Expert 1146 Chugiak, Alaska | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by skitri 2000m easy swim this am - felt good to shake some of the soreness off from the weekend. Question: How do you carry your salt tabs (if you use them) on the run?? I put mine in a mentos flip top container that I keep in my back pocket for both the bike & run, but they were making so much noise bouncing around on the run - I can't take 26.2 miles of that. Any suggestions? I used the mentos flip top as well for my HIM! Worked great on the bike and I didn't notice the noise on the run as I had a tri top full of ice making a racket! |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed 75 hours of work in 8 days, plus a wedding. STICK A FORK IN ME I'M DONE. Not feeling super confident about my fitness and my first triathlon of the summer series is Saturday, For example, my swim was quite slow today, and my trainer ride felt really hard yesterday, but surely that's just general tiredness? On the plus side, my husband and two boys are coming down with me to this race in our camper so we should have a nice time just hanging out at the lake. And, as I keep reminding myself, this race is just a sprint and really my dress rehearsal for my A race in 2 weeks. And I do love racing. One equipment related question, I got a new wetsuit last month (1st wedding anniversary may be Garmin, but 9th is traditionally a wetsuit and I took it to the lake to try once so far. I was super careful putting it on, but I still managed put a small hole in it. I think the neoprene is acutally much better quality than my old suit but it seems very delicate. I repaired it, but what can I do to prevent this? My nails were short and filed smooth. I want to practice transitions but I'm scared I'm going to rip it again! |

I am sure it is just general tiredness. Sounds like you did everything to be careful, but sometimes just pulling too hard will put a small tear in it. Just inch it on in gentle pulls and once up over your waist, pull the legs up a little more starting at your calves to give the torso a bit more material. You really need to use it and practice in it so you are as comfortable in it as you can be for your races. |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Well, i've missed several trainings this week and might miss some more. been putting in some late nights so I cant catch up on a missed morning. Plus it seems like Kens rain is heading my way for 3 days or so. So, I accepted a promotion at work this week that will shake things up a bit. For instance, the relatively laid back summer i was expecting will become hectic. I hope I'm not complaining here because its a huge opportunity for me and the family in the long run. the reason I mention it is to brag about my wife, Eileen. When i broiught up the changes we'd have to deal with if I took the new roles she never once implied I cut back on this tri stuff. while she doesn't at all understand the obsession, she understands the outlet it provides. Her one demand was that i outsource almost all non-work, non-family chores (hire a lanscaping company, use pros to the DIY projects that I havent been getting around to lately). I've always seen paying folks to do things i can do myself a total waste, but she's right that if I'm going to be around less, I need to 'present' and engaged more. Salt tabs - i brink them on the bike for HIM or longer, in a fliptop box within the toptube bento box with my nicotine lozenges. i dont carry them on the run portion of a race. in an IM they are at each aid station and dont take long to grab, and if they dont have them, they will at least have a sports drink with electolyea. now i might look into the tablets that go into a water bottle that someone else mentioned here. |

Veteran 268 Northern CT | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Congratulations on the promotion Bill. You're wife is a smart woman! My husband broke his leg badly 2 years ago (completely shattered both tib & fib - mostly steel from the knee down now) and we had to hire a landscaping company - best move ever - the company we hired was great and they also do contracting jobs (or have great referrals). Has made our lives much smoother. On a similar note - missed my am workout - stayed up WAY too late last night going through my husbands relo - retention package now that his company was bought. Number were much lower than we had anticipated so the move to CA is off the table for at least a year and we'll find out what happens from here - he's heading to CA tomorrow for a week. Rain or no rain - I'm trainer bound for the weekend. |

