Finally, I am off to LA tomorrow to do my half marathon on Sunday. First one ever. I am shooting for  1:59.99 or better! A couple free beers at the end will also help with motivation as I have read they have run out in the past. Over 20,000 people running, that is crazy!

Fly back Wednesday.

have a great race! I have never done a race that big. I hope it is wild.

Great job. Consider when you will start taking it easy, big gains come quick but if you keep on chasing them you risk injury.

Well, Things are well.  I got 5 hours sleep Monday night on two beers for hockey night.  This is a small victory for me.  When I woke up, I'd only gained .2.  I had a rest day for training, followed by work and grad school from 6-9 at night.  I only got 5 more hours last night as I went to bed too late and woke up to a 4:40 swim and sprint training.

I swam well.  I did my long swim.  How's that go Darren, "slow is fast?".  I swam a mile in 37:30, and continued and did 2000yds in 45:30.  This is 2:16/100.  That's awesome for me as I just started swimming and was one of those sink before you get to the end of the pool guys.  I still have a long way to go, but I'm heading in the right direction.  I have a better attitude about the pool since I started doing sprint workouts a couple of weeks ago.

I finished off with a sprint 8 workout on the suspension trainer.  I don't know if this is of any benefit as of yet, but I'll see in a few months if my mile times get faster.

I woke up this at 188.9 this morning, but it's great to see that my highs do not go over 190 anymore.  My goal is to be 186 at weeks end.

I'm enjoying training, I'm sore as hell, but starting to see some results in my times, and that's encouraging.

Thanks for posting all your stories, everyone is so unique, I enjoy reading all your successes.  Hope everyone has a great finish to their weeks.

Slow is smooth...smooth is fast. That is the mantra baby!

nice swim!

Got in a long swim Monday.  Was supposed to be 3200, but could only manage 2600:

300
3x100 choice
Main Set:
4x200 with :30 rest
8x100 with :15 rest
200 kick
6x100 with :10 rest (skipped this part)
200 Cool down

Tuesday I started running... boy am I sore.  Did a 30 minute walk/run (ran 8 minutes) for a total of just over 2 miles.  I didn't stretch afterwards which I knew I should have, so now I'm sore.

Today got in another swim and fixed the bike!  Apparently I popped my own tire trying to put air in it.
Warm Up:
300
6x50 on :15 rest
   Build up by 3's
Main Set
5x100 on :10 rest
   Keep stroke long
4x50 Kick on :20 rest
200 Cool Down

Won't be trying the bodyrock thing this month, especially since I'm so sore from just jogging for 8 minutes!  Maybe some other time.

Nice work. Good job on practicing fixing a tire, can't get enough of that.

That bodyrock is intense. I am not sure if you are just supposed to jump into it, seems to me that there should be some warm up and cool down time as well as maybe just doing part of the workout or lengthening the rest intervals or reducing the reps or something, just to get started.

I find the body being sore to be facinating. I know I wake up aching everyday. The best way to get rid of it for me is an easy spin, just heals me up. If I got to do a run first thing in the morning, boy does that sucker hurt for the first 5-10 min. Another thing is a brisk walk. Both a bike ride and a brisk walk are fairly low stress cardio wise but get those legs moving fast and the blood pumping through them to clean up all the guck. It is a very tough thing to do but it really does work. (perhaps not so well when you first get started, but even then it helps). try it.

A lot of people like the swimming for that as well but I find that fast repetitive low stress movement is key and I never really got that out of swimming.

When I was in college being sore meant I was training right.  I love the feeling!  I got in a bike (41 min, 9.39 miles) and a run (31 minutes, 2 miles) today.  The bike felt amazing!  I was going faster and cut 3 minutes off of my route while going a little longer.  The run was not as tough towards the end as it was Tuesday so that's a good sign.  Went about the same speed maybe slightly faster, but I'm not to worried about speed yet.

Got a good stretch in before the bike and after the run.  My niece was here and I played a little bit of soccer with her - well kicking the ball around because she is only 2 1/2.  I'm trying to get as much time as I can with her before I move across the country.

2000 yd swim this morning.  Legs are still sore, but the pool felt great.

