me, I weighed 304 back in October and was diagnosed with diabetes. Being a nurse I see the horrors of it and I had 2 options. 1) let the disease control me or 2) control the disease as much as possible. I choose to control it, I have lost over 70 lbs so far and yesterday bought my first shirt size large and it fits perfectly. I am so happy about that. Now back to our normal training!

Congratulations, that is great news Peter! I believe weight loss is a kickstart for a lot of people to do lots of other things in their lives...positive change begets positive change! Congrats!
