Do it.  Toeing a starting line and going through transitions adds to your overall training, not to mention the race will be a great workout in itself.  I am doing a 1 mile open water swim race this weekend instead of my scheduled swim workout even though the total distance is less it will be a great chance for me to swim open water and to battle it out in a race atmosphere.  I also have an olympic planned for the 27th.  It will be replacing a long run (2hr 10min) and a swim (2500m), but those are just a drop in the ironman training bucket.  We do a lot (A LOT) of training so replacing a workout or two with a race will not ruin everything you've created.  It will more likely spice up your training and keep you motivated.

I am working my long bikes into my races by riding to or from the event.  The Olympic I have coming up is on a Sunday,  and on that weekend I'm scheduled to ride 3.5 hrs so on saturday I'm biking from home to the race city (about 70 miles) then meeting my girlfriend at a hotel, doing the race in the morning, and having her drive me home.  Same thing for a race later in the year except it's on a saturday and about 100 miles away.  I will stay at a hotel after the race then ride home on Sunday while my girlfriend drives my wetsuit and extra junk home.

Sounds like a bunch of you are doubting your training or commitment. Don't! You do what you can with the time you have. That's why training for an IM is so damn hard!  We're not professional triathletes! We can't train all day and all night. We have lives to live, work to do, families to take care of, etc!

On that note, I'm not all that happy with my cycling for the month. :P

May's totals:
Bike:22h 30m 02s  - 422.44 Mi
Run:14h 10m 31s  - 104.66 Mi
Swim:6h 25m 25s  - 16631 M
Strength:10m
Stretching:2h 35m

FYI, I got my case of 12 Ironman Perform in the mail today.  I thought we might get lucky and get 24 but I will take what I can get.

How do u like it?
Have not tried it yet.  At $1.50 a bottle I thought I would save it until I have longer training days to make sure I can handle it.  I don't plan on spending that much per bottle when I can get it at Sam's for $14 for 24 bottles.

I might try it for my 4hr ride on Saturday if it hot to see how it works.  I sweat tons and if it is humid it should be a good test.

May's totals:
Bike:34h 58m 52s  - 581.17 Mi
Run:11h 41m 44s  - 65.28 Mi
Swim:1h 34m 02s  - 4413.24 M

My bike goal was 600 miles, I'm pretty happy with 581.  I was unsure what my run mileage would be b/c of an IT Band issue so I set my goal at 12 runs, I hit that, got more miles than I expected (less than I wanted) and am currently having no issues with the IT Band, all in all, running was a success this month.  Swim training was abysmal...not sure what my goal was but two swims for a total of 4400 M is pathetic.  I think I'm going to register for a 5k swim, that should get me in the pool on a regular basis.

I'm in for the June challenge but won't start counting until next week.  With an impending deadline, this week will be all about work, I'll squeeze in training when I can and chalk it up as a recovery week.

Im in for June. I want to raise the bar a bit: have something in for every day of the month. Even my planned recovery days will have a core workout or yoga or something. I feel like its starting to get to crunch time with less than 90 days to go!

So my May goals were:

Swim: 13 hr
Bike: 28 hr
Run: 22 hr

And actual was:

Swim:13 hr
Bike: 26 hr
Run: 14 hr

Obviously significantly short on the run and a little short on the bike.  It has been a crazy couple of weeks.  I'm definitely in for the 3 strikes club.  I need a push to get back into consistent training.

A positive note to share.  Did a three hour or so ride recently and midway through I stopped off at a friend's house to refill water bottles.  Their three sons (7,5,3) came out to check out my bike, gear etc.  As I mounted up to ride off the oldest yelled at me to wait for a second.  I waited (not without a touch of impatience I am embarassed to admit) and he bolted into the house.  He came back out a minute later with a sharpie and a pad - they wanted my autograph!  Tri is necessarily about ourselves most of the time, but the reflection we cast goes wider and deeper than we might see.

Fed Ex dropped off two boxes of Orange Mango PowerBar Perform at the brown_dog house today.  I compared the nutritional info on the bottles to an equivalent amount of PowerBar Endurance drink, and they look pretty much the same.  The only difference is that the Perform has twice as much Magnesium.

I haven't tasted it yet because I want to save it for a hot long ride.