300 warm up
Main Set
10x50 on :20 rest Z3
10x50 on :30 rest Z4
10x50 on :15 rest (sprint 25, easy 25) with fins
200 warm down

The sprints were hard to get up and go, even with the fins.  The second round of 50's - it was hard to keep the heart rate up with such a long rest.  I should've cut the rest down so I didn't tighten up between the 50's.

This weekend: Saturday OFF (going to a massive Art festival), Sunday long ride (1-1 1/2 hour) and a 30 minute walk/run.

On the racing front - the tri I was setting my sights on as my first finally opened registration so I'll let you know when it's official.

Great report.  I laughed at the thought of :30 being a long rest when swimming 50's.  Is z4 effort level, and how does that compare to the RPE that I see on this site?

Good activity planned for the weekend

Look forward to hearing of the tri.  Exciting to hear about races, It's still February.

Tomorrow, I have a rest day.  I make pancakes for the girls. It's alot of fun as they're 2 and 6.

I played hockey tonight with the team.  I coach a group of kids with special needs.  We scrimage for the last 1/2 of practice.  It's good to get active and not have to go all out, or think of working hard.  This is just a good time and good light excercise.

Sunday I have a 11.6 mile long run.  This is a repeat of last week, so I hope to shave a few minutes off of it, while still maintaining a slow steady long run pace.  (Injury free)  Next Sunday I'll build to 13.6 miles.

Thor, get good rest before your race.  I hope you have a great race and make it to the beer garden before all the delicious adult style malted barley pop runs out.

Cheers.

I had a great swim workout Friday and a short run outside today. Did a lot of stretching after the run to try to avoid the piriformis tightness I've been experiencing after my runs.I have a little dilemma..... the half marathon I wanted to do as my 'A' race at the end of May is 80% sold out already. I don't want to miss registering but don't want to forfeit yet another race fee if I can't build up my distance by then. What would you guys do?

You know your body better than anyone.  Is what your feeling the beginning of injury, or the symptoms of soreness related to past injury and your getting through it.  (healing).  I would ask myself if it is better or worse.  If it were me, If it is getting better, I'd take it slow, real slow, and slowly build.  If it is getting worse, I'd stop.  Stretch, do other excercise, and check back in in a few weeks with running to see how it felt then.

I do not know the extent of the injury you described earlier personally, so that's my best .02 on my lack of knowledge.

I had a situation recently where I was playing hockey, and I jammed my ankle into boards as I was falling backwards and twisted it to the side and back.  I immediately felt stabbing pain on both sides of ankle.  I thought it was ligaments and tendons, pulled or torn.  Two months later, I still can feel that fall, but have gone through a process of babying ankle slowly.  It was hard at first, but has gotten easier over the months.  I feel it on both sides at around 4 miles of every run.

Work is sucking the life outta me!  Scholarship deadlines so overtime all week and worked another 8 hours today...yes and the three hour round trip drive. I do believe I should get paid overtime for my drive time too.  I managed to get small training in this week but nothing close to the training I was suppose to do.

One more week and then I am headed to So Cal! Can't wait! Get to see my lil punk and a half too. Run on the beaches...bike along the coast...it is all good.

First off - good luck Thor!

Hey everyone. I had a pretty good week weight wise. Managed to lose two ans a half pounds but I've injured my left hip. Might have tendinitis or something like that. so I went easy on the second half the week and didnt lose as much weight as I wanted. I'm bummed but I've got to be smart. I bought some new shoes and started doing some exercises to fix my fasciitis. Wish me luck.

Gotta run - off to make some homebrew. Have a great week everyone

Got in a long ride... longest of the year so far.  Boy is my going to be sore tomorrow!  Didn't push the run today since I'm so prone to injury, decided to do it tomorrow after the swim.

Family is coming over for the Super Bowl and some birthday cake for my bro... so glad I burned sooo many calories this morning.

Cathy - Tough to say since I don't know the extent of your injury nor to I know the cost of the entry fee...   You've got 16 weeks to train and that should give you enough time to build up your miliage.  13 miles isn't a killer amount and you could probably not push it and still manage to cross the finish line (changing the fact that it's an A race might be a good idea so you don't push yourself too hard).

On the other hand, if the entry fee is too expensive to really chance it - then you may want to save the money and register for another race later in the year...

My two cents - but good luck with your decision!

Sounds like you had a brutal week.  With all the stress coming from those deadlines - no wonder you are tired.  Some time on the beach next week should help!
