mackjenn - 2011-01-29 3:04 AM Hey Yanti / Lynn,

What units should I use if my healthy challenge is to go from butt ugly to sexiest man alive?

1. I would say U.S. Dollars, but right now one of the strongest Western currencies is the Australian dollar, so I'd go with that. I guarantee a large increase in these would => => => sexiest man alive.

2. Heh. Certain neuro/evol psych studies HAVE actually quantified what's perceived as 'sexiness' but points are scored across a number of categories. There's not just one unit.

3. In the meanwhile, use Frequent Flyer Points. Destination: Bali.

Tucker_lr - 2011-01-28 5:58 PM For the last few weeks I have noticed my legs are low in the water and I feel like they are slowing me down. I warmed up with drill today and noticed that I do not have very good cadence with my kick and slow down or stop on occasion without noticing. Today was my long swim and I focused on making sure I kicked consistently (used my arms less than usual) I ended up completing my long slow swim at my 100m sprint pace barely trying?

I noticed that if I kick consistently my legs don't drop in the water, are there any drill for working on kick speed/etc?

Also I was speaking to a swim coach the other day for an interview and she made a statement about how long course triathletes can focus bilateral breathing every 5th strokes instead of 3rd. Thoughts on that?

Good job on the kick. There's a lot of disagreement about the kicking in triathlon. The TI coaches promote a slower 4 beat kick, I believe and really focus on distance per stroke and body position. I know as far as body position, the leg propulsion will help but pressing your chest down and keeping the head down also helps raise your mid and lower body. I'm not the best swimmer but I do notice  difference when I keep my head down and try to as they say, "look toward your toes."

One of the best kicking drills I"ve heard of is to stay vertical in the water and kick with your legs underneath you. Obviously you have to be in deep enough water to make this work, but I'm starting to encorporate that into my swim drills. When you get really good at that, you can try raising your arms above your head while kicking vertically.

As far as the breathing thing, again disagreement among coaches, but it is recommended you can breath bilaterally so you can spot on either side of you. I know gordo (Gordon Byrne) really likes the every 3rd stroke bilateral. He's said that show you can be relaxed in the water if you can do that comfortably. I can share his exact words once I'm back to my computer. I'm using DH's because we're away for the weekend. (Yes, and I'm on BT).

Let us know how it's going with it all.

Lynn

About the kick, what Lynn said (except the TI coaches are now really pushing the 2-beat kick even over the 4-beat). Do what Lynn said and find a kick/rhythm that works for you.

About the breathing ... long course triathletes CAN focus bilat breathing every 5th instead of 3rd, but not one single one ever does, not in training, not in races. In fact, extremely few even breathe every 3rd stroke.

You will find that the fastest-swimming triathletes, in the world and on this site (and one of them on this site HAS been fastest in the world on the swim leg), as well as the triathletes who also coach swimming, in training and in races ... breathe every 2nd stroke.

We can just breathe equally comfortably on either side, although even for us we do tend to prefer or have one side predominate. The stroke is beautifully balanced no matter what.

OK so part 3 of the NYC snowpocalypse has struck and I am opfficially banning any flakes or talk thereof - snow, corn, dandruff. I am SICK of this stuff. We are running out of places to put it. Its ugly and difficult to drive in. And no sun to speak of.

This week has been way off for me. No swim, barely any running. Can you hear my pout?UghYell I cant stand it. I dont like feeling fat AND out of shape, one is bearable but not both.

I need a plan for weightloss...I have never bene able to "diet" per se, I have always just focused on eating clean)which I do). I need to eat less and more frequently. I know my dangerous times are 1) when I get home from work, 2) right after a really hard workout and 3) late in the evening. I will throw anything in my mouth at those times!

In the "go figure" headlines, apparently I have inspired two women on my job to try a tri. One is purchasing her bike this weekend, I am excited for her! You know misery looooves company!

OK - earlier post asked for pic of the new bike - here it is. I will be moving the cages and bottles to the back of the seat once I get a "wing" for it later this summer.

I'm also in it to help with the units of measure to baseline butt ugly.