Hmmm... might have to make myself a June challenge. Didn't have a May challenge set for myself, but here are my numbers for May:

Run: 10:41 hrs, 75.97 miles
Bike: 13:50 hrs, 275 miles (hmm... this is very wrong... SportTracks isn't showing all my time on the trainer... I'll have to look into this. Should probably be twice this).
Swim: 7 hrs (need to do a better job of tracking distance here)

Starting to think more about what I'll be wearing for race day.

For swim I will have De Soto Tri Shorts and right now am debating on either going topless or wearing a tri jersey.  The con of not wearing the jersey during the swim is having to put it on in T1, though the hardest part of this would just be getting out of my gear bag. The pro to not wearing the jersey during the swim is that I can have the pockets preloaded with nutrition for the bike.  I have considered the De Soto Swim Top and think it would be nice, but in the end probably not worth the money.

On the bike I'll keep the tri shorts and add the De Soto Forza Tri Jersey (if it's not already on from the swim) because it is light in color and has the skin cooler material.  For IMAZ I put on a cycling jersey on after the swim which was nice because of the larger pockets, but I feel that a cycling jersey won't be as nice for the Kentucky temps.  I am still undecided about helmet selection.  Would an aero helmet not be right for this race since there are hills and heat/humidity?  Is it better to stick to a better ventilated road helmet? I'll also put on sunglasses and of course bike shoes.

Run will replace helmet with hat or visor unless I'm not as sweaty as I'm expecting and run shoes will replace bike shoes.

Feeling good following the crash and the bike is put back together.  Made a couple of 20 mile rides, so everything checks out.  Will give it a really good workout this weekend in Georgia the the Rock n Rollman Half Ironman.

I will be wearing a Desoto Forza trisuit on the swim, bike, and run, in the Georgia half and IMLOU.  Same one that I trashed on my bike crash.  Patched and ready to go!!!!!!!!!  Of course i will wear a wetsuit if the temp allows in Georgia.

HI - Long time reader, first time writer ...

Just wanted to say that I'm stoked for IMLV. It will be my first I did Wildflower this year (Cali 70.3 in 08, Alcatraz 09)... but this is a whole new thing!

I taste-tested the Ironman Perform drink through LA TriClub and thought it was pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of Gatorade though and this was 'non-abrasive' to me, so definitely digestible.  Kinda stoked on getting more for free -- everything adds up so it's nice to get a little training cost savings.

Otherwise, I didn't technically make the May commitment, but feel like I'm on track with my
May's totals:
Bike:25h 53m 39s  - 352.69 Mi
Run:17h 21m 19s  - 96.09 Mi
Swim:12h 54m 28s  - 34982.55 Yd
Softball:1h 30m

Running was a bit lame at the end, but that's cause I pulled my hamstring...

Otherwise, can't wait to experience the humidity and fun of the Ironman!

My case of Gatorade showed up today....and I didn't even order it...so I'm guessing EVERYONE is getting some?  I don't plan to train or race with it....so I'm not sure what I'll do with it.  Hmmmmmm.  Guess I'll take it to work and give it away.

To late...workmates are already pounding it down.  I'm using Infinit for the race anyhow...train with it and race with it.  I've been using it for a few years now and it works like a charm for me.  Infinit for the bike.  Hammer gel with water on the run.  I nailed down my nutrition on 08 IMFL and haven't looked back since.

Have you used Infinit run formula? I have used it for 2 years and love it! Also use the code trimind when you order Infinit again and get 10% off. It took about 6 months to get the run formula right but once I did it was on. Tons of energy...

Nope, I haven't but I was JUST getting ready to do my next order before I checked this forum.  My thinking on the "special drink" for the run was this, and maybe I'm wrong, but I can only carry a fairly limited amount of MY drink during a marathon, and eventually I would have to change over to either water or THEIR drink.  I'll pop over to INFINIT to see if they have a solution to this.  I really don't like using my IRONMAN formula for running, because it becomes very foamy when my drink container is less than full, then that makes all new issues to deal with.  I used my hammer gel with great success for the last few years, but I'm off to take a looksey now.

I used the Powerbar Ironman drink yesterday on the bike during a hot HIM.  I didn't love the orange mango flavor, but it went down smooth and my stomach was fine.

I run with a four bottle fuel belt and keep one hour worth of formula per bottle. I make it thick and use the water on the course to chase it down. Here is my formula

Cals: 277
Sodium: 416mg
Potassium:112mg
Total carbs: 69g
Sugar: 21g
Calcium: 33mg
Mag: 26mg
