Heather did awesome today!  She got out first and I got out just about last. I had a tough time trying to swim far enough away so I didn't get kicked.  She waited for me which I thought was really nice.  She is going to kick butt next Sunday.  We are going to have a great time!  The OWS is a practice swim that the local Y does to get ready for races.

Z - 2007-06-09 1:37 PM How do you handle looking under the water? I have this horrible fear of opening my eyes  on open water (looking under)... I know it is weird but I have been this way since I was a kid... I guess you never know what's in that murky water ;-) Call it phobia I guess.

Hmmm.  Well you kind of HAVE to look!  Maybe you can distract yourself by finding someone to draft off of in the water....then you are just following their feet.

Or you could keep your eyes closed and maybe every 3rd breath look up to site the shore?  In the beginning that might be hard because everyone is bunched up!

If it helps, I have never seen any critters in the water

Way to go on the OWS girls. Good luck with the race this coming weekend.

I think with the number of people churning the water around, all "critters" leave the area, or burrow down. Also, with the number of people churning the water, all you see is churned up water. My problem is not being able to see far enough in the water to feel comfortable. I don't mind ocean OWS, but lakes get to me. I need to over come that. Otherwise I'm not going to make very good time doing breast stroke.

How did everyone do in their races this weekend?

Hi girls

Z--

That was the first lake swim I have done. Really I just concentrated on the bouies (sp?) and tried to haul but in the beginning so I did not get stuck in a group or get kicked. I had so much adrenaline that I did not think about any critters ....also I tried to swim in as straight a line as possible and really not follow anyone cause they might be off course I would not recommend using alot of leg stength if you can help it so I really tried to concentrate on relaxing my legs and trying to be as efficient as possible in my freestyle stroke. I felt like I was gonna vomit right before cause I was nervous but it was really fun

Every time I think about the run this weekend my tummy hurts. I am hoping that I will make it through!

PS Oh and Mel had a great tip! If you have a place to practice do it a few times before your swim...she has been several times in a nearby lake.....

Take care

Heather

Heather - awesome job on the swim!

Kateri - How was your first tri?

Cathy - I feel for you on the no husband thing, single parenting is HARD!!!! Hope you have a special fun time planned for when he gets back to help you get through it.

I had an AWESOME weekend in Austin. There were 6 women who all went down to do the Danskin tri. We left on Friday morning and the race was Sunday morning. We had lots of time to spend at the outlet malls, went out Friday night and had a few Margaritas and really enjoyed my time away. It was a super fun group of women all who have been doing the Danskin for many years now. I need to get them to sign up for BT! I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. The race was really fun, but the highlight of the weekend was just having some female bonding time and not having to take care of anyone.

I was pleased with my race results as I didn't get but about 4 and 1/2 hours of sleep the night before. There were 2600 people who did the race and I came in 140th on the bike! I was very excited, unfortunately my swim and run times weren't so speedy and my transition times need some serious help. Oh well, we are all planning to go back and do the race next year, although we are planning to stay 3 nights in Austin instead of just 2. That way we will have more shopping and hanging out time!

We are leaving for the beach in the morning and will be gone until Sunday. I may have minimal access to a computer, but probably not too much. I hope to do lots of running while I am gone. It's time to start preparing for my next race which is a 25k in July. It is called "El Schorcho" and it starts at midnight. My friend and I decided to do it pure for the reason that it sounded kind of nutty. I don't plan on running the whole way, but need to start working in some long runs.

Sounds like a really fun trip, Jill! Great job on the bike!

Heather and Mel, that's really cool you guys were able to do the OWS together. I am patiently waiting for my friend to recover from a bulging disk so she can give me some pointers in the water. She is a fish!

My first tri was this last Sunday and it was so much fun! I have updated my race report - finally. I have pictures to post - hopefully I'll get some time tonight to do that.

Question for you bikers---

I did the bike route for my Tri this weekend-- did a casual ride-- took 30 min-- just wanted to see the route.