For all you people stuck in snow - sorry... this was taken today at 65F in beautiful Colorado. Here is the thing - almost 70 yesterday, 65 today, forecast calls for snow on Monday, and Tuesday HIGH of 5 degrees. Check my banner for full forecast.

You do get all seasons in Colorado - sometimes you get them all in one week.

Nice pic John!!  Yes, I'm envious of the beautiful weather you're having.  Looks like you're taking great advantage of it.

O.k, it's official.  I took the plunge and signed up for Racine 70.3!!!  Yikes, I'm so exited but very nervous.  The price tag alone says no going back. Tongue out

Outfit was a steal at the velo swap last summer.  Got 2 pair of shorts, tri top, road top, and sleeveless vest for less than $75.  Think it is the only thing I have that matches.

This MAD MANATEE participated at an indoor tri event this morning.  It is a series of three events, so one down two to go.  Returning to my beginning because four years ago this is the first event where I was a participant.  Nice to know nothing has changed; fop swimming, mop bike and bop running.  Consistency is everything!  Now I get a recovery week and will be registering for a marathon in next couple of weeks.  Everyone have good week training.

Thanks guys.  It certainly makes it real when you officially sign up for something.  The kids are exited for the road trip.

Now....who is bracing themselves for this atrocious storm coming?  I live in Indiana and the reports are a tremendous amount of snow and ice!!!  I'm more worried about the ice knocking down the power.  Yikes.

Stay safe everyone!!!

INAUGURAL MAD MANATEE HEALTH PICKLE CHALLENGE

Gotten yourself into a health pickle? Want to eat more pickles? Just in it for fun?

- Challenge runs from NOW (or if you want to backdate a few days or to your last significant value, fine) until MARCH 31
- Pick a goal type that has a quantifiable STARTING VALUE (you can set it to zero if you don't want to reveal the number). Possibilities/examples include weight, measurements (ex: mine is hip+waist circumference starting at 150cm), time/100yd swim, OR let's say a number that you want to increase--say your longest run now is 5 miles and you want to get to 10 miles by then.
- Identify your END VALUE (ex: mine is get hip+waist circ. to 136cm)
- Check in every week with your new numbers or change in numbers

I have, of course, set up a spreadsheet for this and it happens to be Sheet 2 of our existing Goals Spreadsheet:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0An7ZkKfHG1L1dHphaHc0aFczX0FkOEdhaERqWG0wa1E&hl=en&authkey=CJGo6JsM#gid=1

Thought I start off this Monday with some Healthy Pickle check-in:

Goals:
-drop 6.3 pounds
-swim 100, 10 seconds faster - base 2:30
-ride 2 hours outside with both feet clipped in - base 97 minutes, one foot clipped!
-do at least one plank per day

I'm starting with this as my base week, so hopefully next Monday I'll have something more fun to report.  How's everyone else doing?

Happy Monday Mad Manatees!

I am exhausted today. Mondays have that effect on me. Nothing more to add, just wanted to get our butts off of the second page.

AND oh yes we are getting part of the storm tomorrow. Sick of snow. All flakes remain banned in my house - corn flakes, snow flakes, frosted flakes, dandruff, you name it.

I am starting the Healthy Pickle challenge on 2/1/11 (I like beginning of the months)

Goals:
-Run at least 15 mpw (starting average is 6mpw)

-continue yoga 2x/week (average now is 2x/week since 1/14, just want to continue)

-No microwaved foods (an experiment I am trying to see if I feel healthier eating conventionally heated foods.  I was reading about how microwaves take away the healthy enzymes and vitamins.) Right now I average 2-3 microwaved foods/day.

I probably got my last run workout in outside for a week if we get as much snow as they say.  We are expecting almost 2 Feet of snow in Chicago and 30mph+ wind so snow drifts that can be 5 Feet deep.

23 minutes, 5 seconds!!!

Met my run goal by running 3 miles in less than 24 minutes - not super fast, but 13 minutes off of my 5k time last June.  Plus - my Triathlon 10k last summer was 1hr, 10 minutes.  Based on this, looks like I need to set a new goal around 22'30".  Not sure I'll ever actaully run a race at this pace, but it is fun none the less.

Just as bad as I feel when I miss a goal, meeting one feels great.

Bike goal justified  Cool
