Morning TAN!

Busy weekend of seeing a friend in the penultimate performance of her play, followed by the cast party (actors can be weird!), then spend the weekend at a Kona watching party out in the 'burbs with friends, taking part in some neighbourhood tailgating for the Bears game, then watching a cyclocross race!

I want a cyclocross bike now.

cyclocross: I love you even more.

It was so much fun to watch - wipeouts, heckling, costumes, the obstacles... I'd have to practice that whole flying mount and dismount (heh, heh... mount... heh!) a LOT, otherwise I predict failure on epic levels.

Oooh! Thanks for asking (thank your smart kid) Jamesenyummyhottiesmartiespawnykidsasbrawnyandbrightasyou. I found a very cool new-to-me website ... there's an article on it and it looks like the Population Reference Bureau in DC pretty much did calculations the way I described, but with a later starting point and somewhat better data. If I can track down the actual PRB study (not just this review on Livescience) it will probably give me what their estimated margin of error is.

Your lungs will hate you for this. It is really hard and I think that's why it's so much fun. Pure Sweet Hell is the appropriate term for it.

lonoscurse - 2012-10-29 11:09 PM Good morning/evening Yanti.  How are you this fine day?

HI SIR CURSEY!

Fantabulous. Did NOTHING but take a short walk at sunset (after last week's ~18hrs of training).

How you be this fine fluffy Monday?

I am better than I deserve to be on a Monday Yanti.

Sir, I wholeheartedly relate, and admire your awesome attitude.

Not that it comes as a surprise

My son asked me a question yesterday that I do not think can be answered. I know there are a few smart people in TAN and others are dumb enough to be brilliant, so I will post the question here and see what people come up.

Is there any way to determine how many people have ever lived on Earth? From the 1st person until now.

I said there is no way to tell how many people there have ever been in the world.

Can. It depends on what we'd consider a starting point for human beings back in time.

Calculus is actually perfect for this stuff ... essentially you're adding up a bunch of equations at manymanymany points (like days in history, or maybe in this case years since everybody is born or dies in a given year) and allowing for the overlaps (since people aren't all born and die in groups at the same time, obviously).

I don't know if you can use straight calculus for this seems like you would need a rather complex model to take into account mass die offs such as in the black death.

Good Evening Your Royal Hotness Yanti Doll, Treadmill Crusher, Taxi's Bane and Goddess Of Brilliant Bewbs.

ALL HAIL THE HALLOWED HIGH PRIESTESS OF THE HEALING YET LEFT-HOOK YORKIE-HOLDING HONEY HYPNOMELONS!

Nah, I wouldn't do anything that precise. There's dips and bumps, but I wouldn't use an exponential-growth equation. Summation equation using say 50,000 BC as a starting point for humans, average estimated birthrates and population over, say, 50-year segments. Down and dirty (all pop estimates are very, very, estimate-y anyway), but that'd do it.

Yes that would be a good down and dirty calculation.

That was my point earlier about the lack of a reliable census so you could make a guesstimate but I think your margin for error would be rather large.

How are the free range piglets treating you these days?

Stellarly. I am hoping to sample a new source of free-range piglets on Hallowe'en. In Jakarta. At a roller-rink Hallowe'en party. My nephews (20 and 23) are in charge of my (surprise) costume. Lord have mercy.

Somehow it looked like pure sweet hell... and a ton of fun while enduring the hellish parts...  Now just to try and convince Tony that we need more bikes...

I said there is no way to tell how many people there have ever been in the world.

That would also depend on if you go by the religious time line of man or the "real" one

Because as I understand it the timeline from Adam and Eve is way shorter than the span of human existence.

That would also depend on if you go by the religious time line of man or the "real" one

you are referring to Adam and Eve?

Yes the answer would depend on if you are counting from Adam and Eve or not.

well I think that would be a lot easier than trying to determine when something evolved into a human right?

Gravity is also a theory.

So is pulling out

No it's not. I do it all the time.

Easier yes but way more inaccurate.  Actually it would be flat out incorrect.

WHY?

Because as I understand it the timeline from Adam and Eve is way shorter than the span of human existence.

So you do not believe that Adam and Eve were the first people...

Some do.  The ones I have taken online were only quizzes but they graded themselves.

If you make them all take the test on the computer then it will just spit out a grade, problem solved.
