I went back to the doc again this morning and finally they are listening. They took some x-rays, said i was hosed up and gave me some antibiotics finally.

I got a nice surprise last night, my wife gave me an early anniversary gift, a cylce trainer.

Don't you live where it's warm all year around??  Still, it's nice to have options, and that is a great gift!  Glad you are on your way to wellness now.  Don't forget to take your acidophilis!!!

The weather is great here most of the time during the winter months but occasionally I want to stay in when it's a cold early morning. Besides I want to buy some spinning dvd's and see what those workouts are like.

acidophilis? You knew I was going to have to google this.

Yogurt, love, just yogurt (that has live active cultures. Most do).

Helps replenish the body with the necessary good bacteria that get wiped out from the antibiotics.

Fielding - 2008-01-10 2:22 PM It's great to see you back in the thread, Hector! And I'm glad to hear the docs are finally listening. Nothing is more frustrating than knowing something's wrong and not being able to find a doctor who cares and/or believes you. (When I injured my knee last year -- torn medial meniscus, I eventually learned -- my primary care doc first old me I should try running on the treadmill "to see how it feels." I could barely walk at the time. Nice.)

Thanks Erin, I'm finally starting to slow down on the coughing and I hope tonights sleep will be a good one. Your right about finding a good doc that will listen, I got lucky the second time around.

So you gals recommend I eat some after I'm done with the medicine?

Oh, no. Start eating it now--I mean, you can also get the tablets from like a GNS or vitamin shoppe (or probably even pharmacy), but yogurt's cheaper and easier.

Even though the antibio's will kill it, they're around for awhile, and are very helpful with digestion. Makes it easier for the good bacteria to re-establish the bacterial colonies once the meds are done, too.

Hey everyone,

Sorry to jump in, in the middle of your conversation

I think I’m slowly getting into a routine here!  It’s taken a bit for me to get used to following a training plan, versus just throwing some time at one of the three sports as I felt like it, but I’m getting there this week I think.  I’m also happy to have finally gotten back into some healthier eating habits since my LONG break from them over the holidays!  I’m keeping this short as I’ve gotta get outta here and lift some weights finally!  I’m also due for a long swim tonight.  I haven’t found that night to catchup on sleep yet Yanti – hoping it will be tonight haha  I guess there is always the weekend otherwise!  Hope all of you that are sick/injured feel better soon!  I’m with Erin – let’s get it out of our systems now & have a healthy rest of the season!

Leslie – I hope that kitchen is finished for ya tomorrow!  It is such a headache having remodeling going on.

Will – How exciting that you may have found your first race!  Have you decided yet on it?

Hector – I’m glad the doc finally listened and hooked you up!  Hope you are feeling much better SOON!  Awesome anniversary gift!

Beth – Congrats!

Yanti – Hope you are feeling better soon too!

Will be back with more . . .

Renee

ShawnC13 - 2008-01-08 9:09 AM So week one is done for the year. Started at 199.4 this morning was 196.4 so that is ok I know how much weight can change in a day so that isn't a big thing to me but it is good to see the numbers moving in the right way. So no butt kicking needed here yet

That’s awesome Shawn!  Honestly, I could have used a good butt kicking, but am doing ok now!  I hit a bit of a rough patch over the holidays – sure doesn’t take much!  I’m finally getting things turned back around this week – only 2#’s to get back to where I was . . . as opposed to the 11 it was – whew!

Keep up the good work!

ldatug - 2008-01-08 7:32 AM No time for a long post this morning, but I"m back from Disney World.  Back to the gym....back to reality.

WB Laura - Hope you had a great time in Disney World!!  It's never fun coming back to reality!!

I made the early spinning class today - always questionable at 5:45am!  I liked my shoes & nothing hurt (well, other than my burning quads - but that's all good, LOL!)  I was a little worried about my knees, but they were fine.  It was a little strange not being able to move my foot on the pedal - I didn't realize how many times I usually reposition them to change my leverage . . . I figure it must be better teqnique to keep them locked into one spot, or the clips wouldn't be made hmmm . . . that will take a little getting used to, so I'm glad I bought the shoes now!  Ok, better start working   Have a great day all!

Renee

great job on the early spinning class. believe me once you feel comfortable with your new shoes and cleats you will have more power on the bike. it just takes time like with anything new. geat job, and have fun.

Thanks Will!  I went again today and am really enjoying the classes more each time I go!  I think I’m finally getting the hang of it . . . My first class was awful – I had NO idea how much to adjust / how fast to go / etc.  I like this instructor much better, she has us pace to the music, makes it MUCH easier for me to follow.  Plus I can tell by how she is reacting, what I should be feeling.  The first instructor never looked like the resistance had changed if that makes any sense . . . and I do think I'm liking the feel of my pedaling better with the clip-ins.