Here's the question--My shoulders are killing me!! I must need to adjust my bike--Seat? bars? What do you think?

I'm off to read your race reports--- YEAH!!!

Trimom!

I was not trying in any way to scare anyone I was trying to be helpful!!!!

It really was fun and not scary at all like I thought.

I guess I am just nervous about the unknown especially transitioning as I have not done this before!

One of the best things was that Mel was there and I was not alone---and I have gotten great advice from in here!!!!

About the shoulder thing---the first road ride I did I felt like my shoulders were gonna fall off and I learned not to "white knuckle" the bike after that. I think I held on for dear life the first time!!!! I am learning to rely on my legs to do all of the work and relax my upper body.

LOL--- It was in a good way!! Nervous and excited

Yeah, I'm scared on the bike-- I'm getting used to the road bike but am still a bit unsteady. I'm going to have to pick up the workouts--- It's been so hard to get into the pool. Only one more week of school--YEAH!!! Then I'm hoping to do 4X a week. We'll see. I tried to sign up for the Danskin Tri here in MA--Sold out! Wow... oh well, there's always next year. I'd love to take a trip to TX for the Danskin

Wait... am I planning on my next tri before my first tri??!!

Kateri, Great job on your first race, woohoo you did it!  It's so much fun isn't it?  You did an awesome job I read your race report.

Jill, You did great too, 140 out of 2600!  That is a big race.

Jill and Kateri, NICE WORK!  So cool

Melissa, lol, yeah triathlons are like that.....you keep getting ready for the next race!

This weekend....I know Mel and Heather are racing.  Anyone else?  I am also racing, but unfortunately, I am planning a DNF.  I was told to not run by sports med   I have never DNF'd and I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do once I finish the bike!

It's getting hot out there.....makes training totally different!

I did a practice 5k tonight and jogged, walked, ran in 39 minutes. I know that is not super fast but I was pretty comfortable and did not kill myself. I am really not sure what to expect on the run.

3 more days to tri

I hope everyone does great in their Tri's this weekend. You have all been training so hard.

I'll be in North Carolina in the Asheville area for a marriage celebration for my sister. She and her husband tied the knot last summer on June 16th after being together for 20 years. They went to the court house and I got to be one of the witnesses. So, this year on their anniversary they are having a big celebration. Can you guess that they are non-traditional?

So I wil be having fun, but not racing. Have fun at the races for me. I look forward to reading all the reports.

Hi girls. Mel and I competed in the tri yesterday! It was a blast. I was very nervous!

I did well on the swim, placed first overall for the day....I was pleased with the bike time, and I do not want to discuss the run. I felt like I had concrete in my legs! UGH. I also need some big time work on my transitioning. Overall time was 2:04:41.

I completed a race report not sure how to post the link here.

I hope everyone is doing well!

I am planning on doing two more races this year one in August and one in Sept.

We had a lot of fun yesterday.  Heather did awesome! esp on the swim, she passed the whole entire wave that had left 3 minutes earlier!  The race started really early in the morning and we got there about 5 am so it was still dark out.  I just finished my race report.  I think Heather's hooked on tris now.

Mel & Heather,

Sounds like the two of you had a great time at the race. Way to go girls. Were you wearing matching outfits? Just wondering since so many seemed to have gotten the same tri suit.

Heather - wow that is so cool that you made a triathlon buddy in this forum!

OK gals, tonight before my weekly session with my trainer I had a few minutes to warm up on the TM. I didn't find a magazine I wanted to flip through so I decided to read an article that was pinned up to the bulletin board that was a story about my trainer. She is a 33 year old ovarian cancer survivor and did a full Ironman in Sept 2006 shortly after finishing her chemo and while she had a broken wrist. It is a pretty amazing story and VERY INSPIRATIONAL! Read it when you have a chance http://www.ironman.com/events/ironman/wisconsin/shawna-gibson-shares-her-unbelievable-journey-to-becoming-an-ironman-2
