I use the light in the link below. I attach one to the saddle bag under the seat and one to the chain stay. Good visibility at distance. I do not use a light on the front of the bike but have noticed that the white front mounted lights do get your attention when riding toward one. I also try to wear a bright/flourescent color jersey when riding. Nothing guarantees that someone will see you but anything that can help is a good thing,

Was able to catch the second half of the soccer game over lunch. Whew.....some close calls but we pulled through. Survive and advance!

I started doing this a couple of years ago.  Bought a high lumen red blinking thing.  After seeing so many bikers out there using the same thing, I've come to the conclusion they're almost invisible.  Saw a guy today wearing a neon orange shirt and he had a blinking white light (front and rear) and he was nearly electric.  I saw him from a great distance.  Thinking that is the combo to have around here, especially with so many hills and windy roads to contend with.

Did you mean to say "invisible"? (No point in using it, it doesn't help one be seen.) Or "Invincible"? (Makes one very easy to see... Implied by your following comments.) Or, did you mean that you noticed the bright colors he was wearing long before you noticed the light? I use a Red Flasher on the back of my bike that is super bright; it can be seen from a half mile away during the day according to a friend of mine. I use a 750 lumen white light on the front, but I don't strobe the front light, only the back. I ALWAYS wear BRIGHT Yellow, Orange, or Lime Green tops. (Though I did just buy some outfits that are Black with lots of wild Yellow, Lime and Bright Blue shapes on them.) At dusk, the lights are necessary as there are no lights on the streets and roads I ride. During the day, I use the back light always, front light sometimes. If I know I am going to be riding later than usual I don't turn it on right away because I want it to be bright come dusk.

Invisible.  I saw that orange shirt and only when I was nearly passing the rider, did I see the red flashing light.  That is the case in numerous instances.

A while ago, Jordan Rapp did a piece on lights and lumen level.  I meant to buy one based on that piece, but forgot to.  Is 750 lumen max?

I never thought about putting a light on the front of my bike until last year.  Given my bottle mount and size of my bike, I haven't been able to figure out where the heck to put it.  My helmet?

Hi, guys! I'm in summer mode with the kids. I feel like I'm running a camp complete with cafeteria and field trips. My training has been whatever, whenever.

I did get my best Olympic distance time this past weekend. 3:25. My last Olympic result was in February, 3:37. This course was harder and hotter. My best swim and bike times ever, but the run was a bit slower. It was like running in an oven! The swim felt good even though I haven't been able to get very much swim training in. I think the strength training I've been doing helped. I didn't have any fatigue, so I could focus on my form. I'm still not doing something right with my swim. Hopefully when my training buddies return from summer vacations/work trips, the one that's a swimmer/swim instructor can help with that.

I do my road riding on a military base where it's really safe, so I don't have to put too much extra thought to standing out. There really aren't many blind spots to worry about, and traffic laws are followed to avoid getting in trouble with your command. Don't have to worry about crazy drivers.

Watching a replay of USA vs Germany. I have no idea what the result is. As an American, I'm rooting for USA.

I have lights on the bike but don't turn them on as much as I should. I've been wearing the brightest color shirt I can find for a while and feel like if they do not see the shirt the little light isn't going to help any. If I am out after dusk the light are on for sure

Blanda, congratulations on your race! When you have time please post more pics of your training grounds! I'm always so jealous.

I can't really add anything to the discussion concerning bike lighting systems as 99.9% of all of my workouts are on the trainer. Which is kind of weird considering I was a roadie before starting triathlons. However, I've never really ridden when lights would be needed on the bike. Maybe on a few cross state tours by someone in our group always had lights.

I can't believe tomorrow is already Friday. Where did the month of June go? I wish the school year went by as quickly as the summer does.

I don't ride with a light either as I never tempt fate with a ride late enough in the evening to warrant a light. I got stuck once before in the dark due to a flat and I'll never play it that close again, way too dangerous to be out on the road around here when the sun goes down. Everything at night is on the trainer for me.

Due to work and life this whole week has been a rest week, well a couple trips to the gym for weights, but I just let my knee rest. Today it feels great. Such a shame that I have to go golfing in an hour with some clients and miss an exciting Friday at the office. I don't know what I'm going to do. Probably have a beer and play golf though if I had to guess. Have a good Friday everyone!

With the weekend almost here....do we have anyone racing?

Hard to believe June is almost over and the year half finished.

Waiting to get on a plane to fly to Rhode Island for a college visit for my son. I'll be there until Monday when I fly back to Michigan, leaving him at Brown to take a two week course. It should be interesting. It will be his first real chunk of time away from us. He says he is ready and I have to trust him.