MrsUSMC - 2008-01-08 11:02 AM I everyone. I'm so so sorry I have been so absent. I feel really guilty! We have a bunch of stuff going on at work, which is where I normally get the most computer time and I'm getting ready to move when I'm at home. I have PM's Beth a couple of times, so at least someone knows I'm alive. I have decided to not run or walk for 4 weeks to see if I can get my PF cleared up. I'm spreading that time over to the saddle and in the water though.

Sorry to hear you are fighting PF . . . no fun!  But good to see you are planning to spread your training around, that is one great thing about training for a tri that I have really come to appreciate already!  Take care of your foot!

Mother scrubber!!  I am so pissed off right now.  I overdid it at Disney World.  Beginning yesterday the back of my right heel started hurting.  It's gotten worse and worse.  Turns out I have RETROCALCANEAL BURSITIS from walking too f#$%ing much at WDW.  So now I have to back off of running at least until this clears up.  I biked this morning and it didn't seem to bother it too much.  I wish my pool wasn't closed.

Has anyone ever had this before??

Laura, never heard of it.  Glad the biking didn't really bother it.  Did they give you any idea how long it may take to clear up?  Hope it heals soon!!

Laura: Oh wow, that sucks so much. And I know you were really looking forward to getting back to training. At least you have an excuse to focus on swimming and biking now? (Last year I was laid up with a knee injury that kept me from running for a couple months. I was miserable at first, but it really forced me into the pool, which in hindsight was great.) I hope you had a great time at Disneyland, at least!

Renee: I am so impressed that you made it to the 5:45 a.m. class. I have a *terrible* time with early morning workouts. I just can't do them unless I've got a buddy counting on me to be there. (and sadly, I don't have any workout buddies right now). Go you!

Thanks Erin.  I find that if I build the early morning routine into my schedule daily, then I do well at it.  I did AM workouts consistently from Jan-Oct last year, then I started going off and on, until it was more off than on!  It was HARD to get back to, but now that I expect it daily again it is going much smoother!  I could be your virtual partner

Be proud, Shawn. It's like a 500-dollar bill. Fewer bills; more value. The chicks dig it.

Bethie, darling! CONGRATS on your 7000th post!!! (Can't have been as memorable as 5000, but whatever).

And, on the star front, I have another pretty pink one.

Back to important mentoring thoughts. (Wait, stars are important around here!!)

ERIN on bike tedium

Fielding - 2008-01-07 3:24 PM I really don't like riding my bike. Or rather, I don't like riding it for exercise. Just going out for a joy ride with friends? Totally fun. But spending an hour or more on my bike for training is so...I don't even know how to describe it. I just get bored and fidgety and cranky. The thing that sucks is that I did really well on the bike in my race last November, so I feel like I have the potential to be pretty good at cycling, but I really don't have the patience to log all the hours/miles I should. Does anyone have any tips for getting over a mental hurdle with biking?

Yes. Join Team T.I.T.S. [insert all kinds of inappropriate jokes here.] Where else but in my challenge thread would you find a pic of a hot guy in a thong?

Well, other than just continuing to get lots of T.I.T.S., here's random suggestions to think about, use in combo, heave a sigh or even rotten fruit at, etc. FWIW when I first started going out on long rides (just last year!) I would get frustrated and even angry. Of course, learning how to shift gears helped an awful lot Tongue out. Breaking up and structuring the long ride can make the time fly. It's like the difference between getting in the pool and just swimming a straight 2000 or having a planned workout.

1. Mental hurdle = mental training. Use it as meditation time. Focus on breath for 10 min, then 10 min of thinking of your body and bike as one large circle with energy flowing through it created by the pedals, 10 min of focusing not at all on your body but only on the surroundings and the air and the road, 10 min of singing to yourself out loud ... oh, that and warmup and cooldown and an hour's gone by, who knew? Oh yeah, and 10 min of focusing on lowering your heart rate ...

2. Pedal stroke drills. I seem to have a semi-infinite library of these. Just ask.

3. Go out for more joyrides with friends, and do other things where you insist on having fun with your T.I.T.S. (T.I.T.S. is T.I.T.S. and what's better than a whole group showing off their T.I.T.S.? Okay, okay, I'll stop.) Some of the best riding I did and when I learned most about my bike was just cruising my neighborhood. Maybe find some fun group rides, like a donut ride or a taco ride. (Heck, you live in Berzerkeley ... bet they have a pot ride ... okay, maybe that's not such a good idea). Go get lost on your bike. Just make sure you have a spare tube, some money and a cell phone. Don't bring a watch. Bring a lunch. Go find a nice park or a weird spot and enjoy the picnic.

4. Create interesting terrain by playing with your gears. Again, I have a semi-infinite library of fun rides you can do with gearing.

5. Cadence work. This is really important (should I do a mini-article on this?)

6. Clean your bike. Look up a cleaning-your-bike article and follow it. The more love you put into your bike, the more you will want to make love to it. I know by now you guys have figured out I am a little quirky, but think about this ... it makes sense. When you clean your car inside and out, what do you want to do with it? Exactly.

That's all I can think of for now. But it should help a lot in making long rides for yourself that you look forward to.
