Darn you people and you're spending money!!

You've got me sucked into it too.

I've had 2 garmin 305s take a leap off the bike and get run over by a car, all because of the quick release. I can't swim in a 305, and I don't trust a quick release anymore. I upgraded!

The new Garmin 310xt is inbound

Turns out I had a $50 credit at Amazon, and I have someone willing to buy the refurbished 305 for $80 when it comes back. So, that's $130 off making it reasonable....

woo hoo!

Possibly a HIM.  Looking more like Augusta at the moment since it's a fall race, although I've thought about Florida, New Orleans, Galvastin, & Austin.

I'll give you guys an update on Augusta in exactly 1 month from today! Assuming the E.coli in the river doesn't shut down the race this year.

I may do one next year. have to see how I feel at the end of the season. It's also gonna depend on the wifey. I've got 3 kids all under the age of 6, and I've been consumed with training for a quite a while now. It's gonna be nice to get some spare time back.

Cool - note there are two quick disconnect kits around.  I opted for the one with the rubber bands on the bike mount (it also uses the same band rather than the separate black band).

If I do one it will be NO.  I grew up there and finishing in front of Jackson Square has got to be something special.

We'll see if I love/hate the olympic distance first next month, though.

My thoughts exactly.  If I don't kill myself this weekend, i'll consider the HIM next spring.

A buddy of mine is a mountain biker and has had problems with his 305 and quick release. I borrowed it for a run before getting my 310xt and wasn't impresseded. I popped it out of the quick release twice while adjusting the was on my wrist. I just got the quick release for the 310xt. The strap isn't as comfortable as the original one but the new quick release is solid.

No, I'm going to stay at the olympic distance for a while. I'm not planning to run another marathon any time soon either. I think there is a lot to shorter races to keep me challenged. Heck, I got my butt handed to me in a local 5k last night! I'd like to get under 20mins for a 5k and sub 1:45 for a half mary before I move up in distance. I'll probably set similar goals for an oly but since my first one is in two weeks I have no idea what to expect. What's a "good" time for any oly?

Drew,

Not sure what "good" is, but the winner of the Rev 3 Olympic in Knoxville finished in 1:51:xx last year.

It was good enough for 1st place

Sand, if the watch is waterproof, what's the point of the QR for the 310xt? You don't just wear it and get all the times? I figured I'd do that this weekend at least.

I had heard that the strap on the quick release wasn't the best.  That is why I got this one - it uses the strap that comes with the watch already.  Another option to consider.

I'm kinda over the IM bug.  I'm really wanting to get my OLY times in the 2:0X range and HIM time in the 4:3X, before go back to IM.

If I can run a solid 1:28 or 1:29 at my November Half Mary, I'll race a Mary in February.

I figure I'll probably limp in with a 1:55 or so next month...  (actually I'll be thrilled with a 2:30).  You can figure out what a "good" time is:

1500m swim:  24
25 mile bike:  1:10
10k:  50
Transitions: 3
Total: 2:27

So, honestly I'd say 2:30 is a pretty good time (for me, at least).

The watch is definitely waterproof.  When on the bike for typical rides, though, I like to have it on the bike rather than on my wrist.  In fact, for Mountain Lakes I didn't wear it on the swim - drag, you know. ;-)  I wore the QR strap and had the 310 sitting on the bike ready to go.  Jumped on the bike and started the timer.  When I got into transition I popped it off the bike and onto the wrist.  Took 2 seconds at most.

Funny you should ask.  To finish my bike out I need two things - the aero seatpost and a deep front wheel.  No need for a deep wheel in the back with the PT and cover.  Deep front?  Probably the 88mm clincher from here when they come out.  I'm a cheap bastage.

That's kinda what I was thinking.  I lot of people talk about running a 3:30 or 4:00 marathon or trying to go sub 20 on a 5k but I haven't seen a lot of talk about olympic times.

I'm debating about wearing my 310 for the swim or just start it on my bike.  I forgot to start my watch during my last sprint until after the swim and it was annoying not know what my total time was.  I feel like I was cruising toward the end of the run and could have pushed myself a little more if I knew what my total time was.

I posted this in the Rocketman Oly Thread.  Probably estimated too much time for the transitions.

My best guess is 2:25
swim - :26   1:37/100 y
T1 - :03
bike - 1:08  22.21 mph
T2 - :02
Run - :45   7:15/mi

I'm in the same boat.  I've kinda been scared of the Olympic distance.  That's a long time to be WFO.

Well see about the OLY, but so far my favorite distance is the HIM.

As an aside you'll probably find a 1:45 HM to be a lot more achievable than a sub-20 5k.  I'm nowhere near a 20 minute 5k (21:30 is my best) and I managed a 1:41 HM on 25 miles a week.

Yeah, I know.   If you look at VDOT tables or McMillan Running Calculator they're not really equivalent.  I tried to run a 21 min 5k this week and that didn't go so well.   I'm blaming it on the fact that the course was really effin hilly and I'm not well rested.  I think if I focus on my running a more I can do 1:40-1:45 half or 21 min 5k.  Going sub 20 will definately be tough but right now that challenge is more appealing then going longer.  Imagine being able to run sub 20 off the bike... that was a nice day dream while it lasted!

Don't think I'll ever run anywhere close to a sub 20 5k. My joints hurt like hell when I run hard. Guess I'm getting old.

I ran 13 miles yesterday for my long run. Then this morning did a 32 mile ride with a couple guys. Was supposed to be a nice little recovery spin till they started talking . Hurt like hell but I managed to average 19 mph for the ride. I've never managed to average over 18.5 on this ride before. Unfortuantely, they both still beat me. Cry
