Hey all, been busy with this and that, so haven't been on the forums much. Now that my annual Gasparilla half marathon is behind me (for which I was grossly undertrained), I am setting a goal of no longer being the world's slowest runner. I have a 5K in a couple of weeks and will use that as a benchmark for the season.

I would like to break 30 minutes for a 5k.  My PR is 32 (yeah, slow Embarassed)

I know we have some really good, fast runners on here. Any tips you can give would be appreciated.

Ok, I know I'm not the fastest runner here.  I took a quick look at your running logs and saw you are doing some speed work, my thought is you might want to do some shorter quicker intervals. Since your speed work isn't on a track, maybe you could sprint from one telephone pole to the next then slow for a couple and repeat.

Thanks Lenny. I dont' have easy access to a track, so have to run on the road. My issue is that I've done almost all of my running with a group, and we are, well, lazy. The running club does have a track workout group that starts in May, so I may participate in that this year. Until then, I am thinking each week could include:
- interval run or hill run
- tempo run
- longish run on the weekend
- maybe a recovery run?  heck I don't know...feel free to chime in here

CRIPES, WHERE YOU BEEN!?  Just saying hi because I think we all know I'm not the one that should be giving advice on running.  I ran too hard the week before last and last week my shins were killing me.  Still recovering from that stupid move.  Hope all is well!

Second tredmill speed work this morning. After 30 minute warm up run with Brewer, went to the Y and did 6 x 800 @ 7:00 - 7:30 pace, last 2 were @ 6:45. Total workout, just over 7 miles, I know I will feel this tomorrow morning.

Didn't you do some experimentation with running form? Was that what killed your shins?

I'm going to chime   If your goal is to get faster then speedwork is essential.  You can do it even if you don't have access to a track.  We often use a loop in a neighborhood by the gym. It is about .8 mile - we do the speed for the loop and then run through a hotel parking lot for the recovery.

Hills are good and tempo is to but it can be tough to judge.  Do you have a garmin?

Thanks Lisa, I was hoping you would chime in. I do have a Garmin and the street I live on is actually a pretty good loop, as it is flat and straight, with little traffic, and just under one mile.
I've got a number of short distances races -- 5ks and sprint distance -- coming up and need to alter my strategy.

If you have a garmin then the tempo runs can be really good.  You want to do the run at about 85%-90% race pace. -  For example, if I was training for a 5K right now with goal pace 6:10ish I would run about 1 mile warm up - 4 miles at 6:40 or so - 1 mile cool down.  Obviously everyone is diffferent but that is the general idea.

No....I don't think so.  I just went all out a couple times without warming up and capow!  It's very discouraging.  Went for a one mile run today and my shins still hurt...so I stopped and I'll give it a few more days to go away.  I'm so pissed because all I want to do is get training on the run because it's my weakest part by far!!Undecided

Perfect, I can set the Garmin to beep at me if I go below a certain pace.

Yeow, that sounds frustrating.  The run is my weakest as well. The bike part is always fun and I've almost gotten to where swimming is relaxing and enjoyable but the running...not so much.

Yup...sure is.  I will just have to wait and be patient...another one of my not so strong sides.

So how many people fill out the brackets for the men's basketball?

I usually do one with the family, done one on Yahoo a few times too.

So who's going to pick Wisconsin and Marquette meet in the ellite eight?

Weather is real crappy here.  It's been like a monsoon for two days.

I run a bracket pool at work, there are a bunch of teams I'm not sure about.

Gonzaga v. Florida St. ?

Baylor v. Nova?

Temple v. Wisconsin?

More rain here too. The time change did not help either. I overslept this morning and now have to run in the evening.
There are a couple of bracket pools going around at the office.

I usually do a bracket against my husband but I haven't been paying too  much attention this year.  My kids each did one online last night - it was pretty funny listening to two 7 year olds pick teams.  One has Kansas taking it all  - the other has Kentucky.

I hate to say it but I think Wisconsin is overrated.. Marquette is going to face a challengeing WA state team.

So here is the "official" bracket email that just made its way around the office. I am guessing this individual is tired of running the poolInnocent:

We are managing our pool with CBS sportsline once again. Shannon  was our winner last year, She went and got herself knocked up to avoid running the pool this year, so I guess I am doing it again this year. Please make your picks by Thursday before the first game, and get me your $2 ASAP. If you have any problems, [name] is still listed as our bracket manager. Good Luck.

I usually get into a couple of pools.  Always been a huge college basketball fan and a lifelong UNC fan.  I have really not paid much attention this year.  I am sure it is largely due to Carolina's poor season.  Just have not been motivated to watch them play so poorly.  Will still pick a couple of brackets but it will likely be ugly.  Love the tournament and all the excitement of the games.

I have heard good things about Wisconsin from several of the ESPN gurus.  I think there will be more lower seeds winning in the first 2 rounds since there do not seem to be as many really strong teams seeded in the 5-8 range.  My prediction is for Kansas to win it all but really I dont care so long Duke does not win it!!!!!
