Anyone else exeprience a GIANT appetite after a big workout week?  I swear I could shovel in food all day long today.  Rest days suck because they put me at my pc sitting at my dinnette table which is close to the fridge!  Someone tape my mouth shut.

I'm always starved after a good workout weekend. I usually have to nip out and get a muffin or something because it feels like I might wither away to nothing if I don't.

I resent you mark about being crazy to to a HIM up here in Sept. Why it's a wonderfull time of year. Pleople are getting out their ssowmobiles and skates.

Rob--I don't know who to respond to first, you or Steve.  The remark was made about WI, not Canada. My point was no one would have another tri in WI on September 13th because everyone is part of IM WI.  My weather is really no different from yours most days.

Steve--socks and arm warmers? what about the rest of me?  I'm kind of modest.  I talked to another girl who is doing IM WI and her suggestion was exactly like Tracy's.  I'm going to keep my fingers crossed it isn't frostbite weather, if it is--bra top, tri shorts under the wet suit and arm warmers/tri top/socks/headband once I am in to TI. It wrecks my matching black and white outfit, but its too late to worry about that now.

Pleased with the time spent on the bike, but feel like I should have been running a little more.

Almost hate to even post this after Suzy puts up her numbers

Don't even say that...remember you already have a great bike base and are a good swimmer.  I am trying to get where you are so it takes me a lot longer to do it. my one leg up is running and that is why I am doing half as much as I usually do.  We both are going to have a great first HIM day.

So far only two members (ok technically 3) of the MG have sent me their address. If you're worried don't be. I will not post it anywhere. Promise! I will let the cat out of the bag: The following pic is like what I plan to make only with laser etched lettering:

Hey guys.  I’ve been out of the loop for a while – trying to keep up with reading the posts at least but not doing much posting myself.  I’ve been in “running mode” for the last two weeks trying to get ready for my half marathon on 9/13.  In fact, I haven’t been on my bike or in the pool at all recently.  I’m hoping to change that tomorrow though with a trip to the gym in the morning for a nice, easy swim.

The running has been going well (partly due to the great weather we’ve been having lately) but I’m still only up to 8 miles for my long runs which means I’ll probably only hit about 9 for my longest run before the half.  But the course is mostly flat (just one hill and that’s the bridge going over the river), so I think I’ll be OK as long as I pace myself well and don’t worry too much about a time goal.

Suzy – I’m sorry about your friend.

Kim – nice job on the 100 miles!  Takes me about 3 months to get to that distance.

Doug – my husband likes to do woodworking too in his spare time.  Interested to see what you’re making.

Trevor – congrats on the 79 miles this month!

Janet

Edit:  Doug – those are nice!  I sent you my info.

I took off a lot of days this month, but I've still gone longer on my runs and spend more time in the water.    Sept will be more running and water work, as I want to PR my Half Mary with a time of about 1:30-1:40max.  I love being on the bike, so I cannot give that up.  I still want to hit 2k miles on the bike this year.  So all in all I'm on track for my Bike/Run annual goals.

August's totals:
Bike:4h 23m 29s  - 88.74 Mi
Run:7h 46m 59s  - 52.32 Mi
Swim:2h 33m 29s  - 5046.81 Yd

So there has to be an easy joke somewhere about being off your rocker right?? Very neat hobby Doug!
So when you aren't working or training, or raising the kids you do this? When I'm not doing any of those three things, I am sleeping!!

I agree Savage is going to be bike ugly, but is has nothing to do with your mileage.  That things is TOUGH!  I was thinking about it as I was huffing and puffing up the toughest hill on the IM WI course.   The two don't even compare, Savage is
10xs harder!

I don't taper well.  I am going CRAZY! I worked 10 hours yesterday to get through my rest day. I have a lousy one hour OWS today.  Someone tie me down to a chair or tranquilize me please.

How about Yoga?  Good stretching and it fills up the workout log.

I went out for a 6 mile run this morning and ended up walking 2 miles back home.  I think I am in TROUBLE.  My ITB started rubbing again and I could feel the pain coming on so I walked it on in.  I don't know what  to do from here.  Should I go to the Doctor to see what I can do?  I have been icing and stretchning and foam rolling.

I am 27 days out from the race.  That will be one hell of a taper...not running for 3.5 weeks.   I am starting to panic a little in that I have put a full frigging year into gettin up to speed to be able to do this race, and now it looks like I could be walking the run...or turning it into an aquabike event.

VENT over!

Barry,  if I were in your shoes I would go see the doctor.  He may be able to offer a course of treatment that will put you back on the road to recovery - or at least give you sound medical advise so you don't do permanant damage.  I'll be keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you.  I know how hard you've worked.  Keep us posted and take care.

First, all is NOT lost.  You still have 27 days.  Sure make an appointment with a sports med (NOT GP) doctor because that will be a route to a PT if you need it, but this is what I would do first if it were me:

1. Find a graston provider in your area and make an apppointment asap.
2. If there is no graston provider, make an appointment with an ART provider.

Both of these techniques work to break up scar tissue and loosen tight tendons and muscles. It will take several sessions, hurt like crazy and you will be bruised (sounds fun, huh?).   It probably will NOT be the holy grail because you might have a form issue/muscle imbalance you need to treat.  You can work on that with a PT over time, but with limited time this is where I would start to potetially eliminate the pain.

PS often times insurance will pay for part or all of graston or ART for a period of time.  Typically chiros do this, but some docs do as well.

DONT DELAY!

X2 on don't delay on seeing a doc/specialist.

And don't have negative thoughts right now, Barry.  You have run fitness, you may have to do a run/walk on your race, but that is not the end of the world.  Remember to think positively!

And Suzy...no chemical tranquilizers for you!  Maybe you could read some of those articles that Tony and Steve were referring to re: coefficient of drag... that would put me to sleep in a minute!

If anyone ever figures out and bottles what it is that makes some runs effortless please let me know.  Today's 5 miles was possibly the easiest run I've taken this summer.  It's also the closest I've run after eating.  Late lunch + early run = ???

Barry, absolutely get to a sports med.  I'm big on specialist for injuries.  Couple short stories...
1.  my nephew and a friend of his both tore their ACL within about 3 days of each other their junior year in HS with nearly identical tears.  My nephew heads to Indy for Sports Med.  His buddy goes to the local Ortho.  My nephew was fully recovered in about 4 months.  His buddy could barely wrestle the next season (about 14 months).
2.  When I shattered my left elbow on Super Bowl Sunday 2001 (I fell 19 feet) I had two options - super ortho if I waited until Tuesday or the surgeon on call.  I waited (which was painful as hell - I'm also a fan of morphine pumps) and still play golf to about a 3 handicap.

Point of the story - don't screw around with it.  See an expert.

Thanks gang.

I have an appointment with a friend of mine tomorrow who has a rehab clinic combo with chiro and PT.  Actually my friend that got hit on the bike was one of the PT's there.  Maybe we can get on some type of treatment that will get things going in the right direction.

Worse case scenario.  I have a 4 week rest on the run.

Suzy, I looked up Graston and ART and there are no providers close, so see what PT says tomorrow.

And John...Hell yes I am toeing the line.
