I struggled with my weight for 10 years while counting every calorie I put into my body. My problem became not so much total number of calories but what they came from (I'm gonna drink 1500 calories of beer and skip dinner tonight). 2 years ago in November I quit counting calories and lost over 70 pounds. I don't actually count calories either, but do have a general sense of what various foods contain. |

Did a quick search on pub med and found this for anyone who wants a nice paper with additional references:riginally posted by TriAya Originally posted by switch Yanti--super interesting. Thanks for posting. I remember reading Lauren's thread on ST. Oh, ST;) I was just looking for current recommendations on protein intake the other day, and I couldn't find a definitive number recommendation. I saw some as low as .8g/kg and one as high as 3g/kg. Do you mind sharing your source for your numbers? I don't log my food, but I'm guessing I'm in the 1.5g/kg range most days. Fairly recent peer-reviewed studies and reviews actually involving endurance athletes, in decent journals. The two major variables affecting protein needs were training load (volume + intensity) and gender. That said, the number ranges I quoted were very safe, so to speak ... even high-load endurance athletes not training or performing at the elite level tended to do fine at 1.0g/kg (female) and 1.2g/kg (male). There actually aren't gazillions of well-vetted studies/reviews out there so guaranteed you can find them with a pretty quick academic database search. Dang, link isn't working. If anyone can't get the link to work as cut and paste (probably because of university subscription to the journal), pm me and I can send you the pdf via email. Edited by switch 2013-08-02 10:30 AM |

This morning I was trying to decide what to wear, and grabbed a skirt from the dryer. When I took the skirt out it was pretty wrinkled, and I went to shake/snap it out to see how bad the wrinkles were as Mama doesn't iron. Well, I was, um, naked, and gave the skirt a firm snap and the drawstring--yep, SNAP!--right there. FACH ME THAT HURT! |

Even tho I don't count I still can look at a piece of food and have a general idea of the macro nutrient break down so I did learn a lot in my 10 years of struggling. I just do better knowing what's in it but not journal it. |

(and yet snerking at the same time) Ironing doesn't happen in this household either (at least it doesn't happen by me) so I've done the 'grab straight out of the dryer and go to zip the skirt up only to find out it's faching 100* and burnt myself' thing. There's also days that I just don't corner well (like today) and seem to hit my shoulder on the wall every d@mn time I turn a corner. Yep, I'm that awesome. |

Snerk is BT talk for a snort or other type of guffaw after you hear something amusing. |
