Member 451 Gold Coast, Australia | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Originally posted by tatous Tried a variation of the chocolate milk post workout - almond milk with a chocolate protein powder. Didn't work, i had the porridge with banana, and an apple, and half an orange. Had pasta and chicken and veg for lunch but by mid afternoon I reached for the chocolate bars and ate way more calories than I burned this morning... really disappointed, but I'm going to try a set menu next week... what's everyones plans for the weekend? I usually have sugar cravings mid-afternoon as well, especially chocolate. I find if I can avoid sugary snacks altogether for 2 weeks, the cravings will disappear and I'll actually prefer savoury things. Every so often I fall off the wagon then it takes me quite some time to get back to not wanting sugar, especially when there are external stressors eg. work etc. At the moment I'm in the slump stage, and have put on a few kg, so I'm trying to get back to eating a little cleaner. Two things I have found to help: 1) beef jerky as a snack instead of cookies, chocolate etc--good protein, fair bit of salt and potassium (hot and sweaty here so I can justify the added sodium), and makes sugary stuff taste really weird. 2) Using a food logging site or app (I've used MyFitnessPal) tends to make you think about what you're about to eat, and sometimes reconsider. It'll tell you just how many calories you're taking in, too, which can be a real eye-opener. Plans for the weekend? 7km run this morning, probably a long bike tomorrow, or maybe a day off and long bike Monday, depending on family plans for Sunday. Thinking about a trip to the beach as long as it's not too hot |

Long run (for me) tomorrow... Happy weekend! Cheers! I converted your ride to kilometres and you rode 38.6km just shy of an Olympic bike distance. These milestones are nice gauges of where we are with our fitness. You're off to a great start. Let us know how your run goes tomorrow. |

Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Kyle - I don't plan on getting up to watch the game but most everyone I know will be. Make sure your time for the game is correct. My wife tells me it starts at 4:00am our time. The pre-game starts at 3:00am here as well. Edited by wenceslasz 2014-02-22 9:17 PM |

Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN I was up and off to my cycling group early today and we rode for 2 hours. Mostly Zn3 and less in Zn2. It was not as intense as our Tues/Thurs rides but good and steady. Tomorrow is my day off and I'm looking forward to it. |

Member 138 | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Thanks for all the tips on nutrition, I agree that maybe I need to break the sugar addiction, I've my meal plan for this week and will just focus on not eating sugar or unrefined carbs, even if it means eating more of other stuff. Hopefully it'll work (and help with my tiredness). I've no company for the bike today so im building the courage to get on the turbo, best buy ever! Mike - good job on the milestone |

8 Central Massachusetts, | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN What do people do about glasses in a tri? Do you risk contacts with the googles, throw on glasses after the swim, or bike/run without anything? Vision is not bad, just thinking of doing an Olympic at the end of the summer and I imagine 30 or so miles without seeing clearly might not be that fun. Thanks! |

4 | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Hello everyone. Just wanted to drop in. Read all your threads. Im gonna try and be more vigilant with my site visits and thread reads. Ran 7 miles today on trails. That was pretty much the limit of my current physical condition in regards to running. I Have a swim in the morning. Im only swimming once a week. 300 yards with a few rest breaks, This is concern for me as my sprint is march 31. I'm biking off road pulling a trailer with a toddler in it about 8 to 10 miles 2 x a week in addition to my mentioned schedule. When I say trails and off road I mean forest trails with soft dirt and a few hills. I bonk every once in awhile but pretty much have stuck to one rest day a week. Do you think if I up my swim I'll be in halfway decent shape to finish the sprint? |

Mike - good job on the milestone You're doing great Tay (on the nutrition stuff) just don't be too hard on yourself and if you're hungry eat. Don't deprive yourself of food if your body insists. Just be ready with better options that you actually like. One thing that helped me was I make myself have a glass of water before I have a snack or drink of pop or juice. Sometimes it completely satisfies my craving and when it doesn't I find I tend to eat or drink more slowly so it still satisfies my cravings better than if I just gulp it down. |

Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers Part 2 - OPEN Greg - Your run sounds like it was something totally unexpected but it also sounds like you had fun. Good for you. I think it is mixing with like-minded people that makes it fun. Mike S - I'm close to running without any stops or walking but not quite there yet. It's a worthy goal. Definitely take an easy week. I am currently at 10hrs/wk and every 4th week I cut it back to 7 or 8. As I get closer to my 1st race I'll build up to 12 or 13/wk and the easy weeks become even more important. Your Carlsbad Sprint should be exciting. I'll be racing that same day as well (I signed up for a 160km GranFondo bike ride). Rich - I usually leave my glasses at home (or in my car) when I'm racing. I don't need them for more than reading. For the swim I try to have several pairs of goggles and then I wear sunglasses for the bike and run. I buy the straps you put on the glasses to hold them in case they should slip off to keep them in place. If you need glasses to see important details like obstacles/potholes on the road ahead of you then just get some of the straps like I use - not sure what they're called. Carlo - I envy you being able to OWS. Just for interest a local pro (winner of Challenge Penticton last year) told me on Thursday that he'll be racing in IMTX this year. |

Do you think if I up my swim I'll be in halfway decent shape to finish the sprint? Hi Nicholas, If you're swimming 300yds in a pool more or less continuously, you should be able to handle your race okay with some proviso's. I looked at your race and it is an OWS which we may have discussed before but it is very different from a pool swim and it is 400m so 437yds so you should be swimming at least that distance now for training purposes. When I first started swimming I had to swim freestyle as far as I could then I had to swim some breaststroke to rest a bit then carry on freestyle again. At first I was about 50/50 free/breaststroke so practice both. My 1st sprint was 750m swim and I got too excited and couldn't put my face in the water so I wound up using my breaststroke the whole distance. The hardest part of the swim - especially a first time - is to keep yourself calm and to trust yourself. You could also increase your frequency of swimming to 3 times per week if you're worried about the swim. And swim for an hour each time. To just swim 300yds in a swim is not enough to build up your endurance. Will you be wearing a wetsuit or just a swimsuit? If you're wearing a wetsuit you'll need to practice that as well. I'm looking forward to reading how your sprint goes. |