Veteran 385 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Originally posted by kenj Originally posted by ramiedd I have had a great few days of training from Saturday to yesterday. I have to travel for two days and hope to finish the week strong. I am going to try and bump my running miles this month without hurting anything is I believe is the key... Hope everyone is well. Bump carefully Eddie! No new injuries! Glad to hear the training is going well! Read some articles about increasing running, and they seem to agree not bump frequency first rather than miles per run. I seem to be on cruise control on my runs. so I go out and stay in the same zone all of the time. I need to start focusing on interval training on the run as well as some strength workouts. Get off the mind set of running x number of miles for the day (except on the long runs) |

Veteran 253 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Jamie--get some rest & you'll feel better! Good luck with your race. You reminded me that I need to cut & file my nails before I practice my OWS in my wetsuit tomorrow. I don't have much experience, but for me, it's slow, slow, slow to put it on & tri slide! Bill--congrats, that's great news & kudos to your wife for being supportive. Hire out what you need to, you need some time for your family & your hobbies! Those of you doing KS HIM--anyone want/need a parking permit? We have a campsite for Fri & Sat night & we get 2 parking passes (also gets you into the park for free & you get to bypass the line at the entrance) & we only need one. We aren't camping (with the threat of rain Sat/Sun, I broke down & got what seemed like the last hotel room in Lawrence), but my hubby & kids will hang out there during the race. You're free to park there before/during the race too. It's shady & close to the finish/expo. Let me know & I can email it to you to print off. |

Congrats on the promotion Bill! And on winning the wife lottery too! ETA: BTW, when I was spending months at a time in California a couple of years ago, my company picked up the tab on the landscape services and lawn care. I took back the lawn care, as it isn't that big a deal and both my wife and I enjoy the time outdoors on the lawn mower, but the landscape work I kept those guys as that is one project we both could do without! To me, worth every penny! Edited by kenj 2013-06-06 3:37 PM |

Roll it up your body from there. Do the same with your arms. Hands in the hole inside out then roll Salt tabs- I haven't used them in a race. My coach puts them under his leg grippers on his trisuit. I guess if they are tight enough they stay. But haven't tried it. Good luck to those doing KS 70.3 this weekend. I wish I could be there! Edited by Meulen 2013-06-06 3:49 PM |

Hey Bill - Congratulations on your promotion! I totally understand the DIY stuff. I ended up skipping my bike ride last Sunday in order to help finish the garden with my wife. She actually hired someone but he flaked out and never finished. It pained me to miss that bike ride. I feel so behind on the bike and I only have few week before my Oly race. Ugg I need to pull it together for the next few weeks and hit some long rides. |

Bill, good luck to your son too! Robin, so glad your bike made it back safely. Ken, Crowie is supposed is racing KS too! So I've got a question--the weather is indeed looking iffy, race day might be ok, but there are thunderstorms in the forcast for Sat night/Sun am. What should I do to protect my bike if it's supposed to rain on it all night? I'm thinking that I should cover my seat, do I worry about the chain? Anything else. I hope they don't end up canceling the swim! |

Forget about the seat, let's be honest, your wet butt will be on the seat in T1 so what does it matter if the seat is wet????? Cover up the drivetrain. Get a big enogh bag that stretches from the front chain ring to the over the rear cog. Make sure the rear deraileur and cable for it is cover up too. I always cover the bars too. Really, I cover up any avenue water can get into the cable system. My cables are sealed and in the frame mostly though, it could be hard to cover up exposed cables on the down tube. |

I hope they don't end up canceling the swim! Considering you are wet when you get out of the water the seat is wet anyway. I'd throw a plastic bag over it so that it's not soaked through. If you cover anything else up just make you don't trap water. Make sure you wipe it down after the race and clean/re-oil the chain if need be. I did a HIM last year in the rain. A couple things to note: 1.) I got 3 flats on the bike leg. Most people got 2. Just be prepared for a lot of debris to be washed on the pavement after the rain. 2.) You might want to take a few extra steps for your transition setup. I put my running socks/shoes in a plastic bag. It was great! The rain stopped by the run and I had dry shoes and socks it was almost the high light of my day - I think at that point it was. 3.) If it's raining be prepared for it to be colder than normal.