It seems likely that I won't be training much for the next three days with college tours and various activities occupying most of the time. I may try to run a little bit but nothing too structured. I tweaked my back yesterday (how? I don't know) so a couple easy days would be nice.

Have a great weekend.

No racing for me this weekend; I'm actually in a pretty dry stretch as far as races go. The only thing I'm signed up for is IM Chattanooga at the end of September. However, that also means I'm in high-training mode right; 80+ mile ride Wednesday and a tough run this morning.

Also, I never chimed in on the light discussion, but I'm going to be shopping for those soon. Now that I'm moved, I'm close enough to actually commute by bike to school. So, I'm weighing a couple options: go cheap and cool with a simple fixie bike that I'll commute with, or pay more and get an entry-level road bike. I'm leaning toward the road bike, since I'll be able to use that for workouts, as well. I won't use it everyday, but it's always been a dream of mine to be able to bike to work; my last commute was a little under 40 miles each way. So, once I decide on the bike, I'll need to rig it up for commuting, which means being visible!

I hope everyone's training well!

Got a private swim lesson this morning from my Masters coach since I was the only one there.  We did LOTS of catch-up drill work...I have a habit of starting the pull too quickly before my recovering arm gets far enough forward.  This really becomes a problem when I roll to breathe (or I guess more accurately, pick my head up and out to breathe ).    About 45 minutes or so in the pool, maybe 1300 meters (lots of discussion).

2nd outdoor ride of the year. A killer loop we call The Golden Triangle. Mostly climbing.
Felt really good to zip along.

Might have to go to work on Saturday, but I told the boss I couldn't come in until 1:00ish.
That way I can get some laps and a long run first.

ETA: 5 hrs on the bike this week. Longest to date.

Nobody racing this weekend? Hard to believe with this group. Got a 42 mile ride in this am. Perfect weather. Also just order a 5 swim lesson package. Here's hoping I can become a fish!

Me!  I raced the hilliest sprint in Wisconsin!  I won my AG!  Good swim (2:07/100), really good bike (18.6mph) and of course my run suffered (8:44) after being off for three months.  Happy!

Off to Minocqua.  More later!

Nice job on the ride.....and good luck with the lessons. Swimming is such a technical sport I think it would be hard to be a really strong swimmer without some lessons to address certain issues.

I had what I call a "race ready" workout today. These workouts are always tough and I guess the purpose is to put in some significant time on the bike and run at race power and pace. Since most of my races this year are sprints my workout simulates sprint distance and paces.  After a 30 minute warm up on the bike it was:

3X(10 min. at race/just over race watts on the bike....then transition quickly to the run and do 1 mile at goal pace or better)

Last year when I was doing several olympic distance events it was 6-7 intervals @10 min on the bike followed by 1 mile run. Paces/power were a bit lower. No way I could have done 6-7 today at sprint power/pace.

I was able to do a bit better than the prescribed power and paces but it was a sufferfest in the heat/humidity. I had pools of sweat in both my running and cycling shoes when I finished.

Longish run tomorrow and maybe a short swim. Next week things lighten up and I'm ready for some recovery.

Brown is a beautiful school. I would be very happy, but much poorer, if my son went to school here.

Providence is crazy hilly. Ran for 45 minutes this morning with some crazy steep hills in there.

Suzy. I couldn't be happier for you. Way to get back out there and crush the spirits of your competition

Had a really nice 11 mile run this afternoon. Put in a decent 30 miles this week although Ive kinda been slacking on the other two. Got two swim workouts in but no cycling. Ive picked up a copy of a total immersion video. Hopefully this will help my terrible swim stroke LOL!

Congratulations suzy on a great race

That's a really nice week of running. Total Immersion has helped thousands become more confident swimmers. Hope it helps. I watched alot of the TI videos/instruction when I first started swimming and it certainly helped me.

I'll have to second the vote for Dartmouth. When my son was looking we flew up to the NE to visit several schools in Feb. 2012. It was a really mild Winter and there was no snow at Dartmouth despite the fact that they were getting ready for Winter Carnival. Someone told me they had to truck in the snow for the snow sculpture........which was a big cupcake. Beautiful campus, excelllent school and a pretty town.  Not sure how many sunny days with temps in the 50s you have there in Feb. but thats what it was like when we were there. In all I think we visited 10 schools and Dartmouth was top 2 in my book with beautiful campus/area.

There are alot of great schools out there. So many of the large State schools now have an "honors college" within the university which is suppose to provide students with a more individualized program, smaller class sizes and the benefits of a "smalller school" within a large university. I think Brown is very unique in how it handles core classes etc. Very flexible if I remember. Your son will find the right fit.........have fun with the process.
